New NCAA redshirt rule

It doesn't make any sense to save the 4 games for the end.
No, what'll happen is a lot of freshman are going to get early pt in the season, to see what they can do. Then after they played 4 games we either RS them or keep playing them. It would make no sense to wait till the last 4 games of the season to play them - unless it's completely due to injury.

I'm excited for what this means for QBs. I really ******* hope Perry and Jarren are our QB for the first 4 weeks (pre-acc). If they play good, they start the rest of the season. If they play like ***, then and only then will Rosier play.
What if it's a freshman who couldn't enroll until the summer and it took them some time to fully grasp the playbook? Kind of like Kosi last year. He wasn't comfortable with the playbook until after halfway through the season. Maybe instead of playing Sherriffs we could've gotten a look at Kosi late in the year when Richt pulled Rosier.

I like this. Let the first four games be their auditions. You ball out, and you don't redshirt. Period.

Even more than opportunity I love that players don’t lose a year if they’re injured early in the season or are forced to play because another guy got hurt

Just imagine how differently we’d be looking at this season if Morris playing for Jacory hadn’t cost him his freshman season and MCDermott got another year after being hurt against Duke early his first year.

Does RS Jr. Kaaya blow town after a potential 12-1 season last year with KC anchoring the O-line and all these new weapons coming to campus?

Could have been very interesting.

I mean at the end of the day the point I'm making is you don't purposefully hold a guy back from playing until the end of the year when you think he can make an impact or be an improvement is my point. If you think a freshman like Lingard is ready to play day 1, you play them for those first 4 games, then evaluate his performance, and either decide to keep playing him or redshirt him. ....you don't hold Lingard out until with the plan to use him the final 4 weeks. thats the point I was making.

Obviously you don't play someone if they 100% aren't ready as was the case with Kosi last year.

Richt doesn't bring any kids any with the plan to redshirt them. If they can help, he'll play them. Especially a guy like Lingard. I'm just saying I can see the benefit of playing a guy later in the year where he may not have been ready early on mentally or physically.

It'll be good to give some guys work in early games to see what they got. If you think someone is going to be so impactful that you only want them in for the last few games, then why not just burn their redshirt to begin with. It's not likely they will stay all five years anyways if they are that type of a player.

the very smartest of coaches will use these 4 games very well. IE get a rotation of 4 game players that you can then redshirt and keep for another year while still keeping a strong team overall throughout the year (healthier).

Somehow missed this. How is this not a bigger thread? Huge news. YUGE. Best part is it allows young guys to get their feet wet in big moments without penalty. Veteran experience, rookie status.

Just for instance, Tua Tagovailoa would still be a freshman this year. #gamechanger

Eventually they'll add a 5th year of eligibility. The average student takes 5.5 years to obtain a bachelors degree. Makes sense to give an athlete 5 years anyway.

As another poster mentioned, the rule "allows football players to preserve a season of competition if, for example, injuries or other factors result in them competing in a small number of games."

Unless poor performance counts as an 'other factor' this rule does not read like incoming players have four free games.

Need more information.

Actually, that's exactly how the rule reads. Four games to play without losing a season of eligibility at any point of the season. Doesn't have to be at the beginning of the season.

If we wanted to throw Kosi in there last year against Pitt when Rosier got pulled it would have been no different than if he was thrown in there because Rosier was injured.

I mean sure. But ppl on here have been saying to literally plan on not playing the freshman until the final 4 weeks...that's just stupid is my point

This is BIG news to say the least....
After LSU we play 3 cupcakes, perfect time to get Williams some time in and still have a redshirt I’m just saying... Richt will certainly be more amped to see what the young gun can do during the actual season with this rule in effect
I don't think he takes a shirt, but I agree. He will see the field early.

Most Collegiate athletes graduate a lot sooner with the special attention received. But it still doesn't take away from the lack of money revenue.

Can teams save the 4 games for the final four games? I'd rather save those games for the most important games and the kid still comes back as a freshman the next year. Lots of possibilities here. Might have all new impact players in the post-season.
A guy that's good enough to save for your 4 toughest games as a freshman isn't staying 4 years. It's a good rule but it probably won't be as big a factor as some might think. Richt doesn't sit a freshman that can contribute to "save his redshirt" regardless. He's proven that.

Just wish this rule was in place last year.

It may have made a difference during our 3 game downward spiral
