Manny will call Plays in 2021, Jess Back as DL Coach

This is almost as lazy as Richt promoting Banda and Patke when Manny bolted for Temple. I am utterly shocked. This is so inept that it is hard to fathom.

The only explanation is that Manny struck out in every target that he tried with (and it shows how limited his Rolodex is which is why we are in this position to begin with).

I used to feel that if we only had a solid OC, we would dominate as our defense was able to lock down when it mattered. That is no longer the case. We do not have the LBs to compete and will be getting worked. I thought that Baker could not come back, and Manny has hitched his ride to his future undoing.

Based upon this, when this turns into failure, Manny needs to go! He may not last the year. I had high hopes for a transformation, and we get this shiite instead. What a disappointment! Hopefully some up and coming coach sees the talent being build and can sweep in to save the day...or Lashlee has a Rolodex of good DCs as we are so lazy as an administration that he could sweep into the HC position when Manny burns down the house next year.

the diff is richt was gonna let Banda call plays. this is Manny calling plays again.

he isnt the DC anymore. hes just collecting a wasted check bc the school didn't want to pay him to leave w a year left on his deal. Manny publicly demoted him.

Yeah Diaz just publicly humiliated his DC. Baker should be embarrassed for sticking around. It's a double humiliation because if he is on the staff at the start of the 2021 season, it not only means he was so bad at DC he got stripped of playcalling but also that no other team wanted him.

Diaz might as well have announced that he is also giving Baker a shoe-shining kit as a retention bonus.

Well we are not bama. Coaching spots are limeted by the ncaa and we dont have 50 "analysts" to cover for a wasted spot.
We can't afford that. Every coaching spot has to produce for us. Can't waste them on buddy's he doesn't want to fire so the can collect checks for a year. We are acting like we have unlimited coaching spots to give.

we have a. new DC. Manny is essentially the DC now. stop focusing on titles and focus on what actually happened. titles are meaningless. I would've loved a new DC, but Manny as a DC is better than Blake.
titles aren't meaningless when Baker is collecting a big paycheck to do essentially analyst work.

I'm no insider so can't say. But many have said he vocally wanted several guys who are balling out a mid level power 5 squads.

Idk.

Moral of the story, I don't love all these moves. I also don't hate them. Kind of meh. Takes some balls to put all the pressure on himself. Let's see how it works out

Yeah; I’m in the same boat. Let it play out. I’m trying to be more positive in 2021. Don’t understand some things, but it may work out....but.....if it don’t! Sheesh. Lol

i mean, really, the problem here isn't manny calling the plays. that wouldn't have been my first choice, but i'm pretty confident it will be a clear upgrade. the problem is keeping baker on staff to do absolutely nothing. what does the man even do here? he doesn't recruit. he doesn't scheme well. he sure doesn't coach the LBs well. now he doesn't even call plays.

Wait so rumph and dvd swapped roles lol ??
Thats the funniest take of all.... So the guy who supposedly can coach but cant recruit goes to an off field recruiting role. The guy with no experience but is a **** of a recruiter swaps with him to on field coaching role. Umm.....

Rumph staying on feels political. Makes about as much sense as keeping a demoted DC who doesn’t call plays.

Have you considered the possibility that Manny saved the program tens of hundreds of dollars in unemployment compensation? WELL HAVE YOU?! Manny is playing 8D chess here. He has ALL the angles covered.

Exactly. Most of those titles are window dressing to justify the salary.

Baker keeps the DC title on paper but essentially is a position coach. Manny wasn't going to cut him loose or publicly humiliate him. Keeping that title may also help him find another job....

Simpson is now the Assistant HC as well as DL. Helps give him a decent salary and hopefully, more input in defensive game plans.

TRob will coach the entire secondary and DVD will learn from him. DVD gets a title, bigger salary and the ability to go out of the office to recruit.
Hopefully TRob also gets some input into the game plan.

Patke is along for the ride

Rumph is keeping a job adn paycheck until something pops for him elsewhere. Clearly Ed and maybe other alumni looking out for him. I doubt he's going to actually do much "recruiting".

Manny put all his chips on himself. I am hoping that whatever "tweaks" they put into the defense will be enough......
I completely agree with all these points. Overall there is a feel of politicking with the moves, I'll try to rationalize them to make me feel better.

I wanted Baker to be let go the most so this is the #1 disappointment for me. I get the same feeling that Manny didn't want to fire him for emotional reasons, one of them being Baker has a newborn (I think?) child and he couldn't bring himself to put his buddy out on the street during a pandemic. This is clearly a demotion and I hope Baker is aware that the next step is being fired. Or maybe this ticks him off and makes him look for another role on his own (🙏). Either way, his gameday routine stays the same - stand around and do nothing.

I don't know enough about Simpson's recruiting ability but he seems to be well regarded as a teacher? We need the young ends to make jumps. Maybe Stroud still helps to recruit? You can sell his NFL experience, but this '22 class is so stacked, we need to really handle DL recruiting.

I have the same feeling as many others in that TRob will manage the entire secondary and DVD is essentially his assistant. I'm guessing DVD has some legit relationships with recruits built over the last few years that Manny did not want to sever and as great a reputation as TRob has on the trail, he would be years behind DVD in getting to know some of the targets. The '22 safety class is terrific and the CB group looks solid, so it will be vicious and we need all the recruiting ability in the secondary we can get.

Patke is the embodiment of the shrug emoji. Jose and Lou were older, developed guys by the time they got here, but still, one was awarded best kicker in the nation and the other a finalist for best punter. Ideally he becomes just S/T coach, but without a new DC/scheme change I didn't expect him to lose his striker role.

I think the Rumph move was purely politics. Manny couldn't keep all his buddies and fire the only alum, that would have been a bad look to former players (Ed Reed, etc.). He replaced an alum with another one, maybe thinking about appeasing some people. The coaching carousel is in full swing, might be more openings (NFL) soon, so who knows maybe Rumph still leaves. Another way to think about it, maybe the move is more to help Rumph then it is to necessarily help the team. "Hey we know your recruiting sucks, why not spend all your time in that department and focus 100% on improving, take a break from coaching. You can look for another job next season."
