For the past 50 years there are very clear elements that win football games.
-The ability to run the football and possess the football
-the ability to stop the run
When you run a system that places no value on time of possession, and requires you to be ahead all game, it's very hard to win anything of substance.
Offense and defense work in tandem. If your defense cannot get off the field, it effects your offense. If your offense cannot possess the football, it effects your defense.
What I can;t stand about the Oregon offense, and the Sumlin/Holgerson/Leach offenses is that while they are unstoppable against most teams, they predictably wilt against above averages defenses, and then they have no means of coming back in games.
Oregon had a few dropped passes, and bc of that couldn't get out front. Which meant they couldn't run tempo. Which meant they punted more than usual. This then put a garbage 3-4 bend don't break D in an even worse position. Their entire D system is predicated on giving up a billion yards and hoping for the other team to make a mistake, and then having their offense capitalize on that.
Well when your offense is ever so slightly off, the entire thing crumbles. Oregon can't win close, non-blowout games.
