Really surprised I missed this response. So let me 1st say this is no offense to u, but I think u need to understand two elements here:
1. I’m not an avg. poster on this board. I’ve had more youngins than a little bit play D-1 ball including one, currently, who is now at UNC; so I’m more than familiar w how recruiting works.
2. Know when I post dogmatically, I’m not posting just random b.s. Anything Nike, Oregon, or USC related & there’s a high probability I know more than I let on, & those in my PM know, know.
So let’s 1st discuss recruiting in general:
It used to b mostly about relationships, but now we know NIL is a huge component. However, since 2022 wasn’t the wild, wild West as we know it to be today, let’s focus on the relationship aspect of recruiting, as that’s most applicable during this timeframe:
-Just b/c Coach A develops a relationship w/ Recruit A while he’s employed at School A doesn’t mean Recruit A will commit. We know this b/c if this was the case, every coach would be batting 1.000 in recruiting.
-W/ that said, y is it advantageous to go by “commit date?” B/c if Coach A couldn’t seal the deal for Recruits A, B, C etc. w/in a full recruiting cycle, including ESD, but their predecessor (Coach B) comes in to seal the deal, that Coach deserves that credit. It’s no different than if Coach A takes a new job at School B, & now Recruits A, B, C, etc. follows him. It means his relationship was so strong w the recruit & their team, they followed him.
-On the other hand, It’s a whole different story if that same Coach A gets Recruits A,B, C etc. to commit to School A, but after moving on to School B, all his predecessor has to do is maintain status quo.
Now that we got that out the way, here’s the fallacy in trying to give credit to Mario for the following recruits Lanning secured:
1. Connerly: Never OV’d to Oregon w/ Mario; BUT, he did OV to Miami when Mario became HC. He OV’d to Miami, USC, & UO w/ Lanning. The battle at the end was Miami & USC, w USC getting the CB; yet, Lanning snatched him! So how do u not give him credit for this when Mario had his first OV?
2. James: Was actually committed to UGA, & didn’t receive an offer to UO until AFTER Lanning was hired. Lanning flipped him, so how do u not give Lanning credit for this?
3. Luli: Committed to Mario at UO, then de-committed after Mario left. He OV’d to Miami w/ Mario, yet Lanning got him to re-commit. So how do u not give Lanning credit for this?
4. Florence: Another guy who committed to Mario at UO. He de-commits after Mario leaves. He OV’s to Miami w/ Mario, yet once again, Lanning got him to re-commit. Again, how do u not give Lanning credit for this?
5. Terrell: Didn’t even receive an offer from UO until AFTER Lanning was hired; how does he not get credit for this?
6. Kasper: Offered by Mario twice, once at Oregon, & again at Miami. Kasper didn’t sign at ESD or NSD, but the competition was actually UTenn; yet, it was Lanning who pulled him. So how did this kid pass on Mario twice & choose Lanning? Better yet, how is Lanning not credited for this?
7. Lowe: Lowe was a Utah commit. Lanning worked to flip him AFTER ESD, and sealed his commitment on NSD. So how is he not credited for this?
8. Rogers: Wasn’t even on Mario’s radar; was offered AFTER Lanning took the job & secured his commitment ASAP. Again, how is this not credited to Lanning, again?
9. Dunne: P from Australia. Offered a scholly AFTER Lanning was hired. How is this not credited to him?
10. Winston: Committed to Mario in 2020, de-committed after Mario left for Miami. He was a UF v. UW battle down the home stretch, & Lanning got him to OV to re-secure his commitment. How is Lanning not credited for this?
So let’s recap:
Out of the 55% that comprised UO’s class of ‘22
-4 of the 10 didn’t receive an offer from Mario
-3 were de-commits
-2 were de-commits that OV’d to Miami & still re-committed
-2 were flips from other programs
-2 were offered twice by Mario, & chose Lanning after NSD
I repeat:
1. These unsubstantiated narratives have to stop
2. The difference makers from the Class of ‘22 is all Lanning EXCEPT Devon Jackson who committed to Mario & remained a Duck.
To put a bow on this:
•All of Mario’s recruits that committed & remained were all shipped out except for Jackson, & they’re all buns bouncing from program to program or have gotten stuck in the portal.
