Opt Outs in the ACC

There is no big game bowls anymore bro unless it’s the CFP. That’s college football now, unlike the old days with conference aligned bowls and voting for the national champion which brought in conference pride even if you weren’t playing for the national championship. I know we all used to bltch about not having a playoff back then but I actually kind of miss those days. Back Then bowls meant more and the way CFB declared a national champion made it unique in all of sports.
I agree. But I would hope if we had made it to the Orange bowl that Phillips and Roche would have played because of the significance to the program. With our luck it probably wouldn’t have mattered though.

Said this yesterday, the bowl format is outdated and needs to die. There is literally no benefit for a kid who's going to enter the draft unless they're projected as a late-round pick at best and think showing out in the Depends Bowl will improve their draft stock. Otherwise the risk of getting injured in a meaningless bowl far outweighs any potential benefit.

16 is the magic number IMO. P5 conference champs and G5 conference champs get automatic bids so long as they meet some predetermined ranking criteria, just to prevent a 7-win Sun Belt champ from getting in over a 10-win P5 team who didn't win their conference.

15 games and each of them is an elimination game. They would mean something, people would watch and it would be a freakin cash-cow. You may still have some opt-outs, but when a chance to win a natty is on the line I think most kids play.

Agreed. You could probably never go past 16, just on the time factor alone. With 4 rounds, you need 4 weekends, which is not a much different time frame than what we have now.

All the other (former) justifications for bowl games are just going down the tubes.

Chamber-of-Commerce tool to spur tourism? Yeah, that's a joke. Nobody is going to Boise because of what they saw during a bowl game. And as for the thousands of fans of each school who have a gun put to their heads, check the actual ticket sales, when schools try to return massive portions of their "allotments" of tickets. ****, with AirBnB these days, you might not even see any impact to hotel bookings.

Named sponsor? Heck, most of these bowls change title sponsors every year or two.

"Reward for the kids"? The upperclassmen don't want to risk their draft prospects, the underclassmen don't want to risk Covid. And for what, a trip to a boring city and some craptastic gift bag? After NIL kicks in, these kids are going to be able to build their own futures, not rely on some crappy bowl game for a holiday trip and a bag full of re-gifting items.

And don't come yammering about how "that's why I love college football, because every game counts". Yeah, that's a load of crap. A 2-loss team almost made it and was ranked ahead of an undefeated team.

Every other pro and college sports postseason is predicated upon seeding. You play harder (and better) to try to make your playoff run easier and more successful. That works out nicely. The days of "college football teams needing to be undefeated to have a shot to win the championship" are over.

Plus (eventually) we'll get back to playing more quality P5 OOC games. As it currently stands, most teams are too scared (along with many Miami fans) to schedule more than one good P5 OOC game per year.

Dump the "FBS" designation for Division I, get rid of the bowl games, and go to a Sweet 16. I guaran-*******-tee you, the regular season of college football will still be competitive as **** and a lot of fun to watch.

And the post-season will be infinitely better.

****. Dudes opting out of big name bowls too I see. Sheesh
Not new. This has been going on a few years. It sucks. And I actually expect the Bowl people to start pushing the NCAA to do something and it. Not that they can.

the playoff led to it. the bowls are basically worthless out of the final 4.

nah, we didn’t see this many opt outs the last few years. Covid did it. Let’s face it - to these kids and coaches, going to a big bowl is just not worth the effort this year.

Many of these bowls will not reflect the same team that played the season. If you're betting, pay attention. The UNC team will be totally different already.

Bowl system isn't working. I hate to see College Football lose it, but fear that's what's coming unless they fix it with an inclusive playoff. I say go to eight, 10 team league that make geographic sense. No need for WVU to be traveling to Lubbock for example. Once we get the 80 teams in 8 leagues, only the conf champ goes to an 8 game playoff. That's 14 post season games. Money would be huge.

Let the G5 form their own league.

I resisted for a long time but it has to happen. Urban said on Saturday that expansion of the playoff would not only make NFL prospects play in playoff games and will help redistribute the elite players because they know they’ll have a shot.

Anyone thinking about the kids? Should they be playing almost an NFL number of games.
We used to hear this concern about teenage bodies... Not anymore.

Business decisions. We had a dude opt out of the whole **** season. **** is laughable.
I just wonder how disciplined college kids are that opt out. Are they working out at the same rate as the team? They obviously are not getting any game time action.

Someone put out the stat a few days ago that showed 45 out of the top 100 HS recruits just signed with one of FIVE college football programs.

Yes, we need a great equalizer (actual competition and actually playing elimination games), because we **** sure know the NCAA will not enforce the rule on those FIVE college football programs, or even limit what those FIVE college football programs will spend.

What? College football is the only sport that doesn't have a real playoff. FCS does it at 16. Cut out the non conference games and there wouldn't be "extra" games. ****, once you get your *** kicked in round one maybe you are playing less games.

Urban may be onto something...With the same schools (to their credit) competing in the top 4 year in and year out maybe they do get the recruiting advantage.

Expanding the playoffs to 8 teams should have been done a long time ago so let's just go to 16 now like the FCS. You can name each round for one of the bowls.

I'm not sure if you are concerned, or you are mocking those who are concerned, but let's not pretend that Division I-A football is any different.

The Florida high school teams that made it to the 8A finals played 12 games. During Covid. That's double what F$U played.

Division III has a playoff. Division II has a playoff. Division I-AA has a playoff.

Lots of HS and college football players can handle extra playoff games. But NOT the very best players? Doesn't make a lot of sense.

They could opt out, nobody's holding a gun to these poor kids heads making them play D-I college football. Conversely, they could choose to play, kind of like how Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields were leading the charge wanting to play this year, instead of potentially having the decision made for them by someone else.

If you don't like something you don't have to participate, but it takes a special person to think they should make the decision for anyone else.

I've said this for a long time.

Need to go to an 8-game playoff. Then, maybe someday, a Sweet 16. Bowl games will die soon enough.

Why, just to get kids to play? There’s 2 national title worthy teams. Clemson and Bama. The other 2 teams are just there to get beat down.
