Serious question - if you’re the coach, how do you “fix” the pre snap penalties?

This isn’t some set up trap question. I’m asking because I think it’s way more on the players then the coaches because I can’t see anyway on Earth the coaches haven’t been screaming at these guys and making them run gassers.

That's a good question, and I've never coached offensive line, so I'm sure the dudes who have and are being paid handsomely to coach it here are trying everything they can.

You just have to drill it over and over and over and over again. I'm sure the staff is doing nothing different this year than they were last year. Kids are just making more mistakes. I don't have any data but I'm thinking we've probably had about as many false starts through 6 games this year as we did in 12 games last year. Again, could be wrong. That's just how it seems, though.

Of course the coaches are going nuts. During the games and during practice. Everyone understands this **** cannot happen. But I really can't give you an answer on why it does. If I could, I'd be coaching the offensive line for an NFL team and we wouldn't have any false starts. It's just a lack of focus.
 
Correct. Ive coached at youth/ JV level( never O line) and of course every coach , literally, the same things for each unit. D line coaches stress " watch the ball" to not jump. Players still do it. I have zero doubt that AM spends a lot of time on the pre snap stuff. Its up to the player ultimately.

The bench is a great motivator.

The center imo is the big issue.

The offense is bad? Bad like Michael Jackson bad? Or bad as in of poor quality? And if so how do you win 5️⃣ games with such a “BAD” offense?

I've been going to games with a large Alumni base since 1980 and I can tell you they don't think like CIS very often. LOL

The good thing about Mario is he agrees and usually changes things when he's not happy with it.
 
I have a feeling this is all getting blown way out of context by fans.

The air raid offense runs four plays a **** ton:
Inside Zone
Outside Zone
Counter
Jet Sweep

Mirabal has added some T and I formations to the playbook. Personally, I like it as it gives the defenses yet another wrinkle to prepare for.

Now the issues:
Dawson, Mirabal, and Mario, I believe they like the tight splits between linemen to help with LBers blitzing in the gaps, and it helps with double teams during run calls. Air Raid offenses tend to have 3' splits vs 1' splits. Wide splits make the RPO a ton easier to read for QBs. That End is 2 yards further away from the QB/RB. Clearly, they are paid millions so they know something.

Mario wants to control the clock to keep the D off the field. This means no tempo, less offensive snaps, and less drives. It also means more subs for the opponents defense. Just look at how our D gets in trouble when our opponents run tempo... we can't substitute. The best example: 3rd and 10, the D runs out their "nascar" package and we keep 3/1/1 on the field. If we get the 1st, we should run up to the line and RUN the ball down as the DL is likely light in the pants and the D likely has more DBs than DL. Why we don't do this to get ahead of the sticks is beyond me. Ask the coaches making millions.

Dawson has not called many variants in the run game. Who knows if this is Mario/Maribal or Dawson? Does anyone want to analyze Houston's calls in 2022 to see if he ran 80% run calls as inside zone? The second part of this, are the RBs coached to keep bouncing outside like a traditional Air Raid? Normal Air Raid Inside Zone runs have RBs hit the A, bounce to the B, then C (D if running 2 TE) if the inner gaps aren't open.

Lastly, run vs pass %.
Houston 2021: 459 passes for 3802 yards, 515 runs for 1919. 5721yards 12-2 record, 409/gm 33:55 TOP
Houston 2022: 500 passes for 4082 yards, 402 runs for 1846. 5928yards 8-5 record, 456/gm 29:44
Miami 2023: 436 passes for 3354 yards, 440 runs for 2251. 5605 yards 7-6 record, 431/gm 31:52
Miami 2024: 489 passes for 4527 yards, 433 runs for 2456. 6983 yards 10-3 record, 537/gm 32:42
Miami 2025: 188 passes 1592 yards, 208 runs for 882. 2474 yards 5-1, 412/gm (his worst) 32:17
