Oregon to be knocked out of playoff contention this week?

Utah is good, and Rising > Brown. They'll at least split with Oregon between this game and potential Pac-12 Championship meeting, hence Oregon isn't making the playoffs. But, if Mario goes into Salt Lake City and comes out with a win, that's **** impressive.
correct Oregon is a 3 point dog as of today

Right? As if MC missing out on the playoffs is going to have any impact on whether or not he's the HC at UM next year....
Maybe only financially it would. If they win and make the playoffs, I would assume they would throw some serious cash at him. Conversely, if they lose, maybe they wouldn't put the effort in to retain him. Will take a massive amount of cash either way,

Seriously. Yay! We hired the guy that can't beat Utah! That just doesn't sit well with me, at all. It's one thing to hire say Jimmy Johnson when he couldn't beat Oklahoma and Nebraska while at Oklahoma State. It's another to want a coach that loses to Utah while at Oregon.

This ties in well with my post about not hiring the #1 guy on your list just because he's #1 on your list. If your #1 is losing to Utah, maybe, just maybe, you need to interview other people to make sure he deserves that #1 spot.
We aren’t going to land nick saban. We can’t guarantee there won’t some game day failures with Mario, but we can guarantee top 10 recruiting classes year in an year out with him. If we have 3 or 4 top 10 classes in a row, we will be in CFP talk every year. I would take that any day over the last 15 years

So the U has to help the U. We have to hope the almighty coach we want to lose so we can say he is a choker when coaching another team but the greatest coach if coaching us.

Stacking talent and getting the most out of it are two different things. I'm not convinced he is the best coach we can get because of this. I hate seeing our more talented team lose week after week. Look at the games we lost the last several years. We were more talented than 90% of them. We need a coach that can get the most out of the talent, not just get it in.

Don't get me wrong, he'd be a big upgrade over Manny, I am just not convinced he's the best coach for us.

Potentially. However, even if Mario wins out, its hard to imagine Ohio State winning out against both Michigan teams and not getting in.

Whether Cinci gets left out is a different discussion.
This would be the greatest case for Miami. Proof that even if Mario does well at Oregon, he is more likely to be shut out than while at Miami.

A top 4 team is an underdog to a barely top 25 team
Take your caneshades off
When you see something like this it usually means one of the teams has a corch

Porsters, I am not overly invested in Mario or any other coach. The reality is though, that outside of Nick Saban, every potential head coach has negatives. Lane and Freeze for example, have a ton of baggage. Napier and Chadwell have no P5 experience, Aranda has only been a P5 head coach for two seasons, etc. etc.

I am not strongly for or against Mario, but for a Miami Athletic Director, he would be a safe choice.

Is "baggage" really a negative? Serious question.

To me, the whole thing about baggage is that our university and athletic department were too politically correct to hire someone with baggage. More often it appears that the coaches with baggage are the best ones. Which makes sense, if they werent good at their job no entity would risk the PR hit in exchange for hiring them.

Just a thought.

Why would Oregon being a playoff team keep Cristobal in Oregon? I haven't understood that line of thinking and it gets repeated here nonstop. Almost all coaches who make moves to other places do so AFTER they've achieved success.
Basically this.

If Cristobal decides to come to Miami it's irrelevant whether Oregon are in the Playoffs or not. It would be an emotional decision to coach at the U. Right now he's in a much better situation in Eugene.

I get your point, and perhaps baggage is not the right word for every candidate, maybe "concern" is better, as the last few coaches I named.
