Navaughn Donaldson to Redshirt

I don’t keep up with this type of stuff but I see yall are saying he needs to get down to 330lbs lol I’m like **** that’s still big af how big is he now?? And what’s this talk about getting his legs right about??

Wonder what’s going on with him. You don’t need to take a whole season off to lose weight and get in shape.
He's coming off serious knee surgery and is likely even more out of shape than he was before getting hurt. He could rush back and try to play this season while still rehabbing and trying to get into shape. Or he can use his redshirt season to completely rehab is knee, drop the weight and make a push to be an NFL draft pick after 2021. If he wants to be a professional football player, this is his best move.

Takes guts to sit a year out purely to improve yourself/recover.

We bash kids for jumping early, let’s not bash a kid for staying an additional year. Even if we all agree it’s what he needs to do.

I normally agree with you but I don’t see anyone bashing Navaughn for this decision

I would say he was playing last year at 350. Then he tore his knee up and has been unable to do any training so I'm sure he's north of 350 now. It's much harder for a really big man to recover from knee surgery because he carries so much weight.

I've seen in the past when guys redshirt that isn't their first year on campus then tend to come back with a different attitude and mindset. It's humbling to start 3 years then bang have to red shirt. He knows what he has to do, and it shows he's acknowledged it by accepting it at this point.

Our OL is being set up to be our strength in the future, if not the very near future.

Good move, knee injury is no joke for a 350+ pound man. Hope he dedicates himself to getting into the 330 range. I'm pulling for him.

Kid goes on the Chicken Kitchen Chop-Chop Hold the Rice Diet and he'll be just fine. Can even reward himself with a few ice cream sandwiches every once in a while.

Good for him though. We need to see a kid taking good advice and getting rewarded for it. Fingers crossed.

Apologies for what could be a dumb question, but isn’t there a risk he does this and then goes grad transfer route? Also, if he were healthy by year’s end, can he still play in up to 4 games and still shirt?

There's also a risk Bugs Bunny drops an anvil on his head from the top of a skyscraper. Sometimes, you have to do the right thing and hope things work out. That's what UM and Donaldson are doing here.

There is absolutely no downside to this decision.

How often can you say that about any decision that you’ve ever made? I know there have been very few decisions I made in my life, if any, where there was no downside.

This is one of those rare occasions where there’s a 100% upside and 0% downside to a decision.

Yeah but what about if he decides to give up football and become a monk? What if he...
