Jimmy Johnson and Marvelous Marvin Hagler...

Ray stole rounds by flashing at the end of a lot of rounds. Ray was a brilliant tactician in the ring. He knew that was one of the only ways he was going to beat Hagler.
I thought Ray won a close fight but it wouldn't have surprised me if Hagler had gotten his hand raised. Another epic fight!
Ray was definitely a master tactician. He fought a very intelligent fight, and I agree that he finished rounds with flurries at the end in that fight. But to beat the champion (specially a champion like Hagler), you usually have to pummel him. Ray didn’t hurt him at all during this fight.

I was already in my late 80s when the Hagler-Leonard fights took place so maybe my memory isn't so good anymore. I always got the feeling Hagler got robber against Sugar Ray.

Right/wrong??

LOL, well that's a loaded question for me, given that Im a Hagler homer. It's like asking me who the greatest WR is/was in Miami history -- my answer will always be Michael Jerome Irvin. That will never change, bottom line

I thought he edged it. But I still wonder why he fought orthodox the first few rounds, and let SRL jump ahead on the cards

And Tyson actually knocked Douglass into la la land with that uppercut late in the fight. The ref never picked up the ringside count while Buster laid on the canvas for about 4 seconds. Douglass was down and out for more that 10 seconds but thems the breaks.
Great fight BTW. The crowd was sitting on their hands the whole fight. They had no idea what was really going down.
Please stop with the long count BS. Its obvious that Douglas took a knee to rest...he was even ****ed that he caught and pounded on the ring floor with his fist.....I like Mike Tyson but he has admitted plenty of times that he got his *** whipped.
Stop trying to make excuses for him....he got his *** whipped....big time...his words....
So let it go

I'm (surprisingly) not old enough to have appreciated Hagler live but he along with Joe Frazier are absolutely two of my favorite fighters of all time just based on watching old fights.

That's an awesome photo. I wouldn't hate watching a fight with Jimmy. He's probably not a horrible time.

This is a great share. I really appreciate you posting this. Marvin Hagler, my God what a boxer. Tommy Hearns also. Hitman Hearns. Just reminds me of my father, who was a huge boxing guy. Thanks.
Reminds me of my old man as well. He use to take me to watch fights via closed circuit all the time. Last one we went to was Tyson-Spinks at MDCC South. I went to get a hot dog before the fight started and by the time I came back it was over. After that he was like fvck this I'm not spending this kind of time and money for it to be over in a few minutes. Tyson ruined closed circuit . Shortly after that he got one of those big 12 foot satellites and started getting the fights on there.

Yeah that’s got hurt a little when you lay out the cash and you blink and the fight is over. But that’s when Tyson was absolutely rocking. At that time he looked 100% unbeatable ever. He actually ended up beating himself.

He really never fully recovered from Amato's passing...Cus swept him off outta Brooklyn straight to the Catskills to train, and to get away from Bedford Stuyvesant...

The Douglas Tyson fight is a fun rewatch. Sure, it was a one sided fight, but the sheer impossibility of what was unfolding was something to behold.

On a side note, the judges had Tyson ahead, if I remember correctly.
It was officially a draw at the time of the KO, which would’ve been the worst boxing robbery since Jones, Jr. got screwed in Seoul. Douglas won every round with the exception being the 8th when he got cute and careless with 15 seconds left. This is easily one of my favorite fights, sporting events of all time. It’s the ‘84 Orange Bowl, ‘80 USA Olympic hockey win of boxing to me.

Someone needs a Snickers.... Dude, everything on here doesn't have to be a debate. I was simply pointing out what I saw. Not making any excuses.
Tyson got his asss kicked all night long and Douglass fought a beautiful fight. It doesn’t change the fact that Tyson caught him with a hail Mary uppercut late in the fight and if the ref had done his job, it may have made a difference in the outcome of the fight. I was pulling for Buster that night and was happy he won. FWIW

Wasn't just geared towards you. And the ref did his job correctly...he has to make sure the fighter goes to the neutral corner..
All good

Ive often said it's the 'JFK assassination' fight. There's a belief that everyone in America knows exactly where they were and what they were doing when JFK was shot in Dallas. To me, this is the boxing version of it

This fight ended up in Japan because Tyson was mowing down guys so quickly and with ease that the Stateside casino's actually lost interest in Tyson fights, to a degree...

all this, also a referee, by rule, has to make sure the other fighter gets to a neutral corner during a knockdown.
Exactly. Douglas got knocked down. It happens. He was aware enough of the situation to wait out the count. He could have gotten up earlier, easily. Like you said, he pounded the mat in disgust knowing he messed up. A knocked out boxer doesn't go, "****, I screwed up." They go, "What a pretty glow... is that you, Jesus?"

That shot Tyson took would have knocked out **** near anyone. Douglas fought a nearly perfect fight, to beat a nearly unbeatable opponent. The amount of hard punches he landed was just crazy, and for Tyson to survive long enough to land his punch was a testament to how tough he was.

No kidding. Pay Per View was getting tired of it as well. I mean paying money to watch 91 seconds of a fight was getting old.

the joke was for a time that Johnny Gill's national anthems were longer than Tyson's fights

I remember the summer before my senior year in high school, I was bummed out because we had baseball game on the night Tyson faced Carl 'the Truth' Williams. The coaches knew I wanted to watch the fight, so did they.

So as we're warming up, one of them comes up to me, and goes, 'Steve, first round knockout for Tyson, you didn't miss much." LOL, we were both laughing because now we could at least pretend to concentrate on the game

People forget how popular Tyson really was back then. The guy had national endorsement deals with several major corporate entities. HIs fights on HBO literally did the highest ratings that network has ever done to this day
