Richt did the same thing. Lol. That’s y we said it was eery how similar Richt & Smart’s career paralleled.
Yr 1:
Richt (8-4) v. Smart (8-5)
Yr 2:
Richt (13-1 winning SEC*) v. Smart (13-2 winning SEC)
*there was no CFP in 2001
Yr 3:
Richt (11-3 winning SECE) v. Smart (11-3 winning SECE)
Yr 4:
Richt (10-2) vs. Smart (12-2 winning SECE)
Yr 5:
Richt (10-3 winning SEC) v. Smart (8-2)
In 5 yrs:
Richt (52-13 w/ 3 SECE titles & 2 SEC titles)
Smart (52-14 w/ 3 SECE titles & SEC title)
The difference? Yr 6. Smart finally won it all.
All I’m saying is like Richt, Smart, Aranda, Mario (at a P5 program), etc is that they didn’t have shining glowing seasons yr 1. Ya’ll see Smart today, but don’t remember all the chit that was talked by UGA fans who “missed” Richt during Smart’s 1st yr. Chit takes time, period. I stand by my theories which are historically proven:
1. Never hire a coach from a failed regime b/c the likelihood of them succeeding is less than 10%
2. Give a coach 2 yrs, 3 yrs max, when inheriting a dumpster fire
