Missed Tackles

From another thread but also germane to this one:

“A good coordinator, offensive or defensive, accentuates players’ strengths and mitigates their weaknesses through scheme and game situation management.

Heatherman is failing at this. We are asking certain players to do things they fundamentally cannot do.

Scheme or otherwise, that’s where the problem starts”

Players are thinking too much...confidence goes down and it trickles down to everything, not just coverages & assignments but tackling as well.
Bull**** if you truly paid attention to the games some players on defense effort and physicality sucks their waiting for someone else to make the play. I never seen so many player dive to make tackles no one is running through tackles....**** poor effort and lazy ****** attitudes.

**** needs to change asap!!

The effort is what’s most appalling

Poyser is having a rough season imo. And I was a fan of his coming in.

Safety/Nickle play and LB play (against the pass, they are killers vs. the run) are our biggest problem. Lucas had a rough one vs.. FSU but overall outside corner play has been good imo.

I need to see Fitz back at either safety or nickle, it looked he still got a lot of snaps outside vs. UNC.

200 receiving yards to TE/RB vs. UNC

Did you watch the film breakdown or just the game?
If you watch the film review, you will see that we fail in man and zone.
*Poyser was so incredibly bad in every phase and coverage.
*JJ was really bad in coverage and his fits weren't great. He's young and still makes ays tho.
*Fitz was in the clouds on UNC's last TD. No clue what he was looking at. He picks that ball last year.
*I don't know what to say about Chase in coverage. He got caught in the muck one but he has no awareness in zones and routinely turns his back, not to run with a crosser but to identify what is behind him. I don't even know that I've ever been seen someone do that.
*LBs are getting zero depth on their drops. Multiple times during that game we had the gaps mugged up or were showing SIM pressures only to drop 5 yards from the line of scrimmage.

The failure isn't as simple as the scheme. It's technique, awareness, ability AND THE PLAYERS!

Poyser should not be on the field. I'd rather see Thorton.

I’ve been harping on tackling since week one. This isn’t a bad tackling team , it’s an atrocious tackling team. Horrible technique and even worse effort. We’re entering the Manny Diaz tackling level. Which I didn’t think was possible.

Teams that win natties typically are a minimum of top 25 in tackling and tend to be more towards top ten . That’s just going back this decade. We’ve been in the 100’s most of the year and after the last game i’d wager it’s more 110’s-120’s.

The defense is already forcing the offense to be super human but this can’t continue if we want to hit all of our goals. Expecting the offense to score 6-7 drives won’t cut it against good teams. Things have to improve dramatically.
What do you attribute it to vs. last season (outside of jimmy's and joes)?

We miss tackles and we are not swarming to the ball. DBs have tackled horribly this year. I guess that's what happens when you lose two stud DBs (0/8).

How do you fix tackling at this point in the year?
By now, either you can tackle or you can't...
You can fix it. It's technique, effort and playing under control.
JJ and Thorton play with tremendous effort, but they play out of control.

Lucas is poor effort and technique.

Poyser just sucks all around. Straight he does nothing well other than he's decent in the post.

Fitz just isn't physical at all.

If it can be fixed, why hasn't it been fixed already? This has been a problem for awhile, no?

I totally agree. I've been screaming about this since Wake. We beat Wake by 40 if we could just tackle and finish plays behind the LOS.

My hope or cope, is that Mario put that slop tape on display for the whole team to see this morning and that sparks something similar like it did last year after the SMU game.

But you might be right, Poyser, Lucas, Omar and Chase are tenured players.
I'll give JJ the benefit of the doubt.

Bingo. My thoughts exactly on both of these.

JJ is all over the field and you can tell speed and athleticism and killer instinct is there. Should be a good one. But his overall coverage leaves a lot to be desired right now. He and Poyser are almost if not as sloppy as Thornton tackling right now too. Poyser is heading in the wrong direction fast, and appears frustrated and losing confidence (As well as his man lol)…. From what I saw (and I haven't rewatched) Poyser is just as much to complain in coverage as the LB (and more so with the tackling). Again 200 yards receiving by RB/TE!

Fitz just isn't physical at all.

Maybe not, but I'm not sure it's that glaring. I'd rather have him in safety righty now, maybe not the nickle with all the blitzing and run fits. But I'd rather have him as safety right now. Doesn't have the knock back power, but I think he can play more under control and get his man on the ground when needed

Watch the Coach Hayes Bad and Ugly segment, Poyser looked like he never played ball before.
JJ has to be a better tackler and is a liability in pass pro at times.

I think the problem is we have a lot of similar players and they're trying to get JJ on the field. JJ, Thorton and Poyser are all very similar and are liabilities in man.
