Jake to the portal

Kid showed promise as a freshman under Lashlee. That’s why it’s so important to not only pick a place you want to live those next 3-4 years but it’s even more important to pick who is grooming you. Mario didn’t do his players or his team any favors with the hire of Gatis. His QBs all regressed.

For those that don’t know Mitch Mustain, he was one of the highest rated qb’s out of the 2006 recruiting classes. Won several awards his senior season and let his team to an undefeated season and class championship for the Springdale Bulldogs in Arkansas. That team was loaded, but he got all the praise.

He eventually signed with Arkansas (Razorbacks) and was put in as the starter after a few weeks into the season. He played horribly and was moved back to 2nd-3rd string. The Springdale mafia was up in arms and blamed the head coach (Houston Nutt) at the time.

Mustain transferred to USC after his freshman year, but remained buried on the depth chart for the rest of his eligibility.

The fact is, he just wasn’t that good. Was great in high school, but never really had the arm talent for the next level. Same with Garcia, as many posters pointed out during his recruitment and after he signed. He just doesn’t have the arm, or legs, to excel at the collegiate level. Now, Garcia seems to have a better work ethic and attitude than Mustain did, so time will tell if that will translate to anything of significance.

Gus Malzahn was the HC at Springdale and Nutt was forced to hire him as OC to get the Springdale boys. The other coaches couldn’t stand Gus and gave him the nickname “high school”. Nutt couldn’t stand Gus getting all the credit. That was the year they broke out the wild hog formation with Darren McFadden and Peyton Hillis. Mitch did get a raw deal at Arkansas once Gus and his offense left after the first year.
 
In all honesty I feel like our offense now would’ve fit Jake pretty well but it’s clear he’s not it. Maybe drop down and see if he can catch on somewhere

I was living in Northwest Arkansas at the time. You are correct with your information on Malzhan and the Razorbacks loaded running back stable. They also had Felix Jones.

Mustain may have got a raw deal. I don’t know what was told and promised to him when he committed to Arkansas. I know he was not good once the let him play. Anybody watching the game at Vandy, might as well have been me playing qb. That’s how bad he looked. Yes, Arkansas won that game, despite Mitch’s awful play.

Actually, playing “lights out“ in a spring game, especially that particular spring game, meant literally nothing. And I’m not an “I told you so“ guy, but we had about half this board saying he should be the starter because of a spring game that was basically meaningless in terms of gauging quarterback talent and suitability for an actual game.

Then I took hits saying Garcia was not good and he was running with 3rd team at Mizzou.

I didn’t see that, but I’m not surprised. I agree with you, I just don’t think the talent is there. It was enough in high school to make him a good high school player. In the end I just don’t think he has the athletic ability when it comes to set up and release, but I wish him the best as a person.

About processing and seeing the fielding. Saw nothing in the spring game and it certainly showed up oftened last year.
