MEGA Miami Fan Attendance -Discussion

Canes are in a Pro town and it's a Pro football team disguising itself as a college team...

If we were National Champs, no one is at that game.
Yup
I remember a #3 ranked Canes team playing a terrible Duke squad at OB. Crowd was really sparse.

Let's see what happens if we get consistently competitive, as that has not been the case since moving to this stadium.

Until we have 5 straight years of serious performance and winning, it's a disingenuous comparison to the OB.

I'm betting that a good product would draw a more consistent crowd at this stadium than it did in the OB.

Winning alone wont bring fans. I seen clips of 2001 and there were 40k v Syracuse
I largely agree about the marketing.
But don’t sell winning short. There’s a delayed reaction, but it’s still the most effective way to raise attendance.
Miami is all about the “events”. Everyone knew the 2001 team was good at the time, but I think only the diehards immediately realized how good.

Then they hammered #15 Syracuse 59-0, in front of about 50k. The following week they played UW, also in the OB, in front of 78k (the last home game).
After winning it all in 2001, the average attendance jumped to 69k in 2002. Then hovered around 60k/game until the wheels fell off a few years later.

Maryland is not exactly packing it in tonight. Do you think anyone on Gameday will mention how bad their fans are?

Stop listening to the agenda. Miami fans are actually great.

Two things can be true at the same time, our fanbase can be terrible and other schools struggle to fill their facilities as well.

The issue with our fanbase, is that stakeholders depend on people that have little to no connection to the University to consistently give a ****. It's a fool's errand and honestly, we need to admit that certain things aren't changing, and we have to win despite it. Keep in mind, there's a significant percentage of our fanbase that doesn't interact with, nor have any relationship to any alumni or students. Compare that to the huge state schools, where there's a good chance that even if you never attended Big State U, you know someone that did.

There's an easy way to predict what the season ticket sales are going to be: Is FSU or UF on the home schedule? If the answer is yes, then expect the number of tickets sold to be significant. Even in your example, Miami played FSU at home in 02. Most people with a semblance of intelligence saw how good Miami was in 2000, and when guys like ER20 came back, it was a safe assumption to make that the team would be **** good, even with a first year HC. I was in high school in Texas, and WE were all like "Miami is going to be crazy this year". The reason why people showed up for UW is 1) UW was a highly ranked team, and 2) it was a revenge game. In other words, highly ranked opponent with LEGIT stakes. That's been the formula for decades at Miami. If the 'Canes are in the hunt, playing a team worth a **** and it's for something, people will show up. If one of those conditions aren't met, expect iffy turnout.

Yes, two things can be true at the same time, but that does not mean they are.

You are largely right though, especially in the Big Ten. Illinois does not fill their stadium week to week, but probably brings in more people than Miami due to the size.

But let's be honest. Someone watched the game, saw the empty stadium and then made a judgment on the entire fanbase based on nothing but their emotions and fan envy that Miami is not Notre Dame. Probably a new Canes fan that thought, for some reason, that Miami is like Nebraska and Ma and Pa are going to get in their camper and come to the game every week rain or shine.

There are a lot of dynamics at play here and I think you are right. A normal Big Ten game is not just a game. There are events and traditions that parents pass down to their kids. The entire campus becomes a fair ground with singing groups, bands playing and almost every student putting on some kind of performance or show before and after the game.

Miami is more like USC and Boston College than any other programs. If we want to make comparisons these are the schools to compare and we are not all that different.

cool GIF

UMs attendance isn’t as bad as people want us to believe. Sure, a Thursday night game against a FCS opponent isn’t going to be a big draw… but overall we aren’t all that bad.

since this keeps coming up, I was curious about the different P5 schools, their campus population, and stadium size.

there are only 5 schools smaller than us. We have a stadium at least 15,000 seats more than all of them. Of the 63 schools, we have the 26th highest seating capacity.

Seriously... even when we were in our heyday throughout the 80's ,early 90's and early 00's... the attendance was always the same... yea they may have been a few more games that looked better in the stands but it's always been like this...
It always puzzled me when people get in a uproar about it
, not saying you just generally speaking....
They make it come across like this is the first time it's ever happened....
Those of us that have been around a long while now have seen this same pattern year after year ....
It's usually the young fans who didn't go to games in the OB during our best years. They don't know any better. This will never change but it can get better. Don't schedule a Buthune scrimmage on a Thursday night.
