Missed Tackles

Yes. When teams mutiny and quit on a coach, the WRs are usually the initial catalysts on offense and the DBs are usually the catalysts on defense, and the sentiment spreads from there. DBs show their dismay on the field with missed tackles and poor focus (blown assignments). WRs show it with dropped passes and lazy route running.

Some defensive players (namely DBs) probably believe that Heatherman’s scheme, tendencies, adjustments and personnel decisions SINCE and in response to the injuries to OJ, Jabari Antoine and X Lucus have put them in a position to be unsuccessful. His adjustment to more soft zone, provenly unsuccessful personnel decision of having Chase and Mo in coverage, and the “bend but don’t break” mentality, has them playing lackluster and uninspired football.

They feel out schemed and outsmarted and that’s when poor tackling takes effect.

There is no way that our DBs play zone defense this poorly at full focus, effort and motivation. Theres a clear disconnect and Heatherman needs to connect with them this week. It happened last year and it can happen again. He can fix this by changing his tendencies and personnel groupings at key junctures in the game. There’s a reason NC State blew out their next opponent after their coach got fired, every team had this response to change.

Heatherman needs to figuratively fire himself this week, and call this game the way his replacement would hypothetically. The players will respond to a more aggressive adjustment that shows trust in their abilities.
If we’re 8-0 & No 1 in the country & DBs have hurt feelings, then we need to empty the room. Or maybe they can get their mojo back by lowering a shoulder & wrapping up a tackle.

if I'm Mario, I'm blowing those stats up on posters and putting them in all the D meeting rooms this week.......

I’ve been harping on tackling since week one. This isn’t a bad tackling team , it’s an atrocious tackling team. Horrible technique and even worse effort. We’re entering the Manny Diaz tackling level. Which I didn’t think was possible.

Teams that win natties typically are a minimum of top 25 in tackling and tend to be more towards top ten . That’s just going back this decade. We’ve been in the 100’s most of the year and after the last game i’d wager it’s more 110’s-120’s.

The defense is already forcing the offense to be super human but this can’t continue if we want to hit all of our goals. Expecting the offense to score 6-7 drives won’t cut it against good teams. Things have to improve dramatically.

Watching Georgia play defense is a thing of beauty.

And even they have their flaws.

U took “hurt feelings” from what I wrote. Then you are responding just like the players are.

Watched Coach Hayes review.
The tackling is an abomination REGARDLESS OF COVERAGE.
Chase Smith and Poyser are absolute liabilities right now. The LBs are dropping 5 yards!!!!! They're awareness in zone is as bad as I've ever seen it. Chase is turning his back to the ******* QB!!!
Poyser ain't it. Wasn't he supposed to be the heir apparent to Jackobi?
Well he's not on the same fvqing
planet. If he's not playing with double sprained ac joints, take him off the field. He makes Gervin Hall look like Ronnie Lott.
Nobody is taking it to blockers! Everyone except Mo is passive and not attacking blockers in the open field!
I'm not sure what Heatherman is supposed to do with this garbage back 7.
Man do we miss Jackobi and Scott.
The tape is embarrassing.

This is just awful. D1 players should not be this bad at anything.

I’ve explained this in another thread but we’re elite at not allowing 20+ yard passes and in the 100’s allowing 10+ yarders.

Edwards threw it 38 times and his average was 6 yards. They beat us in TOP.

You cannot protect against big plays and keep everything in front of you when you’re this and at tackling. It’s death by 1,000 cuts and allows other teams to keep your offense off the field. Which is the undeniable strength of this team. They’re trying to play complementary football, when in reality it’s doing the opposite. It’s keeping other teams in the game, and putting more pressure on your offense to be perfect bc it shortens the game.
ESPECIALLY with the new NFL style rules. They changed them 2 years ago, and it's like everyone forgot about them.

It brings lesser teams more into games because possessions are limited. Common sense tells you the better team touches ball less then games will be closer. This compounded with transfer portal and NIL leveling playing field some also.

From @ confcommandos on X:

"Miami had 7 possessions against UNC, excluding kneeldowns. They scored on 6 of them, but the running clock wipes out a quarter of gameplay. So it’s actually very disingenuous for UNC to be up 28-24 well into the 4th when Miami is only getting 5 possessions through 50 minutes"

Maybe I am mis-remembering but I thought this issue got cleaned up last season?
Couple things with this.. By numbers we missed tackles also last season but we came in waves (nowhere this bad), the effort and swarm was very apparent on tape.. But guys like Keionte with 4.2 speed cover up alot of sins.. Poyser was a bad tackler last season also, he plays fast and flies down hill but when he would miss there were other guys there to clean up.. We lack that this season. Jakobe was a cleanup guy and enforcer, we lack that. We didnt portal anyone for his position so you have true freshman swimming in deep waters, still trying to learn the plays and where to be..

Idk where the bad habits came from but we need to have better football IQ (we are getting KILLED with screen passes), we need to play with better urgency and swarm to ball. That is supposed to be culture and foundational since day 1, idk if you can flip switch in Nov and have guys play better. We seem to have a bunch of guys who cant hit, injured or scared of contact. Didnt recruit right guys.

Players are thinking too much...confidence goes down and it trickles down to everything, not just coverages & assignments but tackling as well.
Buddy you gotta watch the Coach Hayes's video that I posted.
Heatherman is not calling complicated stuff. This is about LBs not getting depth, not getting hands on WRs, S back peddling into the end zone instead of making flat feet reads, not attacking open field blockers, horrible technique in man.
Poyser was a complete abomination.
Didnt matter whether he was in zone or man, he was an utter failure.
This isn't complex, these are bad players IMO.
