Max Buchanan having surgery today

From JAG to irreplaceable, never change CiS

I would typically tuck it up at the tragedy of consistency with you, but both things are true.

1. He was not exactly lighting the world on fire the first few weeks, particularly the Wake game.
2. CMU and the start of the Clemson game was light years better.
3. The god**** backups are not at the level he was playing at the last two games.

we ****ed off the football God of Injuries last year during our run to Natty. Did we not have enough grace while doing it? I never saw an injury list like this after 5 games The season is not half done - at this injury rate - it would look ugly by ACCCG

Regarding Cantwell.....Mario has mentioned several times over the past few weeks that they believe before someone can play Tackle, they need to get their feet wet at Guard first. Essentially experiencing getting blown up by a 3tech and grinding your teeth in there. We saw it with Samson and McCoy last year.
He had no problem moving Jalen Rivers inside to play Markel Bell at LT in 2024.

I have no idea what that first sentence means. Yes, he got better with time and reps. SJ also looked the best he has when he came in vs Clemson. Why don't we let the coaches figure it out before declaring the seasons over?

I can’t recall which podcaster mentioned it, but he said UM is one of the few teams he has seen where the OL doesn’t wear knee braces as a precautionary measure. Has anyone else heard of that ?

If it’s a mild tear and then wanting to treat it conservatively, it can be 4 to 6 weeks.
If they operate and It’s a bad tear itt could be minimum 12 weeks.

I’m pretty sure, if I did the work, I could identify some posters who both called Max a JAG after the first two games and now are proclaiming the season over because he’s been injured.

Well if a JAG is starting then what the heck does that leave on the bench behind him?

Bell had already played several games at tackle while Rivers was out hurt

Something isn’t adding up based on all the off-season hype.

Which means either the kid was never ready and it was just sunshine pumping, or he’s got a nagging injury no one is talking about (highly doubt it).

I mean we’re 5 games in and the kid can’t sniff any spot despite poor play at times + injuries. He just simply isn’t ready, and was never ready. That’s fine - he’s a true freshman at very tough spot for a young kid.

But clearly the staff thought he’d be further along by the time he got to campus, otherwise we would’ve gone portaling for another OL imo.

I agree. Have pointed it out several times but something just doesn't jibe. Kid was here in mid December and by all accounts, was doing pretty well all things considered. spring comes and he was the starting LT. Wasn't an all american but by all accounts was getting good reviews. Then fall camp came and he moved inside and some RT. Games happened and he disappointed and disappeared.

Some kids who are tackles in HS, struggle inside, but I've never quite seen this kind of precipitous drop. Even if they;ve never played guard before, you can see SOME potential. That never happened with Cantwell.

So, that leaves a couple explanations - he was never that good to begin with and the sunshine pumpers were taken for a ride or he's banged up. There could be some doghouse factors but as I said, by all accounts, kid is a nice guy.
Or, he's a freshman. He's not Sisi, who played at IMG. Cantwell played at a small schooll in rural Missouri. In a mostly run offense. He tends to play high & doesnt have the bend Congdon has. He's a tackle and he will be fine.

No matter how many of you scream for Cantwell at guard, you’re not going to get it. He isn’t a guard. He’s a LT. He’s waiting his turn. He will be your starting LT in ‘27.

which is weird because our OL wore braces all of 2024..and even the first half of last season. Its like we decided to scrap it halfway through

I think there’s very little evidence that braces mitigate against injury. Although, Grok tells me that isolated MCL injury was the most common injury in the non-brace group for one of the bigger studies out there.
