Michael Pinckney

I'm with Macho. Sure people can throw stats at me but things I see on a consistent basis done badly that should be routine at this point that you don't see on the stat sheet like:

- Making proper run fits, filling their proper gap, and containing outside runs. This is literally the basics of playing LB.
- Another basic they don't do consistently well is getting the proper depth in pass coverage. Then again could be a coaching issue.
- Taking proper angles. They (a long with the rest of this team) seems to never try to cut off a runner. I wish more of these players knew that taking proper angles would make them look a second faster then they actually are. That's how those Alabama DB/LBs look fast as **** then run a 4.7 at the NFL combine. ANGLES, ANGLES, ANGLES, ANGLES, ANGLES.

Look at this 1 play I remember from Pinckney vs VT. Had it tried to cut the WR off the WR gets at maximum 2 yards but he instead gets about 40.

Upvote for throwing in Rohan! Go Canes

Never got into the Rohan Marley thing. I guess a lot of it was that he followed Lewis. He was a gutsy kid but he was just too small. He was more of a novelty and you could name twenty Cane LB's that were better at least. Just an opinion.

Agreed. Not the best LB but a very good one. He was a Jimmy Johnson special. Small fast safety mold playing LB running to the ball to gang tackle with bad intentions.

Isn’t that play really Jaquan’s fault?

If he attacks outside in, the play goes right to Pinckney (who’s flowing inside out)

Instead the WR adjusts and makes him, Jaquan, miss - creating a large gain.

It's on both technically. Jaquan is supposed to keep the outside contain and try to funnel the receiver back towards the middle of the field but Mike's angle is so bad, he wouldn't have been there to make the play anyway. You can see he's attacking where the ball carrier is instead of where the ball carrier will be.

Jaquan is more to blame for the result of this play than Pinckney. JJ should have attacked with his head on the outside shoulder and under control. If the WR cuts back then 56 cleans it up.

Agree, bad pursuit angle for mike

Y'all missing the point. It about just taking the proper angles every play whether your involved in the play or not. Jaquan is just to blame but had Pinckney taken a good angle it would have minimized Jaquan's mistake to about 3-4 yards instead of a 40+ yard play.

No, I get the point but I just disagree. Pinckney played it correctly and trusted his teammate was going to do his job. If JJ is not in this play I guarantee Pinckney angles up field.

Do they create TFL's NATURALLY or when they're blitzing? (cause Diaz is a blitz happy guy)
I don't see our guys creating many natural TFL's.

You make a very valid point about the rotations though. I didn't really think of that.

Shaq was on the field for 86% of the plays last year and 87% of the plays his Freshmen year... and still got close to 100 tackles... in each year. Perryman and Spence didn't come off the field. Also they play a totally different defense when Perryman played... The defense is a lot better now in my opinion... they are going down hill... Going doing hill sometimes make you vulnerable to over pursue and even get juke. And finally we are comparing Perryman to 19 year old true Sophomores...

In addition to that a lot of plays came to perryman because the defensive line wasn’t nearly as good as making plays in the backfield compared to what we have now up front

I think that as a LB, game experience is invaluable. Pre-snap reads, learning tendencies, and especially important, making mistakes & learning from them.

It's been said many times that as freshmen, our LBs were told to basically find the ball and attack. They were almost taught not to think, in order to simplify it as much as possible.

I don't want to say there was regression last year, but certainly not the improvement we all hoped for. I would expect that growth to come this year. I would be very surprised if this unit isn't one of the most reliable and productive on our squad.

I like Shaq and Pinckney.

They’re both very solid to above average players. But they need to make big gains this year.

Devin White at LSU, same classification, is an absolute monster. They’re not in his league.

Let’s hope they close the gap this year. If they do, I’m hoping their ability to make plays somewhat makes up for the change in DL playmaking we’ll inevitably see.

What is so great about devin white? I know he’s hyped up but when watching his film I don’t see anything that he does that quarterman or pickney doesn’t do?
He’s making ordinary plays the good college linebackers should make in his film.
What stands out in his film other than his speed and in some of the plays instincts?

Career numbers
Devin white 167 tackles 16.5 tfls 5.5 sacks 1 int.
Shaq quarterman 167 tackles 17 tfls 6 sacks
Michael Pinckney 129 tackles 18.5 tfls 6 sacks 2 ints

I dont Think people understand our linebackers numbers would be even far greater if not for how great the dline has played themselves constantly playing in the backfield making plays limiting the opportunity for the linebackers to put up the 100 tackle seasons and things of that nature. In addition to that the constant subbing that goes on that quite frankly needs to be limited this year

****** city. The Miami fanbase is filled with clowns like this. Quarterman and Pinckney have both been just as productive as Devin White. Not a single bit of difference between them, and yet we got dumbasses like this shi**ing on our own players to suck off others. lol.

When Pinckney and Shaq both leave as mid round TRUE JUNIORS and blow up in the NFL, we'll still have clowns like this sucking off the next up and coming Seminole, Gaytor, or Bulldog at the expense of the next crop of actual Canes.

This stuff is why i hope this program never wins another title. Most Miami fans actually don't deserve it.

I agree on the dumbness from some in our fan base, but hoping this team doesn’t win a title to prove the minority dumb, or b/c they don’t deserve it, is just as idiotic.

Guys like Perryman, Spence and McCarthy didn’t put it together until their third years.

Pinckney and Shaq were more consistent than them as young players, IMO. This is the season they need to take the next step.

Disagree with Perryman D. I remember watching him as a freshman against BC and as a sophomore and he jumped off the field at you. Other than him I agree with this sentiment

Actually just the opposite. We were 2-gapping at nose tackle and getting very little making it much easier to zone block at the 2-level. Denzel was very productive in a bad scheme. He has a 2-time first team all-conference player and a 3rd team All-American. He would have been much more productive in Diaz's defense. Plus, with Denzel he was consistently in the right place, at the right angle, and always struck with power. We've never had stronger and more powerful Mike than he.

Colin McCarthy had a terrific final two years. One of the more underrated Mikes to come through this program. Darryl Sharpton was very solid and had an excellent senior year.

This is Shaq's and Mike's money year potentially. They've been good players their first two years. We need them to step it up and be more productive this year for the defense to take the next step. They are experienced upperclassmen so as long as they stay healthy they should take the next steps. Both should be fun to watch.
