On Zaquan Patterson...

He stunk out loud last year, but so did everyone else and it doesn’t mean he has to suck forever. If the off the field stuff is rectified and he wants back in of course you take him.

I just expect zero because holy **** was he bad when he played.
Agreed.

My uncertainty has more to do with adding a player that actually played well last year. If we take Zaquan back, does that foreclose the possibility of adding a potential #2/#3 safety to the room.

I saw nothing from ZP last year that leads me to believe he can be that guy this season.

I don't disagree, but making mistakes is part of development. Seems to me if we want to get out of the cycle of relying on the portal for starter positions, we need to create space for young guys to get reps, make mistakes, and develop. The challenge is finding spots for reps where the mistakes don't cost you a game, which is particularly hard at the safety position.

That whole defensive unit was so checked out last season, so I’m not going to completely **** on him for making mistakes last year. Even if he isn’t the 5 start talent we all hoped he would be, I’d be shocked if he couldn’t improve with this staff and make an impact.

The off the field stuff is a completely story. Hopefully this portal window knocked some sense into him

He seems like one of those super-athletic/highly rated kids that would hang around the roster and we'd be "waiting for the light to come on" for him every year.

True, but with the revamp of the DB room it might be worth a flyer to take back a kid who has issues, but also some talent, and is probably reasonably priced.

Depends on what the issues were/are. I trust the coaches have thoroughly vetted the kid and his desire to play at this school for these coaches.

No overall the issue with Patterson is kinda his speed and athleticism in space

He is more of a head hunter who also has a nose for he ball and can make plays on it.

Good athlete. Not super athlete, size speed measurables type

Actually similar to jakobe thomas but hopefully a cleaner tackler as that is an issue with Thomas. Both capable of kill shots

Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying - the move makes even more sense now
