I'm shocked the internet genius' on this board were unable to make the connection between a current WR coaching candidate and Jon Richt.

He was an NFL assistant - not shocked that he's taking a coaching spot here.

For one year. I think it is fair to call this like it is, which is that it is at least a little nepotistic. Surely there were more qualified coaches among the hundreds who were texting him when he first got the job.

Anyways, I am actually ok with it because I like most of the rest of the staff and think we are on the right track. I just think it is ok to admit he is favoring his son and that it happens all the time not only in sports but in most organizational environments.

There may have been more qualified but how many wanted the job after Richt told them he'd be heavily involved with coaching of QBs? I doubt many well-established guys would want the job after learning Richt would be doing a lot of the coaching himself.

Same situation as what's going on at Baylor with Briles and his son.

Dabo recruited Richt to play at Clemson? Just kidding.

A coach putting his son on the staff is nothing new. Been going on for years and there is nothing wrong with it.

Let the man do his job the way he wants, if he fails then you have room to complain.

All-Time Individual and Team Records - Mars Hill University

Not saying he's a QB guru in the making or whatever, but he was a 3* QB recruit signed by Clemson out of HS. He was signed around the same time that Kyle Parker/Willy Korn were on campus, so he never got a sniff of the starting spot. Instead, he transferred to Mars Hill (NCAA D2 school just north of Asheville, NC), and set a bunch of school records (see link). I live a few hours north of Asheville, and the other small D2 schools Mars Hill plays in-conference with field pretty decent football programs (Lenior-Rhyne, Wingate, Tusculum, Carson-Newman, Catawba--recent champ of the South Atlantic Conference played in D2 playoffs this year).

So, even though he did it on the D2 level...he's played QB, and done so successfully. His transition into coaching between being at UGA before with his dad and then on to the NFL with the Bills, shows that some folks (albeit his pops included) believe he shows promise as a HC. So...if he's the QB Coach, and his dad is going to be supporting him in that role (remember, Richt said he wanted to call plays AND work with QB's again)...I'm OK with this RIGHT NOW, but I'll be keeping a close eye on the job that he's doing.

I just hope this doesn't end up being a Frank/Shane Beamer deal where you have to deal with a great coach father keeping an average coach son around, and is basically teflon, guaranteed not to be fired.

FWIW most in the profession consider Shane Beamer to be a very solid coach.

Tommy Bowden coming. Take it for what it's worth, since I haven't checked his twitter follows yet.

Not sure if this is a joke or not...
But you can't go from Beard...to a 61 year old Tommy Bowden as WR coach

I pretty much live in VT country. Their fans like him mostly because he's Beamer's son, but don't hold him up as this ace coach on their staff or anything. That's why I said "average".

I feel like most of these sons of established coaches had more than 2 GA years and an NFL internship under their belt when their dads hired them though.

Well JR scores well when it comes to certain intangibles...

Yeah, didn't he just get hired at UGA? TE/ST coach, I think.

We have to call it like it is, this is a very green staff. 3 first time college assistants in Richt, Banda, Rumph. Think Hartley has coached TEs 1 year and Brown has under 5 years experience.

A slurpers mentality:

Beard gets fired, "Yay we got rid of the inexperienced guys"
Jon Richt, Rumph, Banda, and Hartley get hired, "Yay we needed some young guys!"

Can't make it up. These folks are the most wishy washy bunch of fans I've ever seen. Gone soft just like the team.

Interesting how many here don't think a successful coach's son on the coaching staff is a waste, I mean it's not like he grew up in football right?
