Mario Cristobal...you're now (REALLY) on the clock...

Jesus Christ; this board becomes overtly emotional & offended way too often, at times.

U’re not getting the gist & drift of @k9cane post. No one thinks of Miami basketball when mentioning this University. Just like no sane person would consider UF a b-ball power despite winning back to back b-ball Nat’l titles or Michigan as a b-ball power despite winning a Nat’l title & having the famed Fab 5.

The point that’s been made is that Miami is a football power, and also a baseball power, yet it’s the least talked about program that’s been having the most success since joining the ACC, & certainly this side of 2010. THAT’S A F’ing problem!

The difference between UF winning back to back Nat’l titles vs. Miami going to the Final 4 this season is that UF’s FB program won a Nat’l Championship in one of those seasons, & won another title shortly after the 2nd . So the narrative was UF had a top tier ATHLETIC PROGRAM. The difference between UofM winning a b-ball Nat’l title in the 80’s & having the spot light on the Fab 5 in the 90’s was UofM FB was winning their conference, playing in Rose Bowls, & shortly after the Fab5 winning a Nat’l themselves; so the narrative was they had a top tier ATHLETIC PROGRAM.

The point Steve is making is that when u look at the resources & support behind Coach L vs. the football team it’s literally night & day; yet, it’s Coach L that has done way more w/ less than his peers on the football side. In true reality Miami is not a b-ball school, but it’s the b-ball program that’s been heads & shoulders above the other, more known programs. W/ the resources allocated towards Mario to return Miami back to FB lore, yeah there’s going to be some pressure imposed whether the loyalist fan wants to admit or not.

Not to nitpick what you're saying but the Fab5 never won a natty. Played for it but that's it, iirc.

as someone who is apathetic towards anything other than Miami football and boxing, it pains me to say it, but UM is currently a 'basketball school' Something I thought I would never, ever, ever utter. But it is what it is

And with that, Cristobal.... it's on you. The grace period is over.

With that said, as someone who long ago did have an interest in the basketball program (I strongly believed Steve Frazier was going to be our first Big East star, Ochiel Swaby, Constantine Popa, Tim James, Steven Edwards and was heart broken when Leonard Hamilton left the program) Im happy for all of you guys who are alums and/or fans of the hoops team. That watched from the days of Tito Horford and Kevin Presto, and attended games at the Knight Center, I am happy for U guys.

And yeah, a rising tide lifts all vessels. The football program has some real pressure on them to hold up their end of the bargain. They truly were the genesis of 'the U' as we know it, and made it a national brand. Now, they have to live up to what they have built

The Miami Hurricanes are in the Final Four. Words I never thought I'd type out. I just might actually watch this Saturday.

You really havent been watching these games?

and that is actually a good thing. Was thinking the rise of the basketball program will put the pressure on football and baseball too. Both the latter programs have been on the slide...football obviously a lot longer.

UM basketball is coming off a trip to the Elite 8 with a better roster than last season (Wong and Miller are better), and UM added transfers Omier and Pack. Just two seasons ago, UM fans wanted Laranaga fired after three straight losing seasons.

Y'all expecting a complete turn around year two with a roster being overhauled? Sheesh be patient. I mean next season we could lose 3-6 games dead ***. Just because the basketball is doing good doesn't put MC on the clock. BBall took what 12 years? And probably still not a power in bball after this run. I want a consistent power in football but I know u have to change thee while roster with HS studs at least for three to four classes. That 22 class I don't really count as his first class. This one was his first now let's see how his eye for talent performs. That's what I'm looking for next season.

Getting to the portal for Happy Hour instead of the midnight menu would help…
U can't pluck jags from the portal that's the problem. People think just cause a guy started 3 seasons somewhere else they will do well here. Most of the time transfers are just fillers, the portal doesn't solve all problems. Recruit HS elites get rolling eventually then pick up stars that transfer.

I agree on building through strong high school recruiting, but there are also legit players transferring every year… there needs to be a balance…

I agree in a sense, but Mario wants to build through HS ranks first and foremost which is where most of our NIL is going imo. Gotta just land on difference makers through the portal which has been hit or miss thus far under Mario

Obviously, Miami is not known as a basketball school. The program was even cancelled in 1971 and revived in 1985.

As far as sports resources are concerned AT Miami, it’s obvious basketball doesn’t require the same amount of $$$ as the football program for many reasons, most notably the number of players on a team. There’s also many more variables with football than BB.

As far as Ruiz is concerned, comparatively speaking, he did strike substantial NIL deals with a couple of the BB players.

It’s inevitable that the BB programs recent success will have some asking why we’re not seeing the same with football. We’re in year 2 of the Mario era in a sport that requires much more resources with a tremendous amount of variables not seen in other sports.

hold on, who's Larranga?

Isn't Bill Foster still the coach?!?!

This is a point I want to see the debate for.

It's not an apples to apples comparison between a competent basketball program and a competent football program. Until Dec of 2021, the financial part for football was not there.

In comparison, it's much easier to field a competitive basketball team that can make it deep into March Madness than it is to do the same with a football team. It's just a number game. You're talking the difference between a new startup shifting its business model vs an established, huge corporation (IBM as a random example) to shift its business model. It's a matter of scale.

It is exponentially easier (not that it is "easy") for a decent to good coach like Coach L (who is also in his 12th year here) to succeed than for a decent to good coach to succeed in football. It takes substantially more resources to succeed in football vs basketball and I would argue an even better coach that can manage not only being a really good coach but a good CEO as well.

@k9cane you're a great poster and give more back to the university than 99.9% of the rest of us on the boards. So I realize you have a legit reason to be impatient. But respectfully I expected you to be more rational about the situation. First, Larranga has been with Miami for over a decade vs Mario for 14-15 months. Second, it's a lot easier to turn around a roster of 13 scholarship players vs 85.

Fans expecting 10 wins in 2023 and playoffs in 2024 are wishful thinkers. Mario is not a Lincoln Riley or a Lane Kiffin type coach. He's a brick by brick guy. At the minimum, he needs three years of his classes to start delivering real results. I'm expecting very little this year (2023), "something" next season (2024) and being in the conversation in 3 years in 2025.

Feel free to call me a homer or too patient or whatever. But I'm just being realistic about the coach we hired. He'll get us there, just not on the rabid fan timeline.

I don't believe in balance I believe in what this guy says

Balance is 50-50....I know u don't mean 50/50 though. It has to get to a point where it's 90% HS studs and plucking a few guys. That's when u click on all cylinders. U can't have an off season or every off season getting 10 transfers. That's bad asf, if u want to become a machine that recipe ain't it. It means your UF and your missing on everyone. The reason we are going through that is cause one class can't fix all. Our classes have been *** and MC knows it. This is why I'm patient because this man knows the problem and he's going out and addressing them slowly.
