Said this yesterday, the bowl format is outdated and needs to die. There is literally no benefit for a kid who's going to enter the draft unless they're projected as a late-round pick at best and think showing out in the Depends Bowl will improve their draft stock. Otherwise the risk of getting injured in a meaningless bowl far outweighs any potential benefit.
16 is the magic number IMO. P5 conference champs and G5 conference champs get automatic bids so long as they meet some predetermined ranking criteria, just to prevent a 7-win Sun Belt champ from getting in over a 10-win P5 team who didn't win their conference.
15 games and each of them is an elimination game. They would mean something, people would watch and it would be a freakin cash-cow. You may still have some opt-outs, but when a chance to win a natty is on the line I think most kids play.
Agreed. You could probably never go past 16, just on the time factor alone. With 4 rounds, you need 4 weekends, which is not a much different time frame than what we have now.
All the other (former) justifications for bowl games are just going down the tubes.
Chamber-of-Commerce tool to spur tourism? Yeah, that's a joke. Nobody is going to Boise because of what they saw during a bowl game. And as for the thousands of fans of each school who have a gun put to their heads, check the actual ticket sales, when schools try to return massive portions of their "allotments" of tickets. ****, with AirBnB these days, you might not even see any impact to hotel bookings.
Named sponsor? Heck, most of these bowls change title sponsors every year or two.
"Reward for the kids"? The upperclassmen don't want to risk their draft prospects, the underclassmen don't want to risk Covid. And for what, a trip to a boring city and some craptastic gift bag? After NIL kicks in, these kids are going to be able to build their own futures, not rely on some crappy bowl game for a holiday trip and a bag full of re-gifting items.
And don't come yammering about how "that's why I love college football, because every game counts". Yeah, that's a load of crap. A 2-loss team almost made it and was ranked ahead of an undefeated team.
Every other pro and college sports postseason is predicated upon seeding. You play harder (and better) to try to make your playoff run easier and more successful. That works out nicely. The days of "college football teams needing to be undefeated to have a shot to win the championship" are over.
Plus (eventually) we'll get back to playing more quality P5 OOC games. As it currently stands, most teams are too scared (along with many Miami fans) to schedule more than one good P5 OOC game per year.
Dump the "FBS" designation for Division I, get rid of the bowl games, and go to a Sweet 16. I guaran-*******-tee you, the regular season of college football will still be competitive as **** and a lot of fun to watch.
And the post-season will be infinitely better.
