Older guys - 35+

Not complicated. From 1984 to late 2008 I was in Las Vegas wagering on sports so following the teams is what we did. There was never a lack of information pre-internet. My dad would tape games on VCR and send them to me. But I was taping them myself in Las Vegas, where virtually every Canes game was televised in the sportsbooks anyway.

I had family and friends in Miami so they would tell me tidbits or local rumors I might have missed. Almost every year I would be in Miami during summer, sometimes long enough to see an early season game. Then at the holidays I would return, including attending bowl games like 1987 and 1991 national title wins against Oklahoma and Nebraska.

I might still be there if the corporate mergers hadn't dropped the number of independent lines from roughly 40 to roughly 15, severely cutting back on opportunities for middles and scalps. Many friends of mine left town for the same reason. I feel sorry for anybody starting fresh there these days. The candy is gone.

Miami Herald, local tv sports segments, Coach Schnelly on tv with I believe, Tony Segreto.

Was in Houston or overseas during the’80s Can recall one Saturday I was flipping thru some radio stations and came upon a Canes v Oklahoma game. We were destroying them. Jerome Brown had broken Troy Aikman’s leg and they couldn’t do a thing against us. From then on, I would see if I could get our games on radio if they weren’t on TV. Good times and great teams. Something I don’t think I’ll ever see again.

The Herald, although there used to be an off-season too. There doesn’t seem to be much of that these days.

How did you follow the canes year round before the internet?

When I was a kid in the 50s it was the Herald and the Daily News. Later it was the library’s old issue newspapers from around the country.
Canesport used to have a magazine broke down previous game previewed upcoming game gave recruiting news etc

We talked with people.
You mean...face to face? How is that possible? I thought it was impossible to communicate before texting.

I literally cannot get my son on the phone. The only way to communicate with him is by text, or occasionally in person. BTW, he's 52.

I can remember when the Miami Herald would show a play using multiples photographs. There was a dotted line showing the path of a pass with a circle around the football.
Remember that, also games were on Friday nights, and Burger King used to pass out coupons/tickets to get in for free

Sunshine Network use to have a recruiting show in the early 90's that use to give you all the recruits that signed etc.

Miami Herald/Sun Sentinel. Didn’t follow recruiting until 1999/2000.

But I loved reading the Saturday/Sunday paper in the 90s. Love seeing updates stats on the players and the standings.

It’s funny and amazing how you appreciate the little things when you don’t have all information at your disposal 24/7.

Great memories!

Man I used to love reading the Sunday sports page in the Herald after a Miami game in the 80s, miss those days. Recruiting obviously wasn't the industry that it has become today, so had no real clue about that until I started getting the Canesport newspaper, I guess that was probably in the mid-late 90s.
