Miami isn't back, but...

View as article
...Miami is back on track. This thing was about to go off the rails. Mario was at risk of losing the team's trust after the Georgia Tech meltdown. We were staring at three losses in a row with a backup QB against the most dominant ACC program of the decade. The pre-game vibe at the Rock felt like a funeral. Now, it's a whole new season.

- For all his faults, Mario has done two things he promised. First, he's upgraded our trench talent. This is a Clemson team that had our OL doing splits in the backfield a couple years ago. But last night, Miami was overwhelming on both lines. They ran for 211 yards and gave up 31. Sacked Clemson five times and gave up zero. It was a bludgeoning. That type of trench play is a sustainable base for greatness.

The other thing Mario has done is build a physical team. All that tough offseason talk is showing up on Saturdays. Miami needed a yard and got it. Clemson needed a yard and couldn't get it. That's proof of culture.

- Forget building a waterslide in the weight room. If we want to spend money, send a bag of cash to Lance Guidry's house. His 3-3-5 look flustered Clemson's run game. He has now outclassed Bobby Petrino and Garrett Riley.

- I won't lie- I was in the group chat calling for Emory Williams to sit out a series (or more) in favor of Jacurri Brown. He looked like he had no confidence in the first half. But once he saw a couple shots go through the net, he began playing like the guy who impressed the coaches all camp. And when Dawson called a couple shot plays (as @LuCane was calling for), he delivered with catchable deep balls for his WR. Loved his interview on ACCN after the game- he is the definition of a God-fearing, humble kid.

- Yes, we've struck out on five-star DL this year. But we signed a six-star last year. Reuben Bain was throwing people out of the club. Elite play strength and motor. I can't remember any true freshman DL that has ever looked like that at Miami.

- I wanted to highlight Derek Nicholson, the first-year LB coach. That unit is night-and-day from last year and didn't look out of place in comparison to Clemson's elite unit. Francisco Mauigoa and KJ Cloyd were everywhere. Clloyd in particular held up admirably in coverage despite being isolated numerous times. With guys like Chase Smith and Popo Aguirre waiting in the wings, the physical talent is only getting stronger.

- Of course, we need to talk about Corey Flagg. He's a guy who has taken a beating online for things he can't change. But he's worked hard, made plays (21.5 career TFLs) and now has a highlight that will stick with him for the rest of his life.

- James Williams is starting to look like the player everyone envisioned. That torn labrum was real- he is a new player now that he's healthy. On top of his play, he's an emotional leader on this team. He was one of the first guys to find Emory Williams after the game and brings the juice consistently.

- Two guys who have flown a bit under the radar but are having outstanding seasons- Daryl Porter, Jr. and Te'Cory Couch. Porter has been invisible all year (in a good way), while Couch has been a terror on blitzes and sticky in coverage. Give Coach Addae some credit for their development.

- Leonard Taylor responded to last week's no-show with an NFL performance. So did Jared Harrison-Hunte. For two guys who were supposed to be pass-rush specialists, they were stout at the point of attack.

Miami has the soft part of the schedule coming up. But Georgia Tech was supposed to be an easy game, too. This is a huge opportunity to stay focused and reverse the narrative of this season. See you at the UVA game.
Great great recap and commentary. Maybe your best ever, U didn’t miss a thing!

Brashard doesn't dance. And the fact our RBs cant break arm tackles is insane to me. Not one. We desperately need Fletcher and Citizen back.....if he is ok. The best the OL can do is have u not hit in the back field. The rest is your talent. Not seeing it on who we got now
Yea our RBs and TEs are not what I expected coming into the season.

A few points, and I’ll use your mention as an opportunity:

- I like Dawson’s obvious change from what we saw last season. I tip my cap for the TAMU change and the obvious difference in formation and especially route space. I thought his GT plan was bizarrely non-existent and I simply cannot wrap my head around why we’re insisting on keeping a *sometimes* non-threat, Cam, in the slot or otherwise flex’d out.

When it was strictly a wrinkle to move him in motion for our running game, I better understood. Now, I’m non-stop yelling for his spot to be replaced - at least in spurts - by a WR or anyone with some speed to win matchups. I’ve repeated this maybe 250x since GT and its importance is as much threatening and dictating to the defense as it is actual expectation of that output.

- everything I said last night in a group chat we have also applies to TVD. Again, given the above, I have no real issues with Dawson other than when his approach has a heavy Mario flavor to it. The reality is offense dictates a lot in modern football, and I want our program to ‘throw punches’ (be aggressive). I fully understand what Emory Williams looked like and what the ‘let’s keep this close’ plan probably was for last night. I do *NOT* think Williams is ‘ready’ and I’m not a ‘start Williams over TVD’ advocate. In fact, I know we miss TVD (obviously) and I want us to fully play into his strengths, too.

- If/When TVD returns, I beg for at least 25% of our lineups to look like this: (a) Young, George, Restrepo, Ray Ray or Horton, AND Smith. That means MORE of using Smith like the mini, quick-based version of Deebo Samuel. (B) more up tempo on occasion (this part I realize was really out of line last night. (C) more RPO. I don’t know where the RPO has gone in our playcalling, but everyone could benefit from more of it, IMO.

- We should have at least attempted a few vertical shots (like the one Young received and was broken up) once their defense was creeping half of South Carolina into the box. My issue with this was and is broader than Emory. I concede what Mario wants to do. But, if you want to run the ball, you want your OL to have matchup numbers, too, no? I’d like to see us achieve that more and more via formation and personnel grouping.

- Mario seemingly wants to establish an identity of ‘physicality.’ We all know. I’m for it. I wish it’d be broader: an identity of putting the max pressure on defenses and being uncomfortably (to the opponent and anyone watching) aggressive. THROW PUNCHES EARLY AND OFTEN.

I will now just enjoy the victory for a few days.

2 double digit come back wins against 2 of the most talented teams on our schedule (A&M and Clemson. As an underdog no less.) and what should have been a win against GT after a terrible AND unlucky game.

That's 3 times this team and players have shown resilience and toughness we haven't in the past. 3 times they've come together and stood up to adversity and overcome.

We still have a lot of flaws but that kind of character and culture is a very big building block that has been missing for many years. Rising up and overcoming adversity vs folding and falling into a tailspin.

This team and coaching staff is incredibly frustrating to watch. There are so many times every game where I'm just left scratching my head wondering why the f*ck I do this to myself year in, year out.

But as D$ said, there is a base foundation that's been built by Mario that shows up consistently so far this year.
1. The trenches have been solid (and inconsistent but to be expected in year two).
2. This team is tough and fights hard. UNC was ugly but the team played decently hard especially considering TVD was injured.

You hope this is a springboard. Not to playing perfect football because we definitely won't see that this year. But to winning the games we should win (UVA, NC State, BC) and having a good chance against the tougher teams left on the schedule (FSU, LOU of which I think we'll be favored).

QB play will continue to be inconsistent especially if TVD is out for another game or two. We'll probably see some more boneheaded plays by RBs. We'll definitely see more 3rd and long conversions. We'll also see some bad play calls, unnecessary timeouts taken too early in the game followed up by a stupid mistake after the timeout, and WTF moments out of Mario.

But leaning on the trenches and the toughness we've seen so far out of this team and we're all probably looking at going bowling as a ranked team.

Or this team does what Miami teams have done over the last 20 years and lays an egg against 2 of UVA, NC State, BC with losses to FSU and LOU as well. Here's to hoping the moping is behind us.

That OL and defense gives this team a chance to win every week.

This is a totally different team mentality wise.

Actually “dawgs” in the locker room, who hate losing for real.

Now go get a game day consultant Mario, stop trying to F this up for these kids.. who are playing their hearts out.
U showing restraint and that’s good 😂

Someone said, “which team will show up”. This team has showed up the entire season, the real question is which TVD will show up. This team will go where he takes us and if you are a dawg you love that status, pressure and opportunity.

Felt like Dawson hand cuffed Williams first two drives were good then Dawson went away from the run and started playing madden just throwing wide receiver screens but then came back and pounded the rock when we went down 10. Not sure what has happened since early in the season but Dawson playing has gotten worse

Slayed a lot of demons with that win last night.. still have a ways to go but I love how there’s no quit in this team. Shown that all year and wasn’t the case years prior. Mario’s building the right culture.

Something needs to be done about refs, including the replay control room at Charlotte.. it's become blatant cheating.
Mario needs to call them out and pay a fine if it comes to that. There are coaches careers and livelihoods at stake.
We need to have a NIL for calling out these thieves.

We were just...different last night. Everything was different.

and I don't care if Clemson kind of stinks this year...this win was massive for us. We should be 6-1, in the Top 15 right now. Its a shame we aren't and won't be, but I've said all season, this is a good team. We really played like it in all facets. We've waited for this win for a LONG time. It felt good.

Beyond Mario building the lines and physicality, he has made a resilient team. Something every other coach we've had failed to do. This team didn't quit and should have won their clunker against GT. They kept fighting for 60 minutes against UNC even when all was lost. They never stopped fighting against Clemson, which ended up being a 5-round slugfest. Miami just kept swinging and by the end of the fight Clemson looked like Joanna Jedrzejczyk after going five rounds with Weili Zhang. We really kicked their ***. We didn't stop swinging.

Reuben Bain had the best performance I can remember from a freshman at Miami. What he did against Clemson was nothing short of R1 NFL DraftPick performance. Just bully football. Leonard Taylor, too, bully mode all game.

Corey Flagg never ran faster in his life than he did on that final play in 2OT. Was a great moment for the guy.

Emory Williams' second half performance was something else. The one INT at the end of 1H wasn't even his fault (George didn't cross the face of the defender), which is a shame because after halftime, he had a **** near flawless performance for what you were asking of him. Obviously lots of short stuff, but thats the game plan.

Awesome game.

Lets Go Canes.

That was a massive win for Mario, the team and the fans! It was needed in the worst way. Down your starting QB, RB, DE, backup DE and still found a way.

If he would’ve just taken a **** knee this is a 6-1 team. You see the change in culture. Hustle, no quit, psychical at the point of attack. Things we haven’t seen at Miami in a long time.

Mario is still a bonehead with some game day coaching stuff but if he keep recruiting and keep solid coordinators Miami should be just fine.

I’ve been praising Bain in this board for awhile. Glad the rest of the board and nation now know who this kid is. He is the best player in defense as a true freshmen. Mario needs to continue to stack top tier talent like Him. If the high school kids are too dumb or scared to come to Miami then find the talent in the portal. Spend the cash and get players here.

The city is thirsty for the Canes to win. The crowd that showed up while quiet on the outside of the stadium to begin the game, were loud inside and showed passion for the team they want to win so badly. The losers who say Mario needs to be fired after 1 and a half seasons need to go find a bunker to hide in or wake up and support the program. Negativity doesn’t help the situation. Tech was a disaster no way around it but it’s time to move on. The kids have.

Now go beat Virginia and get healthy for NC State.

2 things OP off of what you mentioned, it wasn’t a couple years ago Clemson had our oline doing splits it was just last season. Mario has done a complete turnaround there. I like what you said about instead of spending money on facilities give to Guidry 🙌🏿

Mario should be able to eat in the transfer portal after he shows what he did with Cohen and Lee. We don’t have their replacements on the roster currently I don’t think. Will need to hit the portal for a LT, LG and C. Will be very interesting to see how he pulls the line together for next year. Same for DT and DE

Was pointing out to my wife all night that Young was one on one. I was screaming for us to take some shots. Finally started to do it in the 2nd half. Clearly Dawson doesn’t trust Emory. That late INT throwing to George might explain why. Need to ramp the kid up in case he has to play against Virginia. Clemson was stacking the box and we still ran in them. The WR screens weren’t working so he shouldVe scraped that early on. Why no Brown? Figured he could give us a threat on a few QB runs. Shocked we didn’t see him play last night when the offense was stuck in mud.

When was the last time we saw a dominant performance at the point of attack on both sides?

Probably back in our national championship heyday in 2001-

In my mind Rueben Bain is the best young DL I’ve ever seen at Miami and that includes all the great ones of the past.

Great job by our coaches-Relying on our running game really helped Williams settle in especially in the second half.

Look around the nation it’s hard to win USC another loss they still can’t defend-

1-5 Virginia huge underdog goes into to UNC and shocks them they ran all over UNC -

Mack Brown lost 4 in a row last year maybe this year it will happen again.
