New stadium venues, Overtown or Tropical Park?

For someone that isn't from the area like myself, how much closer is Tropical Park to the University than Sun Life is?

5 Miles away, so about 15 minutes. Sunlife is about 30 miles and takes 45-60 minutes. Some days less.

A stadium closer to campus would be nice for many people, but I have a hard time imagining it would boost attendance that much. Miami people just like doing other stuff so if the game isn't a big one they aren't that interested. Always been that way.

I just want to know when/where/how can we donate?

They are going to have to get everything lined up with the city and get a price on the location and all the private owned land (which was the issue with Beckham not getting the area, private land owners wanting a ridiculous amount of money). Then, they will probably start funding for it.

Getting through the process will be the hard part, once they start the funding it will be a breeze. I remember how fast FAU raised an insane amount of money, Baylor did the same, and even Tulane raised a ton of money very soon after they announced their plans. Miami should have the boosters and fan base to do the same, if not more, in a short period of time than those schools, especially with this guy in the fold. The connections he has are ridiculous.

I agree with this to a certain extent but at the same time it will be a lot easier to fill a smaller stadium with 40-45k than a 65k stadium, plus a new smaller stadium like will be more intimate and will have a college atmosphere

It would fill up a lot easier and we would no longer be a national embarrassment based on our stadium being half empty, even though attendance numbers would basically be the same.

Also, it would appeal even more for recruiting. I don't even think Sun Life hurts us that bad in recruiting or is any part of the reason we aren't a winning program. It would just be nice to have our own stadium.

This eliminates any question of whether we are a serious program or not

4 miles vs 21 miles

I'm a UM student and I live right by tropical park so I do the commute multiple times everyday. It's not far at all but I'm not sure the roads around there could even handle that type of traffic haha, regardless I would be very, very happy to see us move to tropical park

Thanks for all the replies guys, my next question is say we get a 45k stadium, what would they do if we played a top 5 matchup at home that would draw 75k at Sun Life?

it's not just the distance. it's the atmosphere itself.

sun life is soooo dead.

for the past 7 seasons I've been going there, i can count on one hand when the place felt "alive."

the last one was during the 2014 fsuck game where we played to not lose and lost in the 2nd half.

I think that would be part of the deal, we would have to buy the land, fund the build of the stadium, and pay even more to restructure the outskirts to develop a better traffic system around the area

Yep. I've always thought this was about getting a more appropriate venue size-wise and one that'd create an actual college atmosphere. Driving up attendance wasn't the main goal but stabilizing it at around 45k consistently with the obvious ability to potentially charge more for a more in demand product. Lemonis mentioned this before but you'd also get naming rights monies annually as well.

Well, pretty big difference between 20,000 empty seats or 45,000-50,000 empty seats, not to mention the noise factor.

This is pretty **** crucial to explore.

You would think we could get a ton of the funding through naming rights for the stadium, field, scoreboard, etc. right? Hold bids for all of that and you should take care of a large portion

At least the guy is trying. So many times you hear "a stadium close to campus is never going to happen," but no one really did anything about it. I appreciate him trying to get the ball rolling.

Is playing in overtown really better?

No it's not. I don't understand why people are perseverating on this Beckham stadium idea. We'd be moving to a smaller worse stadium. We'd still be off campus. We'd still be the second fiddle tenant. We'd lose large crowd capability for big games. We'd lose the roof covering. All for what? To gain a couple miles closer to campus? It doesn't make any sense.

Crown this guy for at least trying. One can dream this comes true. Miami will continue to rot in SLS like everything else that has played in that ****** venue has.

On campus isn't happening but tropical park is the closest realistic location. A couple miles in Miami is a 20 minute or more difference in the ride from the school. That is what makes sense. It's not all about the fan base, we are going to draw the same crowd, it will just look like a full stadium and save us national embarrassment.

Also, it's about the players. It gives them a real home field, like I said it is 20 minutes closer. You think they enjoy a 45 min ride on a bus for a home game?

People show up when you are winning. South Florida is just a front running crowd, always has. As to Dolphin Stadium, the capacity is 65K and I believe for the Canes they will be putting a huge tarp at the upperdeck of one endzone which will drop the capacity to about 57K. This is a good thing. Fans just need to show up!

That's where SunLife comes into play and can be apart of the buy out negotiation; we promise them at least one major game a year.

It has nothing to due with attendance...IT'S NOT A COLLEGE ATMOSPHERE.

College games are all about the vicinity of the fans. Do you recall how lame it was when we beat a then #12 ranked UF team at home? Did it feel like home field advantage to you, even though it was "packed?" The fans are supposed to be closer to field. The student section is supposed to be right on top of the opponents. The stadium is supposed to jump and rock. That's a college atmosphere.

Even w/ all the renovations being done, SLS still does not provide a game day atmosphere for the collegiate experience. Those locker rooms are still not ours...those SEAT COLORS have nothing to do with the Hurricanes. The renovations are for the Dolphins and the Dolphins only. Those renovations are for Ross' bid for the Super Bowl in the future and other major events....AGAIN, they are not for us and that's why IT STILL does not feel like home field advantage for us or a collegiate atmosphere for football.
