I saw an earlier post about Mullen turning the Miami BOT off during his 2010 interview for the Canes HC job and I decided to take a look at these two coaches. We compare players all the time. We will compare Cook and Yearby for the rest of their football lives, so why not compare the coach we could've had and the one we have now? Here goes:
1. For the cloud crowd:
No coach coaches in a vacuum so before we go down the long, foggy analysis of the cloud effect, let's look at the recruiting classes Mullen and Golden have been working with, during the cloud:
RECRUITING CLASS NAT'L RANKINGS
Mullen's average national ranking is 34th. Golden's is 19th. Mullen was able to secure the services of a total of 9 Four-Star Recruits. Golden has signed 27 Four-Star Recruits and 3 Five-Stars. Impressive. Clear advantage to Golden, despite the ominous cloud.
Mississippi has 27 active players in the NFL. Dade, Broward and Palm Beach alone have twice that number and this year the State of Florida has 186. Clearly Mullen is at a disadvantage in terms of the players he has been able to get and the location in which he operates.
2. THEIR RECORDS
For the regular seasons, Golden is 28 and 18 while Mullen is 29 and 17. Slight edge to Mullen. Factor in the brutal schedules he has had, his +2 in the win column in bowl games and the gap widens. Now considering the fact that his team is #4 in the country and in control of the their destiny in the First College Football Playoff and it ain't even close.
3. TALENT DEVELOPMENT
Advantage Mullen. Remember those recruiting class rankings? Well, his defensive FPI's are 28th, 44th, 19th and this year 18th. This year we have righted the ship. Our FPI is 24th, but **** what a journey.
4. SIGNATURE WINS
Golden-0.0 (I'm still hurt dawg). Here's what they say about Mullen:
"The Bulldogs manhandled then-No. 8 LSU in a 34-29 victory in Death Valley on Saturday night, notching the biggest win of his Mississippi State career. If the previous wins over ranked opponents were considered "signature wins" this one was written in ink, paint and etched in stone."
5. Questions (that will never be answered):
1) Who's better/Who you got? Mullen or Golden?
2) If Mullen coached the Canes what would our record be today?
3) If Mullen coached the Canes would we have an ACC title?
