Exactly. Most of those titles are window dressing to justify the salary.
Baker keeps the DC title on paper but essentially is a position coach. Manny wasn't going to cut him loose or publicly humiliate him. Keeping that title may also help him find another job....
Simpson is now the Assistant HC as well as DL. Helps give him a decent salary and hopefully, more input in defensive game plans.
TRob will coach the entire secondary and DVD will learn from him. DVD gets a title, bigger salary and the ability to go out of the office to recruit.
Hopefully TRob also gets some input into the game plan.
Patke is along for the ride
Rumph is keeping a job adn paycheck until something pops for him elsewhere. Clearly Ed and maybe other alumni looking out for him. I doubt he's going to actually do much "recruiting".
Manny put all his chips on himself. I am hoping that whatever "tweaks" they put into the defense will be enough......
I completely agree with all these points. Overall there is a feel of politicking with the moves, I'll try to rationalize them to make me feel better.
I wanted Baker to be let go the most so this is the #1 disappointment for me. I get the same feeling that Manny didn't want to fire him for emotional reasons, one of them being Baker has a newborn (I think?) child and he couldn't bring himself to put his buddy out on the street during a pandemic. This is clearly a demotion and I hope Baker is aware that the next step is being fired. Or maybe this ticks him off and makes him look for another role on his own (

). Either way, his gameday routine stays the same - stand around and do nothing.
I don't know enough about Simpson's recruiting ability but he seems to be well regarded as a teacher? We need the young ends to make jumps. Maybe Stroud still helps to recruit? You can sell his NFL experience, but this '22 class is so stacked, we need to really handle DL recruiting.
I have the same feeling as many others in that TRob will manage the entire secondary and DVD is essentially his assistant. I'm guessing DVD has some legit relationships with recruits built over the last few years that Manny did not want to sever and as great a reputation as TRob has on the trail, he would be years behind DVD in getting to know some of the targets. The '22 safety class is terrific and the CB group looks solid, so it will be vicious and we need all the recruiting ability in the secondary we can get.
Patke is the embodiment of the shrug emoji. Jose and Lou were older, developed guys by the time they got here, but still, one was awarded best kicker in the nation and the other a finalist for best punter. Ideally he becomes just S/T coach, but without a new DC/scheme change I didn't expect him to lose his striker role.
I think the Rumph move was purely politics. Manny couldn't keep all his buddies and fire the only alum, that would have been a bad look to former players (Ed Reed, etc.). He replaced an alum with another one, maybe thinking about appeasing some people. The coaching carousel is in full swing, might be more openings (NFL) soon, so who knows maybe Rumph still leaves. Another way to think about it, maybe the move is more to help Rumph then it is to necessarily help the team. "Hey we know your recruiting sucks, why not spend all your time in that department and focus 100% on improving, take a break from coaching. You can look for another job next season."
