During Mario Cristobal's Monday press conference he provided an injury update on Miami Hurricanes defensive back OJ Frederique, after playing two snaps against the Stanford Cardinal.

According to Cristobal, Frederqiue will be out for quite some time: [It's a] pretty significant injury, so he'll be down for quite a while." Cristobal did not provided a time table for when Frederique will be back.

Coming into the 2026–27 college football season, Frederique was considered the focal point of the Hurricanes' secondary. The Hurricanes next couple of games are tune-up games before they travel to Clemson. So, hopefully he gets to feeling better before the team travel in a tough environment.

This past season, Frederique played a huge role in the Hurricanes' secondary, recording a total of 19 tackles and seven pass deflections. He blew up his freshman season, totaling for 27 tackles and one interception.

Due to the injury, junior defensive back Damari Brown was inserted into the game to replace Frederqiue. This is a huge blow for the Hurricanes secondary. Now, it is time to see what player steps up in his spot.

The Hurricanes will kick off against the FAMU Rattlers this Thursday inside Hard Rock Stadium.

If Mensah, Toney or multiple starters at a particular positional group are not available, and
opposing coaches would know, it wouldn't affect their approach to the game?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but when Stephen Daly blew his leg out celebrating the Big 10 championship game, I’m fairly sure they pretty immediately said what he did and he was out for the year. Remind me how much that changed their fortunes?

I think you're conflating multiple issues.
Mario and his ACC colleagues have become more transparent about injuries because of conference rules.
I am betting if it wasn't for that rule, they would not disclose injuries and why should they?
We are fans, we will (should) be rooting for our team regardless of who shows up on gameday.
An injured player, or group of them, not being available is important information.
Those players don't have to be NFL caliber.
They are still starters and if they are not playing, other players presumably not as good will be
on the field.
This can affect your game planning and what you practice during the week.

 

Might be time to move on from OJ at the end of the season, it's seems to be every year with him now. He's a very talented player but he just cannot stay healthy. I believe this is 3 injuries in the last year

Maybe Dunnigan can play corner some until Frederique comes back. Especially if Lucas is also hurt. Dunnigan is a future star.

Demari is a low bar. I understand OJ's potential but part of being a great or even a good player is availability. And, OJ unfortunately is often unavailable.

 

If our DBs are O'Connor and Lucas, I think that's a better duo than Lucas and OJ.

 

70% of you on this board are absolutely insufferable. Acting like it’s the end of the world that we’re down guys in the DB room. Somehow now our schedule is a gauntlet according to some here and now “nothing can be taken for granted.”

Nothing was being taken for granted to begin with, get a grip. We have an O that’s gonna put monster numbers and points on teams. And our D will be fine. Not elite hut they don’t need to be right now.

Sure it's not ideal and it sucks but it's not as bad as people are trying to say. Lucas will be fine and so will O'Connor. Heard O'Connor had the flu so he should be good going forward. When we go to Wake Forest we will have Lucas, O'Connor and Brown plus the young kids.

 

We had the #1 offense in the country in 2024 and lost 3 games. Posters underestimate our schedule every season for 2 decades. I don't think it is unreasonable for posters to discuss the injuries to our secondary without catching **** for it.

It’s not underestimating our schedule to point out our O and D (even with injuries) are in better places. We lost ISU because cam played one half. We lost Syracuse because our D **** the bed. GT because our O had one bad game all year. And again, both sides of the ball are better now than they were then, even accounting for injuries. I’m giving people on here **** for it because they’re ****ing their pants about injuries and it’s the same mopery at the first sign of trouble. Next man up.

Means… he will never play again and is now an amputee.
