Missed Tackles

Open field tackling is the biggest issue, even short pass/screen is turning from short gain to a much longer gain. UNC threw the ball probably 20+ times on early downs because they know Chase and Toure will be on field and they arent good in open field. NONE of the DBs can tackle in open field.. I dont know how you change that quickly. There are no Keionte and we didnt even portal a replacement for Jakobe.. So we lose everything we had last year on back end when it comes to tackling.

Blame heatherman
He shares a lot of the blame for sure.

But the players also have to take accountability. Some of those you just got to make.

You got in one frame 3 dudes with an angle on their rb , they got him dead to rights with the sideline on his six and they still allowed a huge gain.

The other Thorton is literally right in front of him ( after a Dunningan missed tackle) and gets run over.

Unacceptable effort.

Watching how a couple of our players in the secondary are moving right now, I think they are dealing with shoulder issues. Tackling with a bad shoulder sucks. Not making excuses for them, but playing through stuff doesn't help.

I’ve explained this in another thread but we’re elite at not allowing 20+ yard passes and in the 100’s allowing 10+ yarders.

Edwards threw it 38 times and his average was 6 yards. They beat us in TOP.

You cannot protect against big plays and keep everything in front of you when you’re this and at tackling. It’s death by 1,000 cuts and allows other teams to keep your offense off the field. Which is the undeniable strength of this team. They’re trying to play complementary football, when in reality it’s doing the opposite. It’s keeping other teams in the game, and putting more pressure on your offense to be perfect bc it shortens the game.

Scrap the zone. We have the athletes to play man and if we get beaten we can score. If we play mand and blitz we can get some stops

Funny thing is our “swarm” arrived on most of those outside screens, but the tackling was reminiscent of flag football.

Need defensive leaders on the team. Hold players accountable and lead by example. It is what Toney does on offense. You think a WR is going to go soft on a block when they share a room with Toney?

Lightfoot is probably closest we have. Maybe Fitz. Unfortunately this doesn’t change overnight

I don’t care whether you go zone or man. Just change the post snap picture more and I’m asking please god, send the backers on the blitz and not leave them in coverage.
