Gaby says we're very interested and Davis is interested as well. He made 21 starts for Oklahoma including 9 last season. He started the last 3 season openers for Oklahoma but ended up being benched twice.

Jaden Davis was really good as a freshman for Oklahoma but has been up and down ever since, it's not easy to play CB in the big 12. Davis is a versatile DB and those type of players thrive in Guidry system. I think Davis would start at nickel if we take him. We do still need a boundary CB though.

Would rather get a boundary cb and let DP start at nickel if thats the case. ..I just need someone getting Couch out of that spot or eating some of his reps.

They aint evaluating right in that portal.

Dude likely wont be able to beat out Porter or Couch...he would be wayyy down my list.
Agreed. I wonder if this is more Guidry and less Mario...got no choice but to trust him, but personally would pass.

Facts.

I've said it before: That portal specialist we hired from Michigan State is collecting checks off of Kenneth Walker's success.
The crazy part is MSU just offered EVERYONE that went into the portal. They werent unearthing anything.

They could give me his job n i could do better lol.

They are hit or miss int he portal for everyone they pick as a contributor its 2 wtf jags right back.

His lack of production over 4 years at Okla is concerning.

Billy Bowman as a Sophomore basically took his spot.

Between DP Jr, Couch, Terry Roberts & Stafford coming in, I’m not sure what Davis adds to the secondary at Nickel that he would be worth the take. He’s not that much of a significant improvement & considering there are better players at that same spot who are in the Portal & still entering the Portal it’s a bit of an interesting assessment on their part.

The staff certainly knows better than I do, but bringing in a mildly productive underperformer would be a weird take, especially considering he’s only a 1-year rental. But hey, we’ll see.

Maybe they think our new scheme will improve his play? Davis is a weird eval, I remember watching him in 2019 and thinking **** we missed out on all conference type DB but ever since then his play has been very up and down. The one positive I do like is he's a fighter and always seemed to earn his starting spot back at Oklahoma. He got benched in 2021 and then busted his *** to become the starter for 2022.

I wonder if this a bodies/low hanging fruit situation. We need depth in the worst way. Local guy probably won’t take a ton of resources to land him. Hopefully he’s not the only answer but if we add 3-4 DBs bringing in a guy with P5 experience makes sense.
Very well could be. I know people have dreams of landing any big name that enters the portal but the days of getting D'Eriq King or Jaelan Phillips(although Phillips was a sit one year transfer) are gone. We aint ahead in the transfer game anymore.

Rambo was even an Oklahoma cast off that just happened to pay off big. I think that is the pool we're swimming in now.

Don't think this moves the needle. My educated guess is that they are disappointed in Terry Roberts at CB and want to add depth at that spot. This is an easy add that doesn't clutter future numbers.

They will continue to pursue corners.

The secondary is a few injuries away from walk ons playing. We need warm bodies and if a P5 cast off is what we can get, I’d go for it.

Nick Kelly played most of the spring game (and actually had a nice tackle on Riley Williams). DB is where we need some numbers.

Is Roberts one and done?

Davis just seems more of the same. Average CB who doesn't elevate the room. I'd rather take my lumps with the young Brown, Graves, etc. than Davis.

There's one important thing to note, and I say this as someone who is not moved by this offer: we have plenty of room.

If they think there is an upgrade available at any spot on the depth chart, and they would not be blocking any promising young players, they will consider the move. This strikes me as adding competition for Couch and co. with minimal downside.
