OL Recruiting

Iowa has continually recruited low-star athletic bodies and bulked them up to be NFL OL and DL players. Not all of them for sure, but every year one or more. For example this year they have the top 2 tight ends in the draft...

Bulking players up is an issue at Miami. We produce weaklings.

Im not hyped about Gaynor either. Dude has some of the heaviest feet I have ever seen. There is a reason why he was just a 2* no matter how many kids he put on their back in HS.
If you're going to grab low end 3* types (like Gaynor, for example), you need to have strong development and a good coach.

We've had neither and the new guy is just as much of a question mark as anyone on the staff.

I'm just willing to see how this one plays out with the new guy.

Guys like willis, jackson, garvin, hall, and etc has done well bulking up. The problem is not recruiting enough naturally big strong guys.

We are trying to bulk up smaller guys and teams like bama and clemson are bringing them in big and strong.

It'll always be an issue because South Florida simply does not consistently produce top OL talent. Or QBs for that matter. Outside of Lamar Jackson and Teddy Bridgewater, what homegrown QBs have been great recently?

We rain WRs and DBs like manna from heaven, but OL? Good luck. We need to import them from elsewhere.

Well Rakeem Cato for 1

We definitely need to recruit WAY better OL. In the meantime the hope is new OL Coach is > than old one.. Oh yeah, I hope the Tar Heels gain negative yards against us.

Anyone see Manny Navarro's Tweets on Tommy Kennedy. Looking like a mis-evaluated, overrated bust ... already.

A No* OL with no P5 offers shouldnt be able to just walk in as a early enrollee and be on the second team OL. That is **** poor recruiting and development.

You're making stuff up. Nelson was a composite 3* on 247 (source).

EDIT: Rivals had him as a high 2* (5.4), and the other services had him as a low 3*. Still, at least 2* by each major recruiting outlet.

OL has always been the most difficult to recruit/rank and develop. Very few HS Olineman can come in as a true frosh and start. Does it happen? Obviously, do we need to do better recruiting Oline specifically at tackle? Yes. Does it take a few years for guys to develop and have we had coaching turnover essentially every 4 year recruiting cycle? yes.

Not sure why any of this is a mystery or surprising. What is surprising is that I was looking at the 247 composite earlier this week and S. Fla has ZERO guys in the top 30, and only 2 in the top 50. I found THAT surprising.

And Nelson was an 87 on 247s own ratings which seem to be the most accurate. That’s a high three star rating, from a kid they have listed at 6’5 240.

Seems like they really like him on that site.
