ITT We Follow Potential 2015 Coaching Candidate Week 4

this is one of the best threads we got on the board so let's keep it rolling with our first loss. One of my biggest wants out of our new HC is to bring us into current college football landscape. Teams win with offense. Justin Fuente (Memphis) and Tom Herman (Houston) are two of my top choices. Some numbers

Memphis:

8th in YPG - 570
10th in YPP - 7
14th in plays per game - 82
3rd in scoring per game - 53.8

Houston

6th in YPG - 590
11th in YPP - 7
7th in plays per game - 86
6th in scoring per game - 48.3

Around 62% of both team's plays are runs.
 
Herman's experience at Ohio State as their QB coach and co-OC from 2012-2014, combined with how much worse their QBs and offense as a whole have looked without him against very weak opposition, makes him the top candidate in my eyes. Herman is a savage who sets high expectations and molds his offense around his personnel.

Houston has a very talented dual-threat QB in junior Greg Ward. Look at how he's done through three games compared to last season, noting that his 2015 numbers are about 1/3rd of the sample size compared to the previous season when he took over as their starter in October.

Before Herman arrived, sophomore season (9 starts): 177-of-263, 2010 yards, 67.3% completions, 7.64 YPA, 12 TD, 7 INT, 141.2 rating
With Herman as his coach, junior season (3 starts): 61-of-81, 785 yards, 75.3% completions, 9.69 YPA, 8 TD, 1 INT, 186.8 rating

Herman has proven he can develop talented QBs during his time at Ohio State, and he's immediately paying dividends at Houston as well. Great offensive mind from Urban's coaching tree who will bring an exciting, productive, dynamic up-tempo spread (Houston ranks 7th in plays per game thus far in 2015) that appeals to premier skill talent.

any of the above would be great and would get us away from the archaic offense we've been stuck in. I'm in full agreement that we need an offensive minded coach that will get us into the 21st century

Fuente better be on the schools radar. There are no smoke and mirrors with his success. He took a terrible Memphis program and is kicking ***. Can't ask for much more than that.

Fuente's done a really impressive job at Memphis. No question. My biggest reservations with him -- aside from seeing him talk about pillars like Golden in an interview -- are two-fold. He's never coached at a history-rich program with annually high expectations where he has to compete against the big boys every week, and he's a complete unknown as a recruiter.

I've been adamant about needing a head coach, not a head recruiter. The "he has South Florida ties" talk with Cristobal and others drives me crazy. But, on the other end of that spectrum, hiring a coach who's a complete unknown as a recruiter at a major program is a concern, IMO. More importantly, he's never coached in the Power 5. TCU joined the Big 12 a year after Fuente left to coach Memphis.

I've favored Herman over Fuente in part because of his stellar performance at Ohio State, where he developed talent tremendously and landed multiple big time dual-threat QB recruits (was the primary for both J.T. Barrett and Torrance Gibson). Herman was one of the top playcallers in the country against Power 5 opponents during that stint and was dominant. His coaching acumen against strong opposition was on full display.

Fuente won his 12th straight game. Just a reminder that he won 12 straight at Memphis. He has a bye week then Ole Miss.
