Two rules for hiring a new coach, follow them and we are back. Don't and we aren't.
NFL coordinator who had won a title as a coordinator and failed as a HC, has to have charisma/players coach.
Current or former HC at a lower end BCS program who did solid to great that coordinated under an elite college coach.
Guys who pass these rules: (Schnelly, JJ, Butch)Schiano, Dantonio, Strong, Mike Stoops, Steve Spagnuolo, Josh McDaniels, Jack Del Rio, Dan Mullen......I'm sure there are several other NFL guys I can't think of...Guys who were taken before we could who fit this: Sumlin, Sarkisian.
Guys who fail these rules: (Coker, Shannon, Golden, Dennis Erickson) James Franklin, Cristobal, Chud, Patterson, Kirby Smart, Muschamp, Kiffin, and on and on.
Is it coincidence that every coach we had who didn't fit within these rules failed here, and the ones who did had wild success?
Dennis Erickson failed these rules but won two chippers here? While not perfect I doubt he could be considered a failure. He had some positive qualities unlike Coker.
Coker won a ship too. Both let the program rot and eventually were seen as having won with the previous coaches failures. Dennis brought as much bad in the end as he did good. Same as Coker. Both have rings, neither is a guy who built or sustained the program, in fact both did the opposite. And this is from a Dennis fan, I personally like the guy. But he rode JJs wave and when it died showed who he really was.
Coker couldn't hold Erickson jock strap and it isn't even close. Just stop.
This isn't a ****ing contest of who was a better coach. Dennis was CLEARLY a better coach. But neither was the RIGHT coach for this school, ESPECIALLY given our current situation. Dennis coming off of what JJ built was great. Dennis coming off what we have now WOULD NEVER WORK. Thats the whole point.
