NO UM FOR BECKHAM'S NEW STADIUM

I'm sure if we wanted to we could get out of that (frankly ridiculous) lease at Sun Life Stadium and get on board with the Beckham stadium plan.

****, get Adidas involved (pretty sure Becks is still an Adidas shill), and let them partially fund it in exchange for the stadium naming rights. Tarp off those extra 15k seats for the MLS games (design it so they're the second tier or something).

Simple. Sadly the UM just doesn't give a **** about the football team.

I think it will be an amazing stadium. Sure, we'd all like to see us play in a stadium close to the OB site, but Sun Life is getting major upgrades, not just a fresh coat of paint. I was skeptical at first, but after seeing the plans I think it'll be very, very nice.
Good. The renovated sun life is going to be light years better than that mls stadium.

Who cares, it's still far away and it's not conducive to a college game deal feel! When will you guys get that??

This.

The stands at the new SLS only moved 8 yards closer to the field, thats still 22 yards from the sideline. It will still feel like a pro stadium that is too cavernous without an intimate college stadium feel

So you're blaming the fans then?

The size of Sun Life is not optimal for UM, but the location is the biggest problem. That is one of the bigger reasons no one goes.

no one went to the OB either when we didnt play anyone w a pulse.

when we were dominant in 01, we still cant sell out games unless its a big name opponent. that wont ever change in miami.

I don't disagree on sellouts, but I was there in the 90s and early 2000s and a **** of a lot more students went then - for multiple reasons. The teams were obviously better, but proximity was a big factor. Anyway, this horse is dead.

i mean when were better more students and fans general will show up. when i was at UM, if it was a noon game against a nobody, no one was taking the metro from campus to culver and busing it to the game. especially that 07 year. it was a struggle with the million noon games we had then. whichever moron at ESPN decided noon games for canes should be fired. thats gonna be a pain in the *** no matter where the stadium is located. i had experienced both stadiums as a student and growing up experienced the oB obviously. the oB will always be the GOAT but the attendance issues continued regardless. poor product = no shows for the semi decent opponents and great opponent = the thing to do in miami. miami doesnt even need every student at the games anyways. we have such a small student pop that we mainly rely on the locals to fill the stadium.

Donna's SLS lease is clearly the issue. As obvious as it always should have been, we're too inept/lazy/timid/cheap/content to deal with Ross.

Gimenez on MLS: ‘It’s Up to The City of Miami’ « CBS Miami

What about the feasibility of the Canes and MLS franchise partnering up on a new stadium? Gimenez wonders whether it’s worth the effort, considering the University has a lengthy lease with Stephen Ross at Sun Life Stadium.

“I think it’s up to UM,” Gimenez said. “I believe that MLS is willing to do it. I think right now maybe UM is kind of hesitating about it.”

Tad Footeball, the Joe Robbie Stadium lease is just another great decision by Donna Shalala for UM. Why would anyone want to have flexibility? It's always prudent to sign long term agreements. GTFOH! Donna Shalala is the worst thing to ever happen to UM.

Sadly, it also reflects upon the people that remain in power too. Disirregardless of even how one feels about moving to a 40000 seat venue or w/e, we seemingly don't even have the option to consider it as the current admin is too inept/ineffectual to try to force Ross' hand over Shalala's mess. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Leases are broken every day. Political pressure, public opinion pressure, etc. Play the victim and portray Ross' "greed" as preventing UM from ever having a homefield advantage or anything resembling a college or OB-esque atmosphere. Again, this would take an actual effort combined with a modicum of public relations dexterity in conjunction with UM willing to flex some political muscle. None of that has ever been willing to be done in relation to the stadium issue and that doesn't even account for our apparent unwillingness to contribute any money toward anything.

true, but I would venture to say that the lease does have a buyout, most leases that long do because it is not reasonable or prudent to sign a lease for that long. what and when the buyout is, no one is telling, probably because there is a confidentiality provision in the lease.

Fact!!!

From signing Golden prematurely to a lifetime contract, to signing a double life sentence contract with SLS, to low key underminding Butch Davis...this lady has single handily tore down an illustrious football program. Literally she was the black widow for our football program.

How does a private school in Coral Gables, charging $50K per year for tuition, get to play the victim role and complain about SLS greed?

The only way that would work is if the school was crying broke ...

And they can't cry broke, get out of the lease, then go fund a brand new stadium!

I get that we are all fans, and mostly view this from our own perspective. But there has to be some logic to this ...

Leases can get broken when there are financial considerations. But as far as I understand, neither UM or the fans are saying the finances at SLS don't work ... Folks are just saying they would prefer something different ... Something smaller and closer to campus, or to the OB site ... And that's not enough of a reason for Ross to agree to terminate the lease, IMO.

Donna's SLS lease is clearly the issue. As obvious as it always should have been, we're too inept/lazy/timid/cheap/content to deal with Ross.

Where is the Marlins culpability in all of this? They are the ones who made back door deals with the Miami politicians to get a sweetheart of a deal on their stadium and the parking lot. They also will benefit from any MLS/UM stadium deal in parking revenue, they should be the ones that pay Ross to get UM out of its lease.
