Off-Topic Michael Oher Lawsuit

He just found out earlier this year that he wasn’t actually adopted, since the conservatorship just gave the tuohy’s legal rights over his story, but didn’t legally make him apart of the family. Feel bad for him on that front.

Also turns out the part in the blindside movie about the investigation into the tuohy’s using Michael for his athletic gifts was in fact true.

It always irked me when they showed the recruiting montage with the little brother asking coaches what's in it for him. During the ending, they show the real life kid leading the team out of the tunnel, implying that he DID get something out of it. Even in fiction the SEC commits recruiting violations.. and gets away with it.

The Touhys are shameful af.

Garbage humans.
This is completely false. The Touhys have always shown themselves to be kind hard working good people (ask anyone in Memphis about their generosity) & were wealthy (working their butts off with fast food franchises) long before Oher ever came into their lives. Mr. Touhy also works as broadcaster for the Memphis Grizzlies. Why would they need to profit off Oher’s success? Sounds like Oher has blown his NFL millions, is broke and has now hooked up with a greedy lawyer (who’s also looking for another payday) hence the shake down. Maybe Hollywood can reimburse Oher for what he thinks he’s worth. The media needs to get off “bashing the rich” and show the other side of this story.

Sure they could be all that and also ***** him over. Look forward to outcome of his lawsuit.

I don't usually pay too much interest to these he said/he said disputes but I'm actually interested in hearing the CIS brigade of lawyers weigh in here once some discovery and documentation comes out.

It's been a long time since he played in the league (2016), and even longer since the film (2009).

I don't give a **** about the case, but certainly strikes me as odd that there's a lawsuit all these years later.

Let's see what comes out in discovery.

Sometimes, people are not good, even if they try to pretend they are by mixing in good deeds with the bad. Conning a young man to sign a conservatorship under the guise of an adoption is scumbag ****...which is what he's claiming. The Touhys became wealthier and much more famous after the book, as a result of Oher...so why would they need to profit? You can ask them, but its pretty clear they did profit and no one is even denying it. Even the son on Portnoy said they profited, just not THAT much.

I know one of Michael Oher's oldest friends that he played with him at Ole Miss and they are still great friends to this day...I was aware of the story being a lot of bull**** long ago beyond the depiction of Oher that he had a major issue with, and needless to say, he never had anything good to say about the Touhys and I'll leave it at that.

"Hence the shakedown"...have you read anything on this yet? He's basically saying he can not make a business decision re: his name, image, and likeness and in his book he wrote over 10 years ago (after the Blind Side) he stated that the Touhys told him the conservatorship was the same as an adoption. Why is this coming out now...because he found out it was not in February '23 and they still have control over his NIL. Also, they made a movie that grossed like a half billion dollars about his life and he claims he received no money.

"The Tuohys negotiated a deal with 20th Century Fox that left Oher without any payment for the rights to his name, likeness and life story, while the Tuohy family received a contract price of $225,000 and 2.5% of the film's net proceeds, the petition states. The film has grossed over $300 million, the petition says."

Also, on Pat McAfee today, they were mentioning that these hard working good people of the fast food business were able to open over 170 more restaurants after said movie.

But, this isn't "new" information...

From his book written in 2011 - "he also made a comment about the fact the Tuohys told him that signing to make them his conservators was 'the same thing as adoption'.

He stated: 'They explained to me that it means pretty much the exact same thing at "adoptive parents," but that the laws were just written in a way that took my age into account'."

Also, per some reports, Oher has been distancing himself from the family for a very long time. Not a single member of the family was at the man's wedding and he follows none of them on social media.

“People” (Hollywood) have produced movies, written books etc about others since time began. Hard to believe some people believe all that they see at the movies. It’s called “taking liberty with a script” in LaLa Land. The script for the movie was taken from Michael Lewis’ book. The Touhy’s had every right to negotiate for the movie rights; don’t see why they would owe Oher anything (especially after all that they had done for him over the years). They took him in, enrolled him in a private school, encouraged him to play sports & did everything to help him get college scholarship offers AND supported him through his college years etc. No-one can say how he would have ended up (odds are good the street) if it hadn’t been for their intervention. Would he have even played football if not for them?

As for the conservatorship it’s hard to believe he didn’t know the difference as he’s been dealing with agents/lawyers since he signed with the league. If he continued to ask for money over the years perhaps THEY distanced themselves from HIM. Now he’s asking for $15M (shakedown). No idea how this will turn out (back to sleezy lawyers/grifters) but Mr. Oher is still young, perhaps he should find a real job to support his family.

All y'all writing off the family based off the initial story. Looks like far more coming out now. Perhaps you hold your tongue until all info is out there. I am old enough to remember when in this country you were innocent until proven guilty. Not any longer.......Sad.

This stinks to high heaven. The movie has been out fifteen years and now he realizes it’s all a lie or he’s a victim? That family is worth millions so the “ they did it for the money” stuff doesn’t add up. We live in a victim society and everyone wants to play that card so like i said “ it doesn’t smell right“. On top of that he’s pushing a book so that makes it more suspect.

False. A friend's dad encouraged Oher to enroll at the private school, the Tuohy's had nothing to do with that. Michael also played football at a public school His freshman year, the Tuohy's had nothing to do with Him playing football. Lastly, Oher's talents got Him those scholarship offers, the Tuohy's had nothing to do with that.

White Man's Burden justification.

Gotcha.

What is unfortunate now is that this supposed "feel good" movie/story is now tarnished forever. There is no good outcome from here.

Either 1. Oher is regretting whatever he signed and is trying to extort them for more $ or 2. The Touhys are POS and capitalized on him just as the NCAA initially investigated. Either outcome will not make this story any better. Only worse.

A statement from Tuohy family attorney, Martin Singer:

Anyone with a modicum of common sense can see that the outlandish claims made by Michael Oher about the Tuohy family are hurtful and absurd. The idea that the Tuohys have ever sought to profit off Mr. Oher is not only offensive, it is transparently ridiculous. Through hard work and good fortune, Sean and Leigh Anne have made an extraordinary amount of money in the restaurant business. The notion that a couple worth hundreds of millions of dollars would connive to withhold a few thousand dollars in profit participation payments from anyone – let alone from someone they loved as a son – defies belief.

In reality, the Tuohys opened their home to Mr. Oher, offered him structure, support and, most of all, unconditional love. They have consistently treated him like a son and one of their three children. His response was to threaten them, including saying that he would plant a negative story about them in the press unless they paid him $15 million.

When Michael Lewis, a friend of Sean's since childhood, was approached about turning his book on Mr. Oher and the Tuohys into a movie about their family, his agents negotiated a deal where they received a small advance from the production company and a tiny percentage of net profits. They insisted that any money received be divided equally. And they have made good on that pledge.

The evidence – documented in profit participation checks and studio accounting statements – is clear: over the years, the Tuohys have given Mr. Oher an equal cut of every penny received from The Blind Side. Even recently, when Mr. Oher started to threaten them about what he would do unless they paid him an eight-figure windfall, and, as part of that shakedown effort refused to cash the small profit checks from the Tuohys, they still deposited Mr. Oher's equal share into a trust account they set up for his son.

Additionally, in spite of the false allegation in the lawsuit, the Tuohys have always been upfront about how a conservatorship (from which not one penny was received) was established to assist with Mr. Oher's needs, ranging from getting him health insurance and obtaining a driver's license to helping with college admissions. Should Mr. Oher wish to terminate the conservatorship, either now or at anytime in the future, the Tuohys will never oppose it in any way.

Unbeknownst to the public, Mr. Oher has actually attempted to run this play several times before – but it seems that numerous other lawyers stopped representing him once they saw the evidence and learned the truth. Sadly, Mr. Oher has finally found a willing enabler and filed this ludicrous lawsuit as a cynical attempt to drum up attention in the middle of his latest book tour.

The Tuohys will always care deeply for Mr. Oher. They are heartbroken over these events. They desperately hope that he comes to regret his recent decisions, makes different choices in the future and that they someday can be reconciled with him. In the meantime, however, they will not hesitate to defend their good names, stand up to this shakedown and defeat this offensive lawsuit.
