Lateral Power 5 coaching move

To be fair he created all this and left a dumpster fire. He knew it was time to run for the hills.
He’s Mack Brown, marginally better. He did sucker TAMU into a 10-year $75M deal.

Brown owes his ring to Vince Young, Jimbo owes his to Jamies Winston.

Not all P5 moves are lateral.

Franklin from Vanderbilt to Penn State, for a recent example. Vanderbilt is a lower-tier $EC team, but Franklin coached them into overachieving and moved up to a traditional power program in PSU. Same for Mullen moving from Mississippi State to Florida, although MSU was better than Vanderbilt.

Our Canes are in a strange position. The program is a traditional power, in name, but hasn’t been relevant for 15 years. The program is merely a brand. And unless the powers holding the purse strings ante up that brand will fade as well.

Taking the Canes HC job is not a move up to much of the P5. There are pieces in place to enable winning if the school wants to invest in big boy football, and has two months to make that decision.

Look at some recent hires for P5 jobs. People are not being honest with themselves. Are we that much better than these schools right now? The expectations of who will come here vs. the reality of the situation is not great

Arizona: Jedd Fisch (NE QB coach)
Arizona St: Herm Edwards (TV analyst)
Colorado: Karl Dorrell (Dolphins WRs)
Wazzu: Nick Rolovich (Hawaii HC)
Washington: Jimmy Lake (UW DC)
Baylor: Dave Aranda (LSU DC)
Texas: Steve Sarkisian (Bama OC)
Arkansas: Sam Pittman (UGa OL)
Auburn: Bryan Harsin (Boise)
South Carolina: Shane Beamer (OU TEs)
Tennessee: Josh Heupel (UCF)
Missouri: Eliah Drinkwitz (App St)
Michigan St: Mel Tucker (Colorado)

This is why I'm looking at the best unemployed guys / Co-ordinators who have taken a step backwards (like O'Brien) and the best G5 guys.

Went to the Dolphins in between - pretty sure the OP is talking about a coach leaving one power and going directly to another. And not b/c they were fired or we could include Mark Richt
Well Saban went from a good Michigan St team to LSU

It happens all the time, as you see from all the coaches listed in this thread. The thing is most aren't lateral moves. Going from Miss St to Florida is not a lateral move. MSU to LSU. Just because its p5 to p5 does not make it lateral. I am not the most well versed CFB expert on here, but the only time I can think of coaches doing true lateral moves, it was because they were going to their alma mater or a school they have a strong connection with.

Yeah, every P5 is not equal. Some P5 jobs r P5 in name only. ****, some G5 guys r better than P5 jobs. Spot on w/ ur post; Like a lateral move, imo, would be moving on from LSU to UGA or going from Vanderbilt to Duke. Going from, let’s say, Arizona to Clemson wouldn’t be a lateral move…that’s an upgrade.

Exactly. 100%. Agree with all your points. You even see some coaches get fired then hired by another P5. Like Richt from UGA to Miami. Obviously getting fired by UGA then going to Miami is not a lateral move.

Good question OP. What's the point? I'm thinking it's that we're likely going to get a P5 Coordinator as HC or a fast rising G5 HC who leaves to take a promotion....like buddy from Coastal Carolina or Gus or Freeze etc.
