Is anyone curious why SMU.....

Because they will get an SMU team 8 wins and a bowl game against teams like Prairie View, Rice,North Texas, Charlotte, Tulsa, Temple, East Carolina, and Memphis.

But I was told that talent wasn’t good enough to beat MTSU on here like 3 days ago
Our fan base is full of homers.

SMU would have demolished Mario’s squad this past season if we would’ve played them. They most likely would have put up 50 points on our dudes, and I’m being kind by saying only 50.

It’s funny how some posters deal with reality by claiming that “Lashlee’s offense is easier to learn, and there’s less thinking involved.” Well, no ****, that’s what good coaches do. They put their players in the best position to win by using their talents accordingly and scheming to their strengths.

Was this past season’s squad the most talented that we’ve ever trotted out on game day? Of course not. But were they so lacking in talent that teams such as MTSU, Duke, FSU and Pitt all boat raced us at home?

These same kids played way better the year before under Lashlee’s tutelage. It’s a very fair question, even though most of this board’s Orange & Green glasses will keep most from being objective.

Mario needs to adapt to modern college football, or he will not succeed here. It’ll be an extra tough hill to climb now. Thanks to the historically bad offense that he and Gattis trotted out there, elite receivers are avoiding our program like the plague.

He needs to:

1. Hire a forward thinking, innovative and aggressive OC that runs a scheme that can score points in bunches, not the same 3 yards and a cloud of dust caveman system that he prefers. Also let the new OC bring in his own coaches, at least at several key positions (QB, WR, RB).

He fails to understand that a team can run the ball effectively and still have a wide open offense. UGA, Baga, Taint, USC, and even the same Holes team that we all though would suck are evidence of this. Even Michigan passed the ball way better this past season and had lots of explosive plays.

2. Get the heck out the way, and let the new OC be in full control of the offense, without any of his input. He is NOT an X’s and O’s guy, and never has been. His job is to sell the dream to recruits, and to motivate them to be their best once they are on campus.

3. Transform the OL into a monster unit. With the talent coming in at that position (Cohen, Samson, Francis, Kinsler), and dudes like Rivers and hopefully Zion returning, he has no excuses now.

4. Improve greatly on game days as a coach. Too many time outs wasted, along with terrible time management and little to no sense of urgency, even when down big in second halves of games this past season. Lots of room for him to improve in this area.

5. Have less excuses. The amount of resources that are being allocated to him is like nothing that has ever previously been seen in Coral Gables. Bottom line is the results.

6. Figure out why so many of his best players got injured last season (as well as his last 2 seasons at Oregon), and change whatever he needs to make sure that the chances of it happening again are greatly reduced.

7. Continue to recruit like his hair is on fire, while showing recruits great improvement on the field. This will be key in him being able to finally land us some of the stud WR’s that he’ll need to compete for championships.

If he does all of these things (no easy task for an alpha like Mario that is set in his ways), he will succeed.

Yet with Lashlee we still got bodied

I really respect all the thought you out into your post. Some great arguments there. But Mario will never be a play caller, so his #1, #2 and #3 priorities for offense should be to find the best OC and clear the way for that guy to run his operation. IMHO.

is snatching up so many of our "rejects"? Brinson, Knighton, Miller, Keyshawn Smith, Roberts??/ Maybe Lashlee knows something especially about the WR's. I wish Lashlee could be our OC again!
Nope not curious

and don’t care about losing any of them with the exception of Miller

At least with Lashlee we were scoring lots of points on the teams that we were more talented than. Lashlee was smart enough to listen to TVD and pattern the offense around his strengths.

With Mario and Gattis, we were getting bodied by the Sisters of the Poor.

Not saying that our talent this past season was all-world, but the abomination that we were subjected to had a lot more to do with than just a lack of elite talent.

Couldn’t agree more. He needs to hire a great OC and get out the way.

SMU MusCanes

SMU Depth Chart

If correct, kinda funny how the majority these guys were dissatisfied not starting here just to go to SMU and essentially be in the same place on their depth chart.

Grass isn’t always greener.
Is this depth chart up to date? Still has Oak Leaf legend (and former Shaq Quarterman high school teammate) nick roberts at safety even though I’m pretty sure he’s 31 years old

it’s spring and there is a lot of adjusting. There also may be a lot of politics.
Imo it’s extremely difficult to bring in a bunch of dudes from one team and not have it affect the locker room if you start them all.

He’s on the Cam McCormick plan

Great for D’Eriq hope he does well and continues excel in that role.

On another note… we had guys (who had meaningful reps with us) who took issue with their role, felt they weren’t getting a fair shake. Only to transfer to SMU and still not be starters? Says a lot about our evals.

Please, go sit down!
