Strongly disagree.

Getting a top-rated local DT is nice. But there are far more top-rated DTs around the country.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with Miami as a DT school. We have 2 in the HOF and Wilfork will be the third. And Brown may have had a chance to be the fourth. And we've had others who produced well in the pros, too.

Get the job done.

Of course you want another one ideally, but I don’t see them adding an instant impact DT from now to signing day other than Silvera.

Wimp womp womp! Kool has to do better than 1 elite DT per class.

Setting our expectations pretty high aren't we. There's less then 10 elite DTs in the country each year and you expect to get 2 of them. I think you're throwing around elite too loosely. We would be sitting pretty good if we get 1 elite each year (5*) combined with someone who is merely good/very good (4*) that didn't have to play as a freshman.

Who's talking about a local DT. Nationwide there are not many DTs that are "truly" elite. While they may not be as hard to project on the next level as a QB or OL, even Butch said, because of there scarcity, they were one of the hardest to recruit.

And yes I well aware of our history. Let me remind you that one of our HOFers came in as a TE Russell Maryland wasn't highly regarded. Cortez Kennedy was a JUCO transfer that fell through the cracks. Even in the 70's, while it was a different world, none of the DTs (Reuben Carter, Don Latimer, Eddie Edwards, Don Smith) were recruited by the big guys. In fact our first All American (Al Carapella) was a DT that also overlooked by the major powers. If anything, Miami made their name with DTs by superior talent evaluation and development.

If you really believe there are plenty of "elite" DTs out there nation wide, you are tossing the label too cheaply.

You sure abut Ruben Carter? Thought he was an elite HS prospect back in the early 70s out of Stranahan HS. The late Lester Williams, out of Carol City, was the #1 high school DT prospect in the nation. And, he lived up to that hype.

RJ was the number #71 DE coming out of high school and weighed in at 240. Norton was listed as an OG coming out of high school. Its always good to get highly rated DT's but you can also help yourself by finding big talented guys who can be taught to play.

RJ's recruitment two years ago was a lot like Dee Wiggins' this year. Every local knew that the kid was going to be special, but for some reason, his recruitment never picked up nationally.

If there is anyone in America who can find under-the-radar DT's, it's coach Kool. Trust.

preseason top 5 if this pans out (assuming we win the OB).

Maybe, but the AP media voters, and the coaches to a lesser degree, still have an egotistical BIAS towards anything to do with Hurricane football.:puzzled: dUh. So I'm speculating a No. 10- No. 7 preseason ranking by both polls. hUh.

Agreed.

All 3 are quality players. Redwine isn't exactly chopped liver. He can play. He's just not Taylor or Reed.

We'll have more DB depth this coming year. But Redwine will definitely be playing a lot.

The 3 weak links on the D that need to be replaced if we are to become dominant...

Redwine
McCloud
Young

What crack are you smoking by saying Young and Redwine...especially Young.

Redwine is a good player. he might not be blazing fast but he is in on a ton of plays making tackles. Young got beat at times last year but he will improve.

right. i mean it was noticeable when smith and carter were on the field the difference in athletic ability. that being said, redwine plays his heart out.

About the best news you could hope for with getting 2 of the 3 back. If I'm RJ I probably leave.

If that happens it will give Miami 9 returning starts, 8 returning backups and a sick defensive recruiting class coming in. This D could be scary good.

2018 Defensive Depth Chart

SS Jaquan Johnson SR

2nd Team
WDE Jonathan Garvin SO

NT Jon Ford SO
SDE DJ Johnson SO
WILL Darrion Owens RSR
MLB Mike Smith RSR
SAM Charles Perry SR
CB Trajan Bandy SO

FS Gilbert Frierson FR (EE, so he should be ready to contribute)
SS Gurvan Hall FR (EE, so he should be ready to contribute)

When you factor in the possibility of adding Tyson Campbell & Patrick Surtain to this CB rotation, this could be the deepest defense that Miami has had since the early 2000's.

Best looking 3-deep on paper that we've had in years - since the early 2000s. And that's the kind of depth we will need in order to hang with Clemson.

The success of the Defense will come down to the DTs. Will Norton stay 1 more year? Can Willis finally give us something on the field? Is Jon Ford ready to take that next step? Can Tyreic Martin give us something - anything?

I finally feel comfortable with the talent level and depth of the other positions though so props to Richt for the roster overhaul.

Come on. Be civil. That's not the Canes way of doing things.

At least wish the fellow Happy Holidays first. Then a F^ck You is completely acceptable.

I'll wait to celebrate until it actually happens. But it would be fantastic news to get 2 of the 3 back. Defense would likely be even better than this year. And if we get better QB play, which is very possible, the offense should be better also.

And maybe bang his wife just before the OB... for good luck.
