Mark Pope’s dismissal from JSU

There's an old adage that you "praise in public and criticize in private"...

He handled this 1000% wrong in my opinion. He could have dismissed him from the team and then held a meeting and said something to the affect of " You all may notice one of your teammates is no longer in here.... and go on from there and explain. The whole he was sending a message is BS you can send messages without doing what he did. Sometimes you make decisions as a coach that may not be the most popular, but thats why your the 'Coach" and "Leader"...

The cameras rolling is BS... could have said shut it off for this and then addressed it later. This doesn't absolve Pope for whatever he did... he still needs to own it all the way.

I'm sure Pope knew the cameras were rolling when he did what he did to get kicked off. That was a lesson in accountability to not only Pope but the whole team. Always think about your actions because there's always consequences. Deion is preparing these young men for the real world. How many professional athletes do we see get arrested and it's blasted all over tv and social media? No one cares about their feelings in the real world, so make better decisions.

LOL. He yanks a kid on camera for self promotion purposes but he's "preparing kids ready for the real world". I'm sure he's really all about teaching Pope a lesson there.

Next time you see a kid, just dump on him because the worlds mean and it's a good learning experience. Just take a dump right on their head.

Re read my post.

People are enabling Pope by feeling bad for a conscious decision he made to join a program led by a self centered con man who films everything.

Pope at 23 should have known if he screwed off this could have happened. People feeling bad for him are enabling his ****** decision making. Don’t join up with a guy who will exploit you.
All that typing to build a strawman. NO ONE FEELS SORRY FOR POPE, NO ONE. People are noting the way he was dismissed, which was foul. You act up, you get booted, but you handle it in a mature way, IE off camera. Deion is who he's always been: an attention *****.

Thats fine if you want to look at it that way. But 99% of that room will never be a pro athlete. Its Jackson St not Alabama. So he can teach life lessons but not turn it into a show. Take a vote with the team, dont allow Pope in the room and when a decision is made go tell him.

I have had to cut guys and I have had players on the team ask me to remove a player. Its always done in my office with the door close. Most get mad and storm out. Some are upset and sit there and we talk. I tell them Ill always be a phone call away because I recruited you and told your parents I would take care of you and I meant that but its a privilege to play in college and you have been given numerous opportunities and did not take advantage of it.

This was a show and Pope may have known the camera's were on and likely though "no way he is kicking me off with them on." But we all see things different ways which is fine.

And next time you see a kid, you coddle him, tell him he can do no wrong, and **** the consequences. Just make sure you put something on his commissary every month when it goes bad.

The players know that since he got to JSU it would be a 24/7 filmed Hard Knocks type of reality show. It's part of his recruitment and how they tell kids that they will help with their brand etc. They are going to show the good and the bad, regardless of if it's a kid getting kicked off the team in a way most disagree with.

This is Bull***t. Plain and simple.
You don't handle business like this without showing your true colors. This is all about show and all about Sanders. You can kick the kid out and have a team meeting, sure but the show for the camera and the public shame is not right no matter how you slice it.

This was gross. I have no problem with a coach dismissing a player. Just like anywhere in life if someone is poisoning the well, they need to be removed.

But this was all a show and the result is embarrassing someone. There's zero need for that. This was all a show for Deion. Many posters here have and a bunch of good suggestions on better ways to handle it with the same effect. I also disagree with the voting aspect. He clearly pushed back against anyone wanting to give the player a chance, which likely impacted some of the "votes". Gross.

I'm not saying you're 100% wrong but there's still things that you're saying that's not relating to my issue lol. It's fine though. We both can agree on what type of person deion is though.
You have issue with how he was dismissed because it was filmed and released to the public and/or because Deion manipulated his players? Or because it was handled in a team setting?

It was a scummy for Deion to film it, something I would have never done. But that’s who Deion is and as I’ve said Pope should have known the risks when he joined the program.

In terms of manipulation…every coach does it. There’s some saying that the most successful teams are the ones where the players think it’s a democracy but it’s really a dictatorship. In the real world it’s messed up, but in a lockeroom it’s a good tactic and something I even do with my players to a certain extent.

Yes, definitely agree on the person Deion is.

Legit go look at the first 3 pages of this thread.

Deion can’t be expected to handle things in a mature/private way because that’s not who he is. Pope should have known that and that’s why I don’t feel bad for him

The way it was handled was wrong for multiple reasons. It should not have been public. Players and coaches should have voted anonymously after a detail discussion of the infractions. Lastly Pope should not have been present during the vote. Seems to me that Deion likes the camera too much and nothing is off limits. He came across as self-righteous.

You can be tough on a kid without live streaming yourself dumping on them for wreck

Agreed. Had this been Saban blowing a fuse and kicking him off the team in a rage, no one would be complaining because that's who Saban is. This criticism stems from the hate of Deion, not from concern about Mark Pope.

I might have missed it in the clip (or maybe there is more on the show that wasnt in the clip), but do they ever say what he did? Or at least indicate if his teammates know what he did? Or for that matter even knew who he was talking about when he asked them to vote? I lean towards the team knowing who it was and what he did since all of the players in red (assuming offense) voted for him to stay those in blue (assuming defense) voted for him to go.

Also, assuming the offense/defense split was red/blue with the voting being so split between them, I would think twice before kicking him off when the entire offense wanted him back as it seems that would just create division between them. But, I don't know what he did and as others have noted, Deion seemed to have his mind made up prior to the vote.

This was also a message. I tell you this much, soft dudes aren’t going to go play for him. Only thick skinned savages need be apply. When a coach announces something good like a walk-on getting a scholarship in front of the room and cameras, everyone is for that but when someone obviously did something to embarrass the program or hurt it in some way, we want to protect them and shield them from the consequences of public embarrassment.

You’re spot on with Offense wearing Red and Defense wearing Blue. At the VERY start of the clip Deion mentions that he heard the player talking like he didn’t want to be a part of the “family”, he also mentioned it was cancerous to the family and it’s not his first offense.

While the optics seemed like a rough dismissal, if Pope truly was a bad vibe that was spreading through the lockerroom, I get why Deion dismissed him in front of everyone to send a message and make sure that whatever was being spread dies out.
