Look, let's all calm down and just work through these realities. With facts. Not hype and 12 year-old anecdotal evidence.
1. Stock price doesn't matter (market cap is the better metric anyhow). We are not getting Nike or adidas stock as a part of our deal.
2. On and Hoka and Asics and every other brand NOT named Nike or adidas...also has no bearing on the conversation.
3. ADMITTEDLY, the prior Nike CEO got the priorities messed up, and the current CEO is fixing things. It will take time and the TIMING of our renewal is poor FROM NIKE'S STANDPOINT if they are trying to get back together with Miami.
4. ADMITTEDLY (by me anyhow), adidas has done a good job of getting in the high school game, the 7-on-7 game, and the "we're going to pay some NIL on top of the deal" game. The TIMING of this is fantastic FROM ADIDAS'S STANDPOINT if they are trying to retain Miami.
5. Repeatedly, I have cited a couple of key points that should be taken into account in the analysis. The first is the MYTH of "Nike doesn't love Miami anymore" from 2013 to 2015 when Beta Blake James was ******** up the relationship and the money. The second is this issue of "bad jersey design", which both companies have been guilty of, and the apparel companies' roles should share co-equal blame with the decisions of our past Athletic Directors. And finally, we should not ignore the ups and downs of adidas-love. One minute they love Miami. Within two years, they are giving a better deal to Louisville and not honoring the terms of the Miami deal (to match). This hot-cold adidas has been observed in other areas too, as
@Rellyrell has pointed out. So, yes, this has a bearing on whether you trust everything adidas promises while they try to land Contract 2.0.
6. We must ISOLATE on the two broad components of the deliverables (setting aside, for the moment, the NIL and marketing activation components). (A) What does our apparel company partner deliver TO THE ATHLETES, and (B) what does our apparel company partner deliver TO THE FANS (I'll get to the cash money in point #7). In this regard, I believe that Nike has the edge in both. NOT IN RUNNING SHOES. But in jersey quality, cleats quality, equipment quality. And in volume, variety, and quality of fan merchandise. Are these things insurmountable? No, but I still believe them to be very important. Some can mock whether
@Rellyrell 's list of player injuries (in the adidas time period) should be relied upon, but if there is a differential between how Nike outfits players and how adidas outfits players, it should be discussed. I can't tell whether "it's all about the shoes" is the sole cause or direct cause or one of several causes of each injury, I just know that there are some differences in approach. As for the fan gear, I've already made it clear that I'm no longer buying UM-adidas merch, it's just not good. But to each his own, and if you really like it, that's fine. I'll just say that my 15 year old Nike polos are holding up better than my 5 year old adidas polos.
7. The cash-money. Now we get down to the nitty-gritty. I've made the case many times, and passionately. I (and most SEC schools) don't give a **** about annual guarantees. Each year, the "new" renewals and "new" contracts will outstrip us, and make the "2027 extension numbers" look like peanuts. The simple solution, and the solution that TRULY shows whether an apparel company wants to be our partner (regardless of whether we are the #1 or the #10 partner) is the 15% royalty. That's it. The SEC schools know that, and they demand that.
That's it. Stop fighting.
YES, if
@ShadowSpring wants to post a picture of an old Nike jersey, I'll post a picture of an old (or new) adidas jersey.
But on the SUBSTANCE of the arguments, this should be fairly simple. Maybe Nike is still mad about Mario leaving Oregon, which is strange, because Nike seems to have gotten over its feels on PLENTY of other teams and countries. And maybe adidas is going to win this by a wide margin because Nike isn't willing to match on NEW critical deal points, like providing a big chunk of NIL money.
Finally, I don't see why everyone got scared when I started talking about the 15% royalty. It should be something adidas (or Nike) is willing to do, since we are such a "small" school with such a "small" fanbase, right? But it also rewards the strong, and I believe that UM is getting bigger (student-wise) and stronger (sports-wise). And we will sell a LOT more merch under the new contract.
Just my 2 cents. Or 7 cents, with inflation.
