OT: Dolphins 2nd/3rd Round Draft Picks

The PSU TE has jump, 50/50, and fade catch skills ALMOST equal to Tate and Lazard in this draft. Extreme body control. The U hasn't had anyone close to this in years until Mr. Hightower.

Gesicki would have been our third TE in 2016.

He can’t block like Herndon, can’t move like Njoku and he is useless once the ball is in his hands.

He is a one-trick pony. Everything is vertical and jump balls. He will not get open in the NFL.

Keep this guy. Give me Herndon. He goes off the board in the 4th and has a better career.

I didn’t like the pick when there was a better TE available in Goedert. Just as good catching the ball and a better all around TE. Eagles playing chess dolphins playing baby checkers. Although I did love Fitz in 1st round.

I would have taken Goedert over Gesicki. Only Goedert in this class has a chance to be a special tight end, IMO. Gesicki tests very well but he doesn't play as athletic as he tests, partially because he's so soft and one dimensional out there.

I really like Minkah Fitzpatrick. He reminds me of Tim Foley from the Dolphins heyday in the early '70s. I posted that comparison somewhere several months ago, but I'm not sure if it was here or Finheaven or wherever. It looked obvious on Thursday it would be a choice between Fitzpatrick, Tremaine Edmunds or Derwin James. I think Miami chose best with Minkah.

Those early '70s teams were incredibly smart. That's what they were known for. You never worried about the defensive backs looking at each other in disbelief after a busted coverage. There was no such thing as a busted coverage with **** Anderson, Jake Scott, Curtis Johnson and Tim Foley back there.

Fitzpatrick is extremely versatile, like Foley, and also can block kicks, like Foley. The Dolphins desperately need an injection of smarts, like an extra coach on the field. Fitzpatrick is a superior athlete than Foley was but more than anything the Dolphins need sharp dependable building block players. It was a good first step.

I wasn't paying attention in the third round but now that I see Maurice Hurst has not been drafted I would have had to take him over the Ohio State linebacker. The other two defensive tackles who went later in the third round were good value also -- Justin Jones and Harrison Phillips.

Actually, now that I'm looking at the third round and how it played out I would have taken Mason Rudolph. I thought he was underrated and a legitimate candidate to become a good NFL starter. The Dolphins keep wanting to pretend Tannehill will steadily move up the ladder, through improvement and attrition elsewhere. Nice plan. Meanwhile, 5 of the 6 quarterbacks who have been drafted so far went to the AFC, and two of them to the AFC East. Other franchises are making aggressive moves while the Dolphins rely on adjustment and false hope.

***

BTW, I'm beginning to understand why the Canes are not competing for national championships, given our one third round pick compared to multiple first rounders every year for programs like Alabama. Of course, we can always rely on Happy Adjustment and pretend it's not representative.

We are going out of our way to trade physical players and acquire soft players.

While I typically agree and appreciate your posts, this is ludicrous.

I’d love to know what you base your definition of “soft players” (that implies multiple additions) on and who you refer to other than your clear distaste for Gesicki.. who happens to be a **** of an athlete.

Funnier is, in a later post one of your statements is “he will never get open in the Nfl.” To which I’ll counter with....good thing he was the best in college football at coming down with contested passes.

But back to your original point of replacing with soft players (plural). Enlighten me.

TJ McDonald isn’t soft. Reshad isn’t soft. Minkah isn’t soft and is smarter than anyone on our team this (or last) year. The two Ohio St lb additions (don’t forget McMillan) can thump. One adds needed speed. Amendola....he soft too? What about Gore?

Let me guess....you’re upset Landry and his 15 yard penalties or shake and bake instead of plowing forward after a 5 yard pass in which we need 6 is gone? Or Ajayi who Gase left home because he was, wait for it, mentally soft? Or banged up has beens like a Timmons or Kiko?

This team is in desperate need of culture change and speed. So far... I’d say this off season has been a step in the right direction for once. Gore/Amendola can help with the culture shift and guidance to our youth movement. And speed has been infused **** near all over.

So, with that, would love to hear your “soft” stance...and the multiple additions you see as such...

Dude...places like Fort Hays State and UTSA got kids drafted higher than us. That said, we still put guys into the league regularly who outperform their draft positions. Herndon will do that and if Berrios goes to a coach who knows how to use him, like Belichik, he'll be a clutch role player.

Also, Louisville and Virginia Techbeach had 2 1st rounders tgis year but they didn't dominate their divisions. There's been a lot with our coaching that's been part of the problem. When you put the players out there who we are now getting and coach them up, I'm sure we'll see a big difference.

Dolphins just drafted the white Njoku and people crying because he doesn't block. FOH. Who does Gronk block? Who did Njoku ever block? If they want to draft a blocking tight end, there will be 500 of them still available in the 6th round.

Njoku was a much better blocker than gesicki

The culture change we need is at the top. Tannenbaum has been here since 2015 and our roster is littered with holes. We have no identity. We reach for need every year, and then create new needs with bad picks.

Suh was physical and feared. We replaced him with Jordan Phillips, a soft loafer. Landry was a dog who set the tone for the offense. We replaced him with DeVante Phillips, who is weak, and Stills, who is a deep ball specialist. Ajayi was a Pro Bowl power runner. We replaced him with Kenyan Drake, who is athletic but brittle. Ajayi won a Super Bowl.

We had one of the worst run-blocking lines in the league. Gesicki is one of the softest TEs in recent history. We drafted a LB whose weakness is “toughness.” Alonso doesn’t thump.

We are a finesse team with no playmakers. Our coach is an insecure loser who can’t deal with Alpha players and needs yes men. We will miss the playoffs again, and I only hope Ross finally wakes up.

What are we basing this on?
Secondly, when the Dolphins picked Egnew nobody heard of him. Gesicki was killing it at PSU (more than double the touchdowns of Herndon) and put up killer numbers at the combine. Dolphins already have a blocking TE in Gray. This gives them a redzone threat and a third down replacement for Jarvis Landry.

Love the canes but this board is a bunch of homers. Probably would have freaked out if we took Guice and would have said we should have taken Mark Walton.

Gesiki fits Adams gase system to a T. Have you noticed since gase has become the coach we usually have a good blocking tight(fasano) end then we want a seam threat who is athletic enough to make plays in the red zone(Julius Thomas was too old and couldn’t block here or in Denver, Jordan Cameron isn’t far off from the same). We took an athletic freak that fits our system perfect and is way more healthy and an all around better pass catcher then Herndon. If you don’t like this pick your probably a homer or blind as a bat.

You have been hanging out with peter the agent too much(peter had an influence on RJ Macintosh and Kendrick Norton leaving IMO, not sure how Erick is a back stabber and peter isn’t but that is another story) Dolphins got rid of guys who played football to make money and didn’t love the game. You don’t pay a DT $25 million a year, you don’t pay a slot WR $16 million a year and expect to have a winning franchise. Dolphins made a culture change and got rid of the guys who don’t show up every week or who wouldn’t take a 2 million dollar pay cut to stay in miami(Jarvis Landry passed on staying in Miami and went to Cleveland over 2 million dollars. State income tax will come close to taking care of tbat.

But the fact is that a lot of Richts former players were picked very high during the draft the last couple days. The guys going pro are golden recruits and the reason chad fell was teams didn’t trust his love for football over music.

Richts guys go early because he prepares them for the nfl game(just like Saban, smart, Dabo, etc). They are not 3 year projects(like Norton and Mac and berrios) will probably be. Walton and Herndon are coming off injury. Gotta look at facts when making these decisions. When playing for a basic system players don’t even learn how to read the field or coverages(they have cards or coaches make the calls from the sideline) when you play for a big time coach/program they run prostyle to get you ready for the PROS where you are reading the other team. It is a huge difference between being nfl ready and not being ready. Golden didn’t prepare our guys, some guys got hurt, and one had two loves in football and music. Take a step back our guys will be going early as soon as next year.

On a side note have to love Miami taking players from big programs over the last year. They are trying to get nfl ready talent because our roster has lacked young guys ready to play the game for so long.

Sounds like you and Joel Klatt agree:

“Red zone is where I thought he was so problemsome for defenses. This is a guy that not only can jump out of the gym but has power at the top of that vertical. Volleyball is a sport that you develop the power when your feet are off the ground. That’s why he’s so good in that situation in 50/50 balls. When he goes up in the end zone, he almost always comes down with that football. His ability to understand the nuance of route running is what allows him to create space and get wins in the secondary.”

Klatt's excuse for being wrong is Jon Beason, what's yours?

Always respect your opinion on the hurricanes but your wrong on this. The Dolphins lost only one player this year that wasn’t replaced with a better player and that was SUH. Suh cost $25 million a year and it is smarter to distribute that money to more areas of need.

For years the dolphins were known as the team to flush money down the toilet to sign big time players with even bigger egos. That finally changed this year. I don’t really like tannenbaum either but it seem this is now Chris Grier and Adam gase team to run. Tannenbaum is there for relationships bc tannenbaum would have mortgaged our future to take a qb in the first round. We haven’t even made one trade tannenbaum usually makes multiple in a draft.

It seems to be a two year project to change the culture and get more play makers. Dolphins will have a good amount of money to spend next year to fill some of the holes too.

I have to ask how you can hate on Adam gase when he is the best coach we have had since jimmy Johnson. He is young has the drive charisma and players want to play for him. Sean mcvay(rams head coach) and Adam gase are like the same person. Mcvay just had a better roster handed to him(don’t forget gase has lost his starting QB for two years in a row. Injuries happen but seems to happen to this team way too often

Not really sure where your going with this other then that wasn’t a penalty on beason. Game has changed so much in 15 years love herdon would have been happy with him but this is not Michael egnew. I know he has us dolphins fans shell shocked but think more young Julius Thomas or even jimmy graham.

Side note if your trying to contradict what I think of Gesiki might be a better idea to post a negative blurb about him not a positive one then post a video of beason getting a bull**** penalty called against the writer of the blurb. Not many people will catch on to that. I know your trying to think outside the box but came off as a positive post for Gesiki.

Jarvis Landry doesn’t love the game? Jay Ajayi just won a Super Bowl. How did he fit into that culture?

Meanwhile, we just drafted two dudes who don’t even like to hit. Is that the culture we want?

We are irrelevant and will remain so until Tannenbaum is gone.

Baker led his team in tackles. Futz won all kinds of defensive awards. And while Gesicki isn’t a great blocker and even says he wants to get better, this doesn’t look like a guy who avoids contact.

The eagles were going to win the super bowl with or without jay ajayi. He cried about playing time and demanded snaps when he was getting outperformed in practice by Kenyan Drake and Damien william(he can’t cstch nearly as good as those two which played a part). He molded into the Eagles culture and didn’t make demands because he was new. Dolphins had a terrible culture when he got here with nothing but young guys to influence him. He could get away with away with some things in the dolphins locker room that he could not in the Eagles hence the culture change in Miami. He is not a team player never has been and him happenening to be on the roster as the third runningback on a super bowl team does not change any of that. Frank gore is 10 times the runningback and leader that jay ajayi is.

Loved Jarvis as a player he wanted too much money. Not saying he didn’t love the game so much but no slot reciever is worth 16 million a year. He could have taken 14 million a year which is what the dolphins offered. To go play for Cleveland over 2 million per year. Danny amendola and Albert Wilson easily make up for his production and bring other skill sets to the table.
