Lane Kiffin is realistic (info).

So you are choosing to white-knight for some whiny porster? Your choice.

Look, you have no idea who I am or what I'm about. I do not even come close to "talking down to everyone on the board". I am friendly with many, many posters on the board, and have met many in person or via Zoom.

I also have a very low tolerance level for false or misleading or stereotyping or cliched or repetitive porsts. If you ever feel like you have been "talked down to", maybe you should re-evaluate your porst.

But, hey, for today, I'm going to play along with your misguided post. It's not only misguided because you have misjudged me personally, but it's also misguided because of your incorrect assertion that Lane is "clearly down on my list". In case my MANY posts on the subject are unclear, I'll make it very clear.

I don't have a list.

Lane isn't "up" or "down" on my list. I am well aware of what he has done throughout his entire career. He's an outstanding coach on the field. I am also very cognizant of how Lane has behaved (both publicly and privately) throughout his career, and I feel that nearly every Lane Train fanboy thinks that he should get a job offer based solely on his recent W-L performance, rather than the entirety of his role as a head coach and face of a football program.

Look, I speak very honestly, very frankly, very bluntly, and I'm not going to apologize for any of that. Some people appreciate that, and others get ****y about it and claim they are "talked down to". So here's the bottom line. It doesn't matter if I have Lane #1 or #101 on my non-existent list. As a UM alum, and based on what I have seen from our Board of Trustees over the past 35 years, I feel that if the BOT responds as they have always responded (and it is always possible that they will chart a new course and do something completely out of character), I find it highly unlikely that Lane Kiffin will get either an interview or an offer if there is a frank and open conversation regarding his public and not-so-public behavior. That is NOT my opinion of whether he should or should not receive an interview or offer, it is just an assessment of how I believe the nearly 100 millionaires or multi-millionaires on the BOT will respond if there is a debate on any factors beyond Lane Kiffin's current W-L record.

So, for the most part, all of this is moot. It really doesn't matter if 1,000 porsters jump on the Lane Train. It doesn't matter if there are 10,000 well-reasoned posts extolling all of Lane's coaching attributes. If you can't get the BOT to look the other way on all the red flags, then nothing else matters. And maybe it will happen. I just harbor serious doubts. It is great that Jose Mas is leading the charge for change right now, but I'm not sure there are 51 Trustees who will sign off on a "close your eyes and just focus on his current W-L record" hiring of a guy who would be the face of UM football.

Sorry. I've tried to hint. I have nothing against Lane personally. But the stories I've heard from people with strong connections to USC are very similar to the stories I've heard from people at FAU. The myth of Lane Kiffin, reformed bad boy, is not what it appears to be. He's a fine coach. Wins a lot. Calls great plays. No disputes there. And he certainly has some fans on the UM BOT for what he does on the field. Maybe those supporters can convince others. But with 35 years of being a UM student and alum, and having observed how the BOT operates...I just don't see it.

Sorry if you feel talked down to.
Appreciate the thought out response. Since it really doesn’t matter who we want, I am still curious of your top 3 or 4 for the job?

Kiffin just took on Jimbo and a more talented TAMU squad and won. If Manny Diaz had coached UM against TAMU, the Canes would have lost 135-0.
So did Sam Pittman and his Razorbacks. Is he a potential candidate, too? That dude took over a team that lost 20 consecutive conference games. If the point is Diaz sucks well we all know that.

His first full cycle was 2018, when he was not in the Top 10. And before protesting that he "just got hired as HC", he was on the staff for a full year prior to signing the 2018 class. Again, not taking anything away from him, it was a transition year, but let's not pretend that he first landed in Eugene a few weeks before National Signing Day.
This is from a post @DMoney had. Let’s take the focus off the national picture for a moment.

Are the recruiting rankings better for Mario than Miami?

Now bring it back to a national level - IMO, Mario can be top 6 many of the years. If you want to argue that, fine. I can change the statement to 6-10 in the rankings most of the years here at Miami.

Not saying he's had a HOF career yet, but he's done pretty well for a guy in his mid forties IMO:

*Turned a losing TENN team into a winning team that went to a bowl in one season.

*Modernized the Alabama offense and won the NC there as OC.

*Inherited an FAU program that went 3-9 (.250) in each of the three seasons that preceded him, improved them by 8 wins in year one, and won 11 games in a season twice in next three years.

*Inherited a losing 4-8 (.333) Ole Miss team and improved them to .500 and a bowl appearance while trying to install a new offense and defense while losing over half his practices to Covid.

*In year 2 has Ole Miss at 8-2 (.800) and alone in 2nd placed in the SEC West, and will be favored in their last two games to get to 10-2 in the hardest division in CFB. His only losses have been @Bama (#1) and @Auburn (#18). He beat Arkansas (#13) and TAMU (#11). Of course the Egg Bowl will mean a lot, but it won't define him win or lose.

Not bad I say. I think the jury is still out as to whether he can be an elite recruiter though, which while I think we'd be fortunate to land either, I prefer Mario. Note that Lane was recruiting coordinator while at USC when he was a very successful OC there.

I object to is this sort of attitude that’s running through this thread that if we get Lane it’s a slam dunk, we will be scoring 100 points a game, and contending for the playoffs in no time. There’s some definite negative issues regarding him. Do you know what one of them is? He can turn this into a shlt show in a sure fire hurry. Guys like him can crash and burn.

Do I object to him? Not in the sense that he is definitely better than anything we’ve had for years and years. But he’s high risk, with some reward, we just don’t know how high the ceiling is with him.

Also, why can’t he ever seem to find a good defensive coordinator.

This is whats going on. They been had backchannels with Mario for weeks as I and others previously said. Mario is all about coming home if they show commitment and Blake was gone. If he doesnt come, Lane is 110% looking to take the job. that wasnt a slip up on game day. There is no option #3 at this point.

Give me Mario, all day, every day. But if he doesn’t work out, I can live with Lane if he gets a serious DC.

Think Mario is a lifer.
Eh…I mean he was back in Coral Gables for about 2 minutes before Saban came calling. Plus, if we hire him away from Oregon, that doesn’t say “lifer” to me. I get that he’s an alumnus, but if he sees a better offer, I would expect him to take it.

This has always blown my mind considering who his dad is.

He was fighting with Nick Saban until the end at Alabama, in fact correct me if I’m wrong, he basically got kicked to the curb during the playoffs. Am I right?

The previous OC, Doug Nussmier (sp?), was kicked to the curb for Kiffin. Lane was brought in while Nuss was still the OC and basically took over for about a month before even being named OC. It was the writing on the wall for Nuss as he sought after the Michigan OC job, got it, and Kiffin slid into the OC role officially.

EVERYONE STOP.

If he leaves for a better job its GOOD... it guarantees that he was a good hire, crushed it here, and now we are going to have 10x the leverage in our next hire. It could be to go after a Lincoln Riley type at that point. It would be a GREAT THING. It would mean the hire WORKED OUT and SAVED UM FOOTBALL. That's how it works, and that's how it went with EVERY GOOD UM COACH WE'VE HAD since and including SCHNELLENBERGER.

Jesus we don't even know if we are getting a coach ANYWHERE near the Mario and Kiffin level and you triggered mofos are already sitting in the corner worrying about when they are going to leave us.
This right here ^^

When was the last time a coach left us in a good way?

You don’t remember the drama that Lane caused, and the consternation he gave Saban.

Let me get you people caught up since apparently nobody remembers all the drama Lane Kiffin caused in Alabama.

He did this during the playoffs and right before a national championship game.

I’m telling you guys, this guy brings a lot of drama.

I’m not saying don’t hire him, but some of you people jump in without understanding that you have to play devils advocate with candidates. There is no doubt there’s a lot of drama that follows this guy.

When he announced he was moving on to FAU Bama moved on too. He didn't coach the playoffs. Pretty sure if he hadn't quit he would have stayed on.
