How many times have we seen players with other worldly physical talent but have the football IQ of a gnat. He’s young and in a new system. Hopefully, the light comes on and he’ll live up to his potential.
That's fair. He may be thinking too much and half stepping, but you would like to see some football instincts come into play when playing safety and understanding formations and alignments. The play he has help inside so stay in your area and pick that play off.

Wonder why the staff didn't try Gil at safety yet... pretty sure speed won't be an issue with him and he was pretty sound at staying with his assignment at striker
It's a mystery but could he have gotten paid (NIL) and decided to check out? He isn't even allowed on the field for special teams.

I’m not one for excuse making, but I think many times the fact that an entirely new system was installed just a few months ago gets lost in the shuffle. Add in a multitude of factors including injuries and youth that could be leading to some of the coverage busts we’ve seen.

Its not just AW. Its the entire Safety room. They all gamble way too much. Kam gambles more than any of them. I like their knack for wanting to make a big play..I actually love it..but the difference between Ed Reed and all the other safeties whoever walked the earth is that Ed watched an ungodly amount of film to ensure he never made a mistake...He didnt gamble, he counted cards. (For my blackjack players)
Yep, I guarantee that Reed was watching film immediately after Penn State beat us on that long pass play with under two minutes to go back in 1999. Never saw him get beat like that again ever in college or in the NFL

Whoever teaching this should be fired.
Not a guru like some, but IMO...

I think it's muscle memory tbh. These kids are used to being the big dawg in a place where emphasis is not placed on fundamentals but flashy splash plays for years.

So they get to a level where you need more "know-how" and "want-to" and a lot of them disappoint. It's too late to teach a 19yo the proper way of tackling when they arrive on campus if he is going to be a contributor, that has to be ingrained already. For a lot of those kids, it is not. Hence the hesitation in tackles and the neck injuries we have waaaay too often at this program.

no one should be asking why Anantae isn’t playing more.

That was an extremely disappointing performance.

He is the face of what is wrong with this program right now. Highly rated recruits that come in and are either not coached correctly or are just a long way from being good.

Even the fumble he caused was a completion because he went the wrong way and didn’t cover his man.

again, football IQ(or lack thereof)

In theory, I agree with you.

In practice, the last 20 years has shown us that if you simply dont have the smarts and have previously gotten by on athletic ability, you wont be able to catch up in a P5 program.

Yea not sure where you were trying to go with this post. 98% of high school seniors aren't finished products when they enter college. I can assure you that the majority of freshmen and sometimes sophmore seasons are spent correcting bad habits learned throughout high school. That's a 5th yr senior attempting that tackle though sir.
I do agree someone like James Williams appears to still be relying on what worked in high school. Coaches are either coaching it or condoning it at this point. The only position that has been fundamentally sound has been the DL. Outside of broken contains here and there it's hard to pick out obvious bad teaching habits.

No doubt. We’ve seen many times that a player may be a tick slow but more than makes up for it with a high football IQ.

Move him to nickel corner. He’s a liability at safety in 2022. I think he can help at nickel
Yeah aside from the one play he made on that interception against GT, he hasn't demonstrated much ball-hawking ability at safety. His high school highlights were mostly him making solo tackles near the LOS. They seem to love Couch at nickel though but I agree he doesn't belong at safety based on what we've seen.

The ball skills when the ball is in the air is pathetic. Also anticipate too much and jump routes when the ball is not going there.
