Yes. When teams mutiny and quit on a coach, the WRs are usually the initial catalysts on offense and the DBs are usually the catalysts on defense, and the sentiment spreads from there. DBs show their dismay on the field with missed tackles and poor focus (blown assignments). WRs show it with dropped passes and lazy route running.
Some defensive players (namely DBs) probably believe that Heatherman’s scheme, tendencies, adjustments and personnel decisions SINCE and in response to the injuries to OJ, Jabari Antoine and X Lucus have put them in a position to be unsuccessful. His adjustment to more soft zone, provenly unsuccessful personnel decision of having Chase and Mo in coverage, and the “bend but don’t break” mentality, has them playing lackluster and uninspired football.
They feel out schemed and outsmarted and that’s when poor tackling takes effect.
There is no way that our DBs play zone defense this poorly at full focus, effort and motivation. Theres a clear disconnect and Heatherman needs to connect with them this week. It happened last year and it can happen again. He can fix this by changing his tendencies and personnel groupings at key junctures in the game. There’s a reason NC State blew out their next opponent after their coach got fired, every team had this response to change.
Heatherman needs to figuratively fire himself this week, and call this game the way his replacement would hypothetically. The players will respond to a more aggressive adjustment that shows trust in their abilities.
