Off-Topic OT: FSU Active Shooter

FWIW, I live in Tally and work for an auxiliary of FSU so I started receiving emergency texts at 12:02. They're not sharing real information on the texts but the news here reported 6 people shot and being treated at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. One was in critical condition and the other 5 in serious condition. Campus is still on lockdown but threat has been neutralized. I believe the shooter was apprehended around 1:30-2p but law enforcement spent hours clearing buildings.

Appears to have been one shooter and that's what I've heard for a couple of hours. Not sure where the reports of fatalities and multiple shooters originated.

Unbelievable. The things that have to go wrong in a persons life to actively decide that you want to take someone else's...

These innocent people had futures. All taken away. Who gives a **** if they're our rivals? That **** doesn't matter right now.

I was being sarcastic. Dudes like that have definitely been doing horrific things for a long time.

Not on this scale though, and this is not to excuse people.
Like I said, during my youth I knew quite a few people with guns and I trusted them,
even when they got into fights as happens with young men, that they wouldn't use them.
These days, not so sure.
And it's not just guns, I see videos of young folks, male and female, kicking folks when they
are down in ground, already knocked out, kicking them in the head apparently trying to kill them.
What happened to someone stopping a fight where one of the fighters is down and defeated?

Dang! Never would have guessed Hialeah!! I grew up in Rural Ohio.

As recent as late 1960s, Hialeah was not much different than most small-town America.
You had lots of cow pastures, little-league and high-school football was king, and on Friday and
Saturdays you had local stock-car races (where the Allisons cut their teeth) and, of course, you had the famous Hialeah Race Track for folks into horse-racing. It was different and by the late 1970s you
still remnants of that past who still did the "small-town" stuff.

South Florida Fairgrounds in WPB used to have a track where the Allisons raced too. It closed in the late 70's.

Don’t forget about Follies International by Hialeah Speedway…

Apparently they haven’t released a lot of the students yet.

I have a cousin that was in the Bellamy building when the shooting went down, now they’ve corralled them all into the Civic Center last I heard. I was just happy that I got a text saying he was OK.

But I was told pretty much it’s over and has been for a while. Now they just have do the investigations and law-enforcement has to clear all the buildings

Its because everyone wants to get the news out first on Twitter so they post the first thing they hear. Then the conspiracy people follow claiming a false flag operation because the information changed.

Per FSU PD:

Two dead, five hospitalized (not including shooter).

The deceased are not students. Shooter believed to be an FSU student.

There is no one answer.
Societal breakdown.
Unchecked gang activity.
Mental health issues.
Desensitivity from movies, social media and highly realistic video games.
Fatherless households.
Socio-economic reasons.
Etc., Etc.
We cant even stop Fentanyl from crossing the border which caused more deaths than guns in recent years. So how do we stop illegal gun access?

Gun racks went away when the Florida concealed carry Act was passed. 2.5 million CCW permits have been issued in Florida, but they aren’t the people committing the gun violence.

Exactly but no one addresses it at all

One side says Thoughts & Prayers

The other blames the guns
I agree with you conceptually and understand what you're saying. I do wonder though, what are "they" supposed to do to address it/fix it? I mean this question respectfully and I'm not trying to stir anything at all. I also don't expect you to have an answer. "Gun control" sounds great until you unpack it and realize that there are more guns in this country than people and that many guns are illegally obtained. I'm sure there are some restrictions we could adopt, but I'm not real sure they would be effective. "Thoughts and Prayers" is about as hollow as it gets nowadays and even if it had more meaning, it doesn't address or fix the issue. Personally I would like to see these mass shooters somehow kept alive and tortured, but we have constitutional laws that disallow forms of punishment like that.

Nothing I wrote was directed at you; please don't take it that way. I probably just needed to get that noise out of my head. I have a nephew that goes to FSU - he's ok. It's just rattling to hear this stuff....again.

Glad your cousin is safe.

I think in many cases where minors are involved, parents need to be made responsible especially if their kid used one of their guns., although this is probably not relevant to what happened today.
