Edward's was the 1st Huge local recruit brought in by Saban. OJ was much earlier in 1975 out of West Palm Bch (Forest Hills) recruited by Carl Selmer.

Nope.
Lou Saban did not coach Eddie Edwards. He played for Saban's predecessor Carl Selmer who was fired on Friday before game at Houston (he was at a WHA game that evening and learned of firing via PA announcement).

Melvin Bratton and Alonzo Highsmith were big gets for Schnellenger's '83 class but this class did not pale in comparison to the class Saban acquired in 1978. That was the class where UM beat out Alabama, Michigan, USC, Oklahoma and the Florida schools for what we would call 5 star recruits these days. For starters, Lester Williams (Carol City) who was the defensive National Player of Year (Art Schlicter was Player of Year on offense). Other prominent signees were Mark Cooper (Killian), David Jefferson (Hialeah-Miami Lakes), Fred Marion (Gainesville), Larry Brodsky (HML), Tony Chickillo (Southwest), Chris Duffy (broward), Chuck Hirschman (Jax), Mike Rodrique (Ft Walton Choctowatchee), Mark Richt (Boca Raton), Mark Rush (broward)...all of these were big-time recruits who could have signed anywhere in the country. Additionally, Saban nabbed highly- rated recruits from outside Florida like Jim Kelly, Tim Flanagan (Woodbridge, va), Bob Nelson (Baltimore, MD), Clem Barbarino (Pittsburgh), Andy Barratta (Philly), John Canei (WV)....that was a fruitful class which eventually form the core of a 1982 team which was as good as any team in the country. They beat a very good StatePenn team which were loaded with NFL talent and they were screwed out of their only two losses at Mississippi State and Texas. Very underrated team as good as many of the later Cane teams. So, yeah, Saban started it all, thanks to him and the local high schools he hired including Joe Brodsky ( HML), Jerry Anderson (Carol City) and Christ Vagotis (Killian).

Anyways, apologies for the long post. :)

Following up on the UM Defensive Linemen....As bad as UM was during the 1970s, we had some seriously talented DLmen...Eddie Edwards, Don Latimer, Jim Burt, Lester Williams, Ruben Carter, Mike Barnes, Don Smith, Bob Nelson, Tony Chickillo, Tony Cristiani and Gary Dunn. Tribute to DL coach Harold Allen.

Anyone got any good BBQ recommendations?

All facts here.

There were two phantom holding calls, one at Texas (SWC refs), one vs. MSU (SEC refs) which ... wow, coincidentally and shockingly, wiped off game winning scores by UM. The 'canes would have been undefeated with victories over multiple top 10 teams that year. And it wasn't 1982, it was 1981. By the way, people are still looking at the tape trying to find those holding calls.

Couple of interesting others tidbits:

Lester Williams on signing day was hidden by UM coaches in a motel room in north dade so the Oklahoma coaches sent to get his LOI in person couldn't find him. This was before faxes and the internet and public press conferences

Fred Marion was supposedly all gators, but Howard kept working him. What tipped it to UM is apparently Charlie Pell did something to insult Fred's family. Never got the full story.

Yes, Saban hired Vagotis and Brodsky. Adding in a couple of other guys, like marc trestman, Howard basically won the 1983 natty with coaches who had never coached college football before they got to UM

I'm close friends with Tony Fitzpatrick, and till this day he's mad af about the bad calls/Non calls in those games. I was at 5 games in 81....the upset of #1 Penn St was one of the most important in UM History. The 79 win in Happy Valley wasn't as big....they were only ranked #20 that game. The 81 Penn St and ND Wins are 2 of my favorites.

I stand corrected on my errant reference to 1982 team which was actually 1981. The 1982 season was actually disappointing alot of it due to Jim Kelly being injured and, later, Mark Richt being suspended for off-field stuff (yeah, you read it correctly. Lol), plus the other back-up Kyle Van Der Wende(?)....which resulted in true frosh Vinny Testerverde playing at Maryland and krapping the sheets...lol
Brodsky was the coach at HML during my 10th grade...Anderson later coached at UF and kind of became the gaturds' link to soFla recruiting ( and a very good one at that) and Vagotis had one of the finest seasons of any of UM's ol coaches coaching up a bunch of transfers, and a converted DE to win a national championship in '83.

Finally, I don't believe Charlie Pell was the uf HC when Fred Marion was being recruited. He was still at Clemson with Doug ****ey at uf.

It was Doug ****ey....

Yeah, that's a great story on Williams. I had several teammates recruited by UM and they told me about some "infamous" credit card that was available to certain recruits.
I also recalled one of my buddies telling me about Buster Rhymes, a hotly recruited RB from Northwestern HS. He had originally signed state letter of intent with UM but then ultimately signed with Oklahoma. After his signing he was driving a red Cadillac Eldorado, which matched the Sooners' colors. My boy swore he was given the car, Rhymes told media it was a car gifted to him by his uncle. I didn't think much of this until a few years ago I heard interview with OU coach Barry Switzer talking about his success recruiting soFla when he mentioned he had a "friend" in soFla who did a little recruiting for OU and who sold Cadillacs...lol
