Manny will call Plays in 2021, Jess Back as DL Coach

Well he did get stripped of playcalling duties. So that's something, at least.
people have to stop focusing on titles. focus on what they're doing now. baker is just sitting out the end of his deal as a water boy. Manny publicly demoted him. id rather a new DC but were here so lets see if it works. if not, they'll be gone. as cribby has said -- win win

I guess Baker is a meeting room and coaching savant that just can't call plays on game days.

Uh huh.

The best news in all this is: if it doesn't work, hopefully it's not just Diaz's head in the noose, but Flake James dangling right beside him.

Manny doesn't want to be a CEO. Won't succeed here. Simpson had no other options than to come to Miami, even though he is a good technical coach, he doesn't recruit. Not a single defensive coach was let go, tough to be a fan of this program with this continuous lack of any foresight. When Manny goes, Blake James needs to as well, he has not had a single hire "outside" the program since he has been here. Athletic Department is a laughing stock.

I don't disagree with a lot of you guys, but everyone keeps talking about bama.

We were going to get killed with no matter the coaching staff. Period. Everybody quit talking about bama for christ sake.

Let's say Diaz had gone to Temple as HC but it wasn't going well. Richt had hired Baker, but was in the market was a DC, and he had to choose to between Strong, Muschamp, Steele, and Diaz. I don't think we'd be upset at Diaz returning as DC because I think he'd be the best of those names; most of us would say the defense looked really good when he was calling plays and it wouldn't require a massive change in scheme.

It's not so much that Diaz is calling plays now, I just don't know if he can handle that along with HC responsibilities.

I actually don't understand it. If he wanted to put a band aid on, do it on the cheap, and not fire all his buddies there was a pretty easy way to do it very similar to what we have now, but significantly better at recruiting.

1. Gotta fire baker, no way around it. No point in a 500k+ DC that doesn't call plays.
2. Move Patke to LBs. He did good with the strikers, give him a shot.
3. Promote Telly to special teams coach.

It's a similar level staff, but with better recruiting.

This is almost as lazy as Richt promoting Banda and Patke when Manny bolted for Temple. I am utterly shocked. This is so inept that it is hard to fathom.

The only explanation is that Manny struck out in every target that he tried with (and it shows how limited his Rolodex is which is why we are in this position to begin with).

I used to feel that if we only had a solid OC, we would dominate as our defense was able to lock down when it mattered. That is no longer the case. We do not have the LBs to compete and will be getting worked. I thought that Baker could not come back, and Manny has hitched his ride to his future undoing.

Based upon this, when this turns into failure, Manny needs to go! He may not last the year. I had high hopes for a transformation, and we get this shiite instead. What a disappointment! Hopefully some up and coming coach sees the talent being build and can sweep in to save the day...or Lashlee has a Rolodex of good DCs as we are so lazy as an administration that he could sweep into the HC position when Manny burns down the house next year.

The head scratcher is how is Rumph being retained for a role in the recruiting department? I hope it's something like making sure there is a fresh pot of coffee brewing and going to pick up the mail.

I'm constantly being let down by Diaz's decisions, but it sounds like folks think that the Rumph move was just to give him a chance to save face and apply for jobs elsewhere. Couldn't the same be said for Baker? Diaz isn't doing what we hoped and taking them out behind the barn to put them out of their misery, but he expects that they will both move on.

It is an awful blemish on Baker's career to get stripped of playcalling, so if he wants to continue his college coaching career, he should go to another team to call plays. Otherwise he's going to be relegated to being a mediocre position coach for the rest of his career.
The coaching business doesn’t really work like that, Diaz doesn’t have to move Mountains in order to ensure his friends have jobs. As we all know, there are literally hundreds of coaches who change jobs in the offseason every year, other coaches & programs know who all these guys are, they don’t need to be protected in order to get another job, if they present something of value to another coach, that coach will reach out to them either directly or to their agent & offer them a job.

If Diaz believes that neither Baker or Rumph or Patke for that matter wouldn’t be able to get another job unless he went all out to make them look good then that just means they’re not qualified for their job in the first place.

Baker has coached at Texas, Ark State & LA Tech before he came to Miami, he’s not an unknown coach, if he got fired from Miami he could easily get a job somewhere else, but there’s literally hundreds of jobs available every year, Diaz is not protecting him by keeping him on staff to get a job elsewhere, he simply doesn’t wanna fire him because his ego won’t allow him to move on from his disciples.

Rumph was a CB’s coach at Miami for 5 years, along with 8 years of NFL playing experience, he’s from South FL & coaches a position that is one of the most highly sought after prospect pools in the recruiting world, the South FL Cornerback. If he were good at his job, regardless of how he performed during his tenure at Miami he could very easily get a job at hundreds of other schools who all recruit & covet South FL CB’s. Paul Williams for God sakes is CB’s coach at Wake Forest & he was horrendous at Miami. The point I’m making is, Rumph should easily be able get a job coaching at a bunch of programs if he were actually any good at it.

Overall, this all just shows that Diaz is in over his head & doesn’t really have a full grasp of what he’s doing.
He’s trying to create a coaching tree, without none of the leaves ever falling & none of the fruits actually producing lol.

He’ll be the first coach ever to have a Coaching tree where none of his coaches ever go anywhere else lol.

So he’s on the payroll to do “nothing??” Then if that’s the case, between us paying $4m to get Diaz from Temple, throwing $1m at Dan Penos, giving a pay raise to DVD, and paying Rumph $$ to stay on staff to do nothing....I don’t wanna hear about us being broke again. We throwing blue bands in the fire at will. Lol

Also DC money to Blake so Manny can call plays.
You can't make this **** up. I'm upset at myself for believing after T-Rob was hired that we were really about to do something here.

look I agree in that id rather Manny be an HC and a DC be a DC but the DC hire didn't work out (in terms of this is worst case scenario) and at least we know who to blame this year if the D isnt up to the Diaz standard at Miami (as much as we don't like Diaz in some aspects, his defenses were good here and no one can say otherwise).
