Midseason Surprises/Disappointments

These topics are always a bit subjective given what each person expected coming into the season but in no particular order:

Pleasant Surprises:

1. Porter: he’s been glue at times and we rarely hear his name. Thank god for him.

2. Jalen Rivers: the OL was gonna be a strength but he was the big question mark. He did have a rough game against UNC but he’s been rock solid at LT.

3. Bain: I mean I had high hopes for good **** grief kid, might be the best player on the team right now.

4. JHH: not sure where we would be without him either. Really cool to see him take a step this year.

5. Flagg: nuff said for a kid that’s taken a beating here.

Disappointments:

1. Davante Brown: who?

2. Kam: controversial pick I’m sure because he is so vital to this team but to my untrained eye an All American (though I didn’t think that was warranted) should be playing smarter than he is.

There’s a few guys that have been injured that I have a bit of a incomplete grade on so far

I think my list reflects my expectations coming into this season. I didn’t expect to beat A&M or Clemson because our talent isn’t there yet so maybe it’s why I am so bullish on our coaches

Curious to hear some other opinions
I’m not going to hold anything against Kam because that concussion really messed him up for awhile. When a scary play like that happens, the psychological aspect of it probably stays with you for a bit. Plus, I read he’s dealing with some sort of ankle injury as well? Now that he’s starting to get healthier I think we’ll start seeing the old Kam again.

Totally fair. He made a lot of the same mistakes last year as well so I was hoping to see some more discipline from him this year

I didn't see a lot of him mentioned...but my #1 surprise is BRESHARD SMITH!

Other Surprises:
- JHH
- DPJ
- Couch (he's been better than the pre-season perceived "JAG" rating).
- Cloyd
- Rivers
- James Williams
- Flagg
- Kevin Beard
- Guidry being a dog

Disappointments
- Kelly (I expected a big 2nd-year jump), personally think his spot is up for grabs in '24 between Wayne and Lightfoot.
- Kam (not that he's bad, just not playing like a bonafide All-American)
- Davonte Brown
- Jadais Richard
- Damari Brown (just in the manner he was talked up in the fall...classic CIS)
- Every single tight end
- Harrell
- Mesidor (just can't stay healthy, disappointed for other reasons beyond playing ability)

For Porter maybe, but I don't think Davis & Couch have been that good. But I don't view CB's in the same way that everyone else does, so what may look like good to play to most doesn't skate past me as easily.

But overall, Addae hasn't really done anything for me that justifies him being on staff. He's a very average recruiter without the Kirby/Muschamp Money Machine backing him & the on the field product hasn't really been great either IMO.
True. I don’t think they’ve been as bad as some expected. He’s definitely been an awful recruiter.

Not sure if anyone thinks Couch has been “good” so much as last year he was less than useless and now he’s…ya know…not useless

It’s a low bar 😂

If only we had one more year of Ivey with Guidry this time… 👀
The CB bar is literally the lowest of any position group & has been at Miami for the last 5 years.

90% of the time, our guys are below average, so anytime they have an average performance fans go crazy & act like they're All-Americans.

CB play at Miami is almost always subpar on a yearly basis, people have just become so accustomed to it, they really don't know what good CB play actually looks like.

I think you are underestimating how much your opinion weighs around here. When you said Jaden Davis was a wasted portal transfer and you had no idea what the staff sees in him...many of us just took your word. I didnt know anything about him at OU tbh. So I basically thought he was the equal to having Ryan Mayes or Nate Dortch out there. So anything above that is a plus for me and everyone else. Thats how much I really didnt expect anything from him. If you think of it along those lines, maybe you will see where some of us are coming from.

All the "He is an NFL prospect" talk was premature after the TAMU game. I think we all can agree on that. Thats not happening.

Surprises:
Dramatic o line improvement
Run defense
Team tackling
Brashard kickoff returns
Offensive RZ efficiency

Disappointments:
Cristobal game management
Too many dumb penalties
Lack of TE usage in pass game
Davonte Brown & J Richard are 👻
Kam not yet playing up to AA standards

Spot on

Also everyone seems to immediately point to DT recruiting but to me the real problem is CB recruiting

Pulling DTs away from the SEC is always gonna be a blood bath but it’s tough to miss on DBs at the rate we have here, and that’s unfortunately leaking into Mario’s tenure which isn’t supposed to happen
