Lu, D$ what's the word?

People need to keep check with reality here.

These are not the same circumstances as the Shannon situation. So expecting the same timetable is going to lead to a lot of heartache.

1. Shannon did not have this kind of buyout and this much left on his contract.
2. Shalala was not stepping down and the University was not without a clear head at that time. This is probably the single Biggest issue right now. She's not going to pull the trigger as she's stepping down, and a new guy is not going to walk in and make his first major decision be firing a football coach. The timing of this almost ensures that this situation continues.
3. The media is still talking about the "cloud" and the NCAA mess. This seems to have bought Golden more time and excuses then Shannon had. It was just last week that Herbstreit and a lot of media talking heads were bashing the "Banner" fans and defending Golden.

As bad as things now stand, the powers that matter don't seem to be focused on the issue at all, and its not likely they are going to act to remedy it this year.

I think people need to expect the worst, and hope for the best. But the reality is that there is probably NO help coming. Not this year. It is what it is.
i keep saying that, but no one wants to listen. shapiro will buy al leeway, whether you think it's warranted or not, it just will ..maybe it just buys him one extra year.. but i think they will give it to him. People keep bringing up the shannon golden race thing, completely ignoring the circumstances of the program when they both arrived.

Hate to be a bearer of bad news or reality checking this moanfest but most likely this is a six year turnaround job so I don't think Golden is going anywhere this year. Everyone thinks that a 4 year turnaround is what coaches should be judged by but that is extremely rare. It took Butch 6 years to get UM back into National relevance. Just a little reality check to avoid the heartbreak of at least another year of Golden.

Different situation in that the full brunt of sanctions hit Miami in year 3 and Butch went 5-6 in 1997. Miami finished 9-3 in 1998. I think the fact that Miami finished strong and competed against FSU in 1999 set the stage for 2000.

the "Shapiro thing" that F/A/G used to extort the university? that thing? the "thing" that turned out to be completely meaningless with virtually ZERO actual sanctions? there is only the intangible "cloud" effect on recruiting for a couple of years.

it shouldnt buy him **** other than a ticket back to NJ

If F.A.G is not fired I will not watch any games next year...first time in 30+ years that I will deliberately not watch any Miami games. **** I hate that ************!!!!!

The details of each situation might be difference but the overall picture is the same. You can't make excuses for Butch then dismiss the excuses for Golden. They both had NCAA cloud/sanctions to deal with.

Perhaps evaluating Al on the "overall situation" as it related to Butch Davis is not the correct way to look at it. Certainly there should be benchmarks along the way that can used for evaluating, yes? Butch seemed to meet those benchmarks by:

1) Improving his record year over year.

2) Making a critical change at D coordinator when it was needed.

I have not seen those benchmarks achieved by golden.

Every coach who has won or competed for a title in the BCS era has shown MAJOR signs of progress within 4 years and most within 2 years of taking over. We know what we have in Golden, and it is not enough to compete (let alone win) at this level. Whenever you know that a coach is not a long term answer you have an obligation to go ahead and move on. LAME DUCK COACHES NEVER WORK. The systemic disadvantages they face from EVERYONE knowing they are done is just to great to facilitate the development of a guy that is by definition not yet good enough.

He's here until next year. Just accept it. Makes the losing nominally more tolerable.

All coaches enter a program under some sort of difficult circumstances when their predecessor was fired. Golden inherited better talent than what Randy did. Golden had the NCAA issue, Randy had a program that had some off the field issues. Randy had the Orange Bowl tore down during his tenure. It's not like Randy came in after Butch Davis and destroyed the program a la Coker. He inherited a mess just like Golden did, but neither should have been or be absolved for those circumstances. 4 years is more than enough time to turn things around and at minimum win the Coastal.

My prediction is a lot of negs for this post.

So how about SC. Sanctions around the same time are worse, but still performing better than Albatross. Corch Golden has way less scholarship reductions that Butch right?

Butch got his players in through other schollies, like Santana Moss on track.

I'm actively rooting for your death.

Not D Money or Lu but...

@MiamiRadioBeast: In communicating with someone very close to the situation..it would seem unless circumstances change drastically...Al will be here next year

The one thing I'll disagree here is Randy was part of the Coker regime so he was part of the original mess. He had no business firing Hargreaves in 2005. That was a **** good defense that year. Then he ran off John Palermo. That was an excellent defensive front between Brown and Campbell. I really like Randy as a defensive coordinator but he has to get a lot of the blame for the team he inherited was the one he helped build.

Al inherited a mess and got stuck with a 2-year investigation. But we're still making the mental errors that we made under Randy and we're still undisciplined. The turnover of players is too high. We're getting outcoached in the second half consistently. That's enough to say we need to move in a new direction.

That and he invented the "gray" shirt concept.

It might have been a turn around and rebuild, but by year 4 you shouldn't continue to see issues that were present in year 1. The coaching is problem number 1 whch means there should be a change.

lol people act like Shannon didn't sign a contract extension merely months before getting fired, yet they keep harping on a contract extension that was signed freaking 3 years ago smh. Did people forget that Larry signed a 5 year contract extension that made him one of the highest paid coaches in college football at the time a little more than a year before he was fired. Also why do people keep acting like a huge buyout if he fails is what AL and his agent wanted most in a contract he signed when he was still smelling his own **** and thinking he could win here. If anything the biggest thing Al and his agent wanted was a get out of jail free card, if the school got hit hard from sanctions he could leave easily without any real monetary penalty or if his real dream job came a knocking he didn't have a huge buyout hurdle in the way. Guys going into a contract extension that early into their tenure don't think "man I suck *** get me as much money as you can when these rubes find out how bad I am and fire me." Typically large buyouts for getting fired correlate with large buyouts for a coach leaving to go somewhere else. If someone knows of a coach that had a measly buyout for leaving but a large payout if they were fired let me know because I can't think of any. The guy isn't that self aware to have been thinking he was a failure of epic proportions less than a year on the job and before he even completed his first cycle trying to recruit in sfl that he was thinking he would be fired for being a **** coach and needed to worry about that scenario more than trying to get away w/o penalty when a better job came knocking or if the NCAA dropped the hammer on Miami.

Also Al and the the school could very well work out a "mutual parting" type deal where he just resigns due to outside reasons and so he can save face. He still has some luster nationally (although it's very little) and he clearly has the gift of gab to where he could get another gig maybe not immediately but atleast within a year or two. Especially if a new hire comes in and starts winning w/in first two years Al will get the old (he left a lot of talent for the new coaches tag). Anyone who doesn't think so doesn't pay attention to all the re-threads that constantly get coaching jobs. If he's still here next year it's because the people that make the decision still want him here (he's a likable guy if you can look past his failures on Sat) not because of money.

Not an insider but from someone that is on the sidelines each week. He says 100% that Golden is here next year. TIFWIW
