First of all, let me state that I am saddened by the current state of affairs as it pertains to bowl games. I enjoyed the buildup, anticipation, and pageantry of the events for the vast majority of my life.
It was 3 hours of free publicity for the teams and their league, a nice day out for fans who can make it, and an event for the players. It was a nice capstone, a last hurrah, for the guys who get reps but will be going pro in something other than playing football. It was an opportunity for coaches to get to know some of their "next guys up."
Unfortunately, the current bowl scene is the logical result of, first, the transfer portal, then the college football playoff. To some extent, NIL is also an issue, but that goes both ways. NIL can incentivize playing in a bowl game.
The Covid year of 2020 just added accelerant to the flame. The breadth and depth of opt-outs made the bowl season impossible. I remember when we had to withdraw our own participation in 2021 for lack of players.
But I think to the years of playing in the Pinstripe Bowl in particular. It's freezing cold, we're 7-5, and clearly the vast majority of the players just didn't want to be there at all. In retrospect, we shouldn't have bothered.
K-State, Iowa State, and ND have now opted out of this year's games. I'm undecided as to whether I agree with it, but I do understand it. The dudes going to the NFL almost certainly won't play, for injury risk. The dudes portaling are leaving. Lame duck staffs are better off inking their next job.
I'm one of those people who really enjoyed "the most wonderful time of the year" watching the bowl games. But there's no pretending that it's what it used to be.
I don't know how to "fix it," and I'm not sure it can be. Sad, but I've accepted it.
I agree with the bolded. This 100% has only to do with corruption within ESPN and the SEC. ND wasn't going to play that game. I am proud of them for having big enough balls to do it. The people saying they are pu***** are wrong. The pu*** thing to do would be to bend over and take it. Allowing the network that colluded against you to profit from you in the bowl. Absolutely not! Keep your money!! Once again, Coach Free and the ND leadership having big ones and doing what is right. ESPN is just crying because ND is pushing back on their corruption. If ND could have gone to the Sun Bowl on CBS or Holiday bowl on FOX, they would have accepted. That is 100% what the decision was. A ***** you to corrupt ESPN.

I actually like Marcus Freeman, but this is a terrible lesson to teach these kids.
I get why they’re ****ed — and honestly, they have every right to be. They didn’t deserve to get in over us, but they probably did deserve a bid over Oklahoma or Alabama.
But you don’t take your ball and go home. You finish the season.
Freeman is the adult in the room. He needed to be the teacher here and lead by example. The life lesson is more important than the bowl game.
Tell me you’re not throwing a hissy fit while you’re laying down on the down on the floor kicking and screaming******* pussies
The first sentence is correct. This is SEC/ESPN's fruit of their poisonous tree. This 100% has only to do with corruption within ESPN and the SEC. ND wasn't going to play that game. I think if the move the bowls games to before the start of the regular season and still base it off the prior season rankings. Would be a great lead up to the season and would have marquee matchups at full strength.Someone else posted it. Turn the other bowl games into a second tournament like the NIT

I agree. Miami/ND are not enemies in this--I feel for ND because I was mentally prepared to be on the receiving end of this shafting by $ECPN.This 100% has only to do with corruption within ESPN and the SEC. That's BS in the age of sports gambling and rampant corruption/malfeasance.Any team with 2 losses can’t blame anyone but their self if they don’t get in.
