It's Official: California to let college athletes make money, defying NCAA

Players would need to hire agents
There is no way that a player would be able to handle inquiries, contacts, negotiations, etc. This would be an area where NFL agents get involved in hopes of building a relationship. You would likely see big prospects hire agents coming out of high school to help with college selection.
This could be huge for big market teams like Miami and USC, no? Aren't some of the biggest agents in the NFL from Miami?

Agents go where the money is..they may be in Miami now but you can bet they will be opening up satellite offices in places like Austin,Ann Arbor,Tuscaloosa and all cities SEC...

Because that 100k won't seem like that much when you are getting 500k for an advertisement. If it is a close decision between Miami and Georgia, and Miami will make you 500k and Georgia 600k it is more likely that you will be fine with the 500k because of all the additional benefits of playing in the city of Miami. Plus it is far easier to secure multiple advertisements (if you are good, big IF) in Miami than any other big school outside of USC.

But the kids will not be making 500K when they are offered. You are projecting what they may make vs being handed cash.

I think you are over valuing the city of Miami. No one is going to try and build something around a poor program regardless of the location.

To add, agents will build relationships with businesses and boosters.

Did you read what actually passed?
Yes, they can sign with corporate or individuals to make money off there name.
But don’t act like this will not evolve into kids scholarships being looped into this. As well as any other “perks”
The semi pro kids will be treated as assets more then they already are. They will also become very expandable.
They got paid and took the risk. Some slimness like we have never seen will come from these “handlers”

The governor of Californica is a dope.
He should worry about the homeless people, the return of epidemic diseases to the general population, human ***** and needles on sidewalks and so on.
College football is an afterthought in California, it is religion in the south.
That is where the money is and will remain.

The reason and ONLY reason the state got involved was for the tax revenue. Period.

Eleven pages and almost nothing of substance was written. So what does this mean for college sports?

We would have multiple entities that would need to come together before the player could use the team name, jersey, or even the word NCAA in endorsements/advertisements. In other words, a player could as a person endorse whatever but not could wear his own jersey, mention his team, or even the word NCAA. This is why most advertisements with NFL players they refer to themselves as "pro football players".
  • NCAAPA
  • NCAA
  • Conference
  • School

NCAAPA (NCAA Players Association)
The players will need to unionize so that matters of revenue sharing can be easily resolved. EA will not negotiate with every player they plan to put into an NCAA video game, instead negotiations will be had with representatives of the NCAAPA and NCAA. Players would need to pay union dues to pay for the NCAAPA staff.

Players could also sell gear that the schools give to them or buy
I doubt this would be a big issue but a player could not "steal" from the school to sell gear. In other words, Robert Knowles can't go grab 100 jerseys and try and sell them.

The player can endorse whatever but the school and NCAA will have a say
I know many of you think that Kosi is going to be performing in a BangBros episode rocking a UM jersey, but that **** isn't going to happen. Kosi doesn't own the brand and this goes for anything else.

There is not much of an endorsement market for most players
Players wearing full pads and helmets don't translate well to no team logo and a generic logo. Living in Atlanta I only see a few Falcons players on TV. In other words, no one is paying Navoughn Donaldson to endorse their ice cream parlor. Well known players like the QB, RB, and top WR might get some love.

The money is in autographs and speaking fees
Signing items purchased from CanesWear would obviously help the player but again it depends on the player and how bad fans want their autograph. Jalen Hurts would hold much more value in Norman then any QB we have ever had at UM. Speaking fees are a quick and clean way to pay a player. Tell a recruit that they get $100,000 their first week on campus for speaking to big donors and signing memorable.

Let's rehash and talk about how this flows
  1. Player completes the senior year of high school and signs with an agent
  2. Agent helps player evaluate schools to determine which school would bring in this most income
  3. Player commits to the school of choice
  4. Agent begins working on revenue streams
    1. This is important because there is a lot of hype around signees and value could go down if the player gets to camp is dissapoints
  5. Player enrolls in school
  6. Agent helps the player navigate school, practice, and business
  7. Player does events and gets paid
  8. Player votes a team representative to the NCAAPA
  9. Union representatives vote on a contract with NCAA, and Conference

See this image of Saban below, notice he isn't wearing BAMA gear and he doesn't mention the team. This is the type of advertisements players would be doing.

So, why is your speculation superior to everyone else’s speculation?

This will get ugly at the High School level. Just like it did when kids could jump straight to the NBA out of High School. But we will have to adapt.

I will be interested in where this will all be restricted. Will kids get to have advertisements on the Jumbotron in the stadium where they are playing? Will they get to wear their school gear in tv ads with out having to pay the school also? Will a college golfer get to hold a golf camp on campus? Lots of moving parts. What if a kid goes to Miami but signs a Nike endorsement deal? We will see these kids go OBJ and trying to wear every glove, socks, watches associated with other brands.

Without a contract signed from the school, the athlete would not be able to any copyrighted objects. Former NFL players can not appear in commercials with the HOF jacket without an agreement from the NFL. The NCAA could prevent teams from giving those rights to their players.

Miami will have to compete using local advertising, Adidas money, and deep-pocketed sponsors.

This will kill the NFL. A high school kid will be able to go and make bank playing for Clemson or Oregon for four or five years and set Mom right up. You watch.

Miami will be dead in the water......too many professional athletes in the area for the businesses to care about kids on a middle of the road college football team. The players at Miami will be very few and far between who actually see any noteworthy money.

Agreed. People won't spend money to actually go to games. No way there is going to be enough money coming in to actually pay out something meaningful.

Free agency would open, who’s to say a booster say if you redshirt this year and transfer to my school I’ll offer you whatever? I’m all for the players getting their money but it’s got to be uniform decision. You will be fighting every year to keep kids on your roster and that just may be enough to break some of these super powers like bama

California has always been a first mover to reform in just about every industry
CA is the most screwed up state in the country run by a bunch a cray F liberals. 150 thousand homeless in the state that has the 6th biggest economy in the entire world. They value illegals more than our own citizens. I don't have a problem paying kids though.

If this goes into effect...... THE STATE OF FLORIDA will benefit the most !

There is no personal income tax in Florida.
Florida State Tax LAW: Florida does not have a state income tax.

Mostly the University Of Miami- High Marketing, Beautiful weather, Well known football school, Best training and facilities in the summer, Culture and I hate to say it ....The Women!

All will play a major factor for recruits and the parents. (Beside the women lol)

(This is a Game changer) have to wait and see...

Go Canes!
You'll get over the woman BS when your brain takes over. You're ***** is guiding you now good luck with that.

Miami fans are celebrating this new law in Cali without realizing they are celebrating the death of Miami.....at least a future competitive Miami...current big programs are already finding ways to exploit this for their continued success...you think recruiting is bad now? Just wait a few years and see what this does to recruiting at Miami.
