Josh Pate Mail Bag 10/25

Nah it's not about enjoying watching the team lose, it's about feeling justified and vindicated after being dragged and negged on here (and other sites) for daring to be cautious regarding new hires and not immediately slurping the kool-aid and falling a victim to off-season hype. This was especially the case with Mario (and maybe Richt) where if you weren't constantly sunshine pumping and predicting an ACCCG appearance in year 1, your fandom/dedication to the team was questioned and you were told to "go root for UF or FSU." I was in a Canes fan group on fb and predicted anywhere between a 6-8 win season for Miami (no ACCCG appearance) and i even predicted that TVD would struggle a bit adjusting to a new offense/coordinator and had blind fanboys come at me. So while it sucks that the team is 3-4 and a current laughing stock (especially from Oregon fans), at least i can take slight comfort delighting in the misery of sunshine pumpers who lacked any real objectivity.

Well first of all, how dare he have a level-headed take.

Secondly, is he right or wrong? What’s your and others’ opinions?

This year has certainly been a massive failure on the field and can still get worse if recruits start to drop. However, I think (hope) we keep our recruits and overhaul the deficiencies in our roster via the portal and replace a lot of our coaches too.
It’s been beyond disappointing on the field

But I still think we are in a far better position long term. I may be in the minority but I really don’t see any of these recruits dropping out. Maybe one or two. This isn’t blind optimism but from what I’ve seen so far it’s definitely looking like one of our strongest classes. There are no reaches, projects, or WTF guys. Too often in the past it would be early in the cycle and we would have lots of those. Taking fliers to fill a class is one thing, but that’s not what I’ve seen in the past. Even the low ranked dudes look like they’re ready to compete early.

If Gattis and Steele aren’t the answer, I am confident we will make changes

The only question is, will Mario be willing to make a big pendulum swing if it’s necessary?

I appreciate that he’s not a panic mode kind of guy, but what’s happening right now is actually cause for some panic

End of the show he talks a lot about Miami. Worth a listen. I like his perspective a lot. He is hardcore, well connected, well informed and disinterested/impartial.

It's not even about being well-connected—it's about being a logic-driven human being, instead of an over-emotional twit.

The first thing he did when he saw the story blowing up? Went back to the source and watched the interview for context—instead of just jumping on the narrative that Mario "blamed" the South Florida media.

99% of the idiots who comment in knee-jerk fashion won't even do this; they just pile on—some even being so stupid as to take the time to tweet at a show host for a take on something before even doing their homework.

This is a simple, logical, common-sense take that ANY FAN could easily have, if they chose to not be overemotional with their assessment of the program—which is usually rooted in running their mouths to rival fans and friends about Miami being "back" and then being embarrassed when the Canes faceplant, again.

Best-case scenario, had the current roster bought-in to Mario's alpha, hard-***, hard working stylings—this team would be at worst, 5-2 right now and more-likely 6-1 with this schedule.

Instead, as the analogy goes—the house had termite damage, water damage and was more of a teardown than expected—which makes the rebuild more invasive than expected.

Even with this understanding, we have idiot fans screaming that Miami beat "the same Duke team", 47-10 last year and lost by 24 this year, therefore Diaz was a better coach that Cristobal.

That's the level of imbecile we're dealing with regarding most of the loudmouthed critics in this fan base.

Josh is 1000% spot-on—yet we'll still have morons who hear that six-minute spiel and respond with, "But yeah, bro, Mario still blamed the media for all those losses, bro."

I can't even with these yahoos.....

Go re-read what you posted and the number of insults and then answer for yourself why the board has the potential to turn into a **** show…

I agree with all that. But maybe you’re not seeing my point. We’re stuck with him at least 5-6 years. Why don’t we support the team unconditionally for a couple years so we can do our part to help momentum.

Go look at Nick Saban’s opening press conference where he asks for everyone’s unconditional support—because it takes everyone to succeed.

You have to assume Mario wants to win and wants to put the guys in positions to succeed. We already saw a change in the offense. We’re throwing it now more than ever.

The losses do matter. They’re evidence of the stupidity you reference. If we had zero losses, no one would be saying **** about “stupidity”.

@astabooty i agree with what you’re saying. But I don’t think you understand my point. See above. Check out my posting history. I’m ripping the staff just as much as the next guy. It’s embarrassing seeing what’s going on. And I’m at every game. To get the seats I have I also need to donate some decent coin.
Exactly what I been saying this team needs the fan base now more than ever, can't stand people who talk bad about the program and never do their part to show support to the team by going to the games, especially when live in the area

the fanbase will not show up for a loser. its been that way forever. its also what happens when youre in a pro sports city where the college team is treated like a pro team

I'm a Bills fan and before these past few years the team haven't been to playoffs for two decades and was still selling out majority of games, even other cities like Cleveland, New York, Dallas, New Orleans show out to support their favorite team, I think problem is not enough students and too many fair weather front runner type fans. Tickets can be from 10 to 50 bucks

Things like this anger me. It means we should band together as fans to support the program no matter what, regardless of whether you agree with everything. I liken it to families dealing with their own **** internally and never publicly airing their ****.

Like we shouldn’t be sheep being influenced by dirtbag journalists that just want to see **** burn. We should rebut all their bull**** tweets and comment on all their hit piece articles.

**** them. The program needs as much support as possible. We’re stuck with Mario for at least 5-6 years. Let’s support him at least for now, no questions asked.
I see your point and don’t hate it… but we’d basically be Nebraska of the south at that point. Bunch of fan support for a losing team with not a ton of hope. Just the way I see it

Do you think 8-9 wins was too high of a standard? I mean Vegas had us around that total. The media had Miami as a huge favorite to win the coastal , we easily have the second most talent in the conference . On top of that the schedule was pathetic , It’s Clemson and the rest is average to below average.

The culture is bad but was it so bad that it won 5 out of six last year and was a late meltdown from 6 out of 7?

imo the truth like always is in the middle. We have a culture problem and quitters. There’s also too much talent to be losing to horrible rosters and the coaching has been atrocious. If people want to deny that they’re living in a cult or have cognitive dissonance.

This staff is one of the highest paid in the country and this has been one of the worst ROI I’ve ever seen.

No, I’m the one who said all along we should win 8-9 games in yr 1. It’ll be foolish to think or say this yr hasn’t been disappointing w/ that expectation alone.

I never thought this was a 10 win or ACCCG roster. 8-9 wins? Yeah, absolutely it should be.

Ehhhh Miami isn’t buffalo as a sports city. Same w Cleveland who have really good fans esp for browns football. The issue is the fanbase and city isn’t a sports town. Just has a ton of pro teams bc of the market but it’s an event town

Hey @Liberty City El, @crossover22[]_[], @FrancisSawyer, @BS85, @UMFarArcher …remember when the slurp crew were blaming the players (because Pepperidge Farm remembers)?

Now the narrative has changed to it’s the media’s fault because they hate Miami. Apparently it’s also the fans fault for not showing up in mass to see this atrocity of a corching staff as they butcher anything and everything scheme and play call related.

I’m here for the laughs! You can’t make this up.
I'll take the blame...

It's my fault we suck.

I apologize to the rest of the fan base, I promise it won't happen again, you guysm just gotta give me some time.

Well yea up north large cities can be more loyal to a team because it's not a vacation spot, like Miami or Florida in general, I feel like there should be at least 40k to 50k diehard U fans that should still be able to show up and support no matter what

Lol we have a 30-35k hard core base. Always been that way. That’s a lot for a small private school in a city w very few alums. Also why? To slurp? No it’s everyone’s income. They can spend on how they choose and some don’t want to for a bad product.

The thing is, they weren’t sunshine pumpers. Lol.

The most “fans” that I witness say 10 win or bust, ACCCG or bust yr 1 weren’t objective, nor were they sunshine pumpers. They were fans who had their own agendas in either wanting Manny to remain here b/c “the guys played hard, so let‘a give him another year” or Lane Train fans. They never wanted Mario here; same ones were openly rooting against him while he was at UO. So for them, it’s vindication & I “told u so” high.

Most objective fans, would say this team would be an 8-9 win team, where we would see some growing pains. ****, even if u said 6-8 wins, that was still reasonable & objective.
You sure?

https://www.canesinsight.com/threads/do-not-try-to-tell-me-that-miami-is-a-rebuild.173628/

Because there were plenty of people who had high expectations & it wasn't just some Manny Diaz fans or Lane Train conspiracies; most of the people who set a high bar this Offseason were absolutely in the Sunshine Kool-Aid category & pretty all in on Mario.

In fact, I don't think anybody who actually wanted Lane predicted us to win more than 8 games this year, the logic being Mario ball would have quite a few growing pains throughout the season which would cost us some games.

Most people on the Lane Train actually would've expected 10 wins or bust out of Lane. I don't think anybody who predicted 10 wins this season did so out of an ulterior motive behind Mario, the majority of the fan base, at least like 90% spent most of the Offseason swearing to the High Heavens that Mario was Cubano Saban & we were going to win just off his Coaching style & added toughness alone.

A large part of the backlash has been the fact that the same people who spent all offseason deifying Mario are now making excuses on his behalf & the math simply ain't adding up...

I think Miami has an advantage over most schools when it comes to the portal. Honestly, we may be much better served acquiring the majority of talent that way than through high school kids. I just look at whose come through this school the past few years and, incredibly, all the players I remember being successful are via the portal. All the 5 stars we've signed have not worked out, for whatever reason. Look at this year, it's the same story.
