Actually, everything Original Cane said was dead on. Most Confederate memorials were erected long after the Civil War, usually during times in which southern whites felt that people like me were getting too "Uppity",by demanding our constitutionally guaranteed rights. It was always a problem for people of color that schools like UNC had memorials to slave owning scumbags and bigots to boot. It's just that now, minorities can force change, when in previous generations, no one would have listened.

The Silent Sam statue was unveiled in 1913 to honor the 1,000 plus students and faculty that fought in the civil war. That’s decades before the civil rights movement and before anybody got “uppity.” It’s one of many “silent” statues, meaning there was no ammo cartridge on his belt so he can’t fire the gun. It’s simply a memorial. It’s manufactured rage.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
 
I have to ask this if a name/word is racist why is that name/word used by anybody.why can some people say it the right is on but when others say it it's laughed and joked about by others.and why is that name/word used in rap songs comedy acts ECT and is laughed at.if it's such a bad name/word nobody should be using it.isn't it hypocritical to laugh over here when it's used but starts a riot if its used over there.

So it's "leftist" to not want to be reminded on a daily basis that the school you attend celebrates people who owned your ancestors? That's a liberal thing is it?

I'm not trying to call you a racist for asking the question, it just baffles me when people get upset that they aren't allowed to use a term but others are. Like why do you care? Was saying n!@@er such a big part of your life that it's hard to quit? I really don't think it was, so think about how silly it is to be bothered by this.

And to answer the question, probably nobody should be saying it. But can you really not see the difference between black people trying to own a hurtful term and people of the race that used to enslave them using it?

But I love arguments claiming conservatives want the government out of individuals lives. Not true if you’re pro-choice, believe in decriminalizing recreational use of drugs, or believe two individuals of the same *** should enjoy the same legal benefits and rights of marriage as opposite-*** couples. In these cases the government should of course step in and enforce the ideology of others.

Most of the Confederate monuments concerned were built in periods of racial conflict, such as when Jim Crow laws were being introduced in the late 19th century and at the start of the 20th century or during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The biggest spike was between 1900 and the 1920s.

And I do not believe they should be removed, by the way.

The individuals should be remembered for who they were and what they believed in.

You clearly don’t know half of what went on here. It’s all a power play. They want a seat on the board, they want free tuition, the wanted standardized test scores out of the admission process, and they wanted Spellings fired along with other stuff. They got none of it so they took down the statue

My point was, it’s been up for over 100 years and it didn’t become unbearable to these kids until now? This has more to do with not getting over 2016 than anything

Nobody would have listened before now. And what about it? Couldn't you have said 3 days after that statue went up "why didn't you complain the first day"? You don't get to negate an argument by saying it was made on the wrong day.

There has been controversy over these monuments for decades. Only in the era of 24 hours news cycles and social media has the issue come to near the front of the line.

Do you think ex-slaves and their descendants weren’t offended and outraged by these memorials? They were, but more interested protecting their constitutional rights rather than worrying about blocks of stone.

It doesn't matter who wanted what. Statues of dudes who owned slaves or fought to keep the right to own slaves are fcking offensive. I'm very, very rarely offended, but that does it. And this isn't forgetting history, it's stopping the celebration of a part of it.
